Volume 10 Issue 3 Promoting DX and DXing throughout Arkansas September 2002 ADXA OFFICERS Dennis Schaefer W5RZ PRESIDENT Dave Jacques K5DV VICE PRESIDENT E. GLENN WOLF Jr. N5RN SECRETARY/TREASURER N5RN. The report was accepted as presented. OLD BUSINESS: N5ZM give a report on HamCom DX- Travaganza sponsored by LSDXA. ADXA was well represented and it was a very good show. Tom Christian and daughter were very gracious. ADXA MEETING MINUTES T he 2nd quarter meeting of ADXA was held at Washburn Park in Russellville, Arkansas. The meeting was called to order by President Dennis Schaefer. Those that signed the sign in sheet were: Dave Jacques K5DV, Glenn Wolf, N5RN, Earl Smith, N5ZM, Rick Harris, AI5P, Dennis Schafer, W5RZ, Charles Tillotson, W5NX, Jimmy Ballew, N5ZIV, Stewart Long, KE5PO, Frank R. Kollatt, W5PBT, Leonard Mendel, K5OVC, Ollie Gade, W5GO, Skip Kendel, WA5KQU, Paul Wynne, AF5M, and Myrtle Wynne, N500I. Guests included Nick Kennedy, WA5DBU, Chuck Korzendorfer, KM5G, Madge Kollatt, KA5RSH, Janet Kendel, KD5RKY, John Evans, WB5BHS, and Sharon Smith. Dennis welcomed everyone and recognized Chuck Korzendorfer, KM5G, Charles Tillotson, W5NX, and Nick Kennedy, WA5DBU. A motion was made by K5DV that we dispense with the reading of the minutes. The motion was seconded by N5ZM. The minutes are accepted as printed in the Volume 10 Issue 2. The Treasurer s report was given by Glenn, NEW BUSINESS: N5ZM made a motion that we support both the NCDXF and INDEXA with a $100 annual to each organization. KE5PO seconded and the motion passed. It was reported that Bill Priakos would be moving to Fort Smith around 1 July. Stewart, KE5PO, has some pictures of Dallas HamCom that he passed around. N5ZM modeled a shirt that was going for about $35 each. Talk to Earl for details and to purchase. Rick Harris noted K5UR s picture on cover of CQ. Many had their CQ magazine in hand wanting his autograph, but we will have to wait as Rick was unable to make the meeting. K5UR is #3 in the DX Challenge. Skip, WA5KQU, indicated that there was a bill in the house on CC&R that has similar rules as PRB-1. It is in the telecommunications Committee. The Arkansas section web page has details. The 9/11 attack and how Hams reacted has helped a lot with

Page 2 this legislation. Remember PRB-1 doesn t prevent construction but restricts it to reasonable accommodation. Annual meeting will be either abe at a Chinese or Mexican restaurant. K5DV made the motion for Mexican (Acapulco) and the motion carried. The Hat was passed. The meeting adjourned at 13:30. Those interested made a trip to the Big Arkansas Tower north of Dover. For those who didn t make the trip it was quite an experience and a bargain that these guy landed. MARK YOUR CALENDARS These are the dates for future ADXA meetings. Please note the years as well as the date! September 3 rd Saturday (21 Sep 2002) - #2 Pavillion at Crystal Springs December 1st Saturday (7 Dec 2002) - Hot Springs March 3rd Saturday (15 March 2003) - June 3rd Saturday (21 June 2003) FROM THE PRESIDENT DENNIS SCHAEFER, W5RZ Maybe I'll get on the Honor Roll someday after all. The last ADXA meeting was good luck - I went home after the meeting and worked P5/4L4FN that afternoon. Now XY3C is in the log for a new one. The XY required lots of listening. Most of the spots came from Europe and JA and I never heard The ADXA Quarterly him here at all for the first few days. Then he was on 20 with a zillion JA's calling him until I had to give up and go to work. However, the next day, he was on 20 CW, coming over the long path, and calling for NA. I squeaked out the contact, but as much as I like QRP, I was wishing my 800 watts was 1500! Thanks to KE5PO and N5ZM for info on his operating habits. Everyone seemed to enjoy the Russellville picnic meeting in June. The great weather didn't even cost anything extra. Several got to tour the Big Tower and the tower owners enjoyed showing it off. The C-3 antenna is now vertically polarized due to high winds, but we hope to have that fixed soon. Several ADXA members attended the DX-Travaganza at Ham-Com in Dallas. Pictures are on the ADXA web site courtesy of Stewart Long. Tom Christian, VP6TC did an excellent program on the Ducie Island expedition and on life on Pitcairn Island. Tom is a real gentleman and very entertaining. Bill Priakos and crew are to be congratulated for a job well done. Hope to see everyone at the September meeting. The Hot Springs guys are always good hosts and the weather should be great. Come and bring a friend. 73, Dennis W5RZ

The ADXA Quarterly Page 3 NEXT MEETING The next meeting of ADXA is at Pavillon #2 at Crystal Springs. Directions: Travel to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Get onto Highway 270 (Albert Pike) headed west from Hot Springs. Watch for the Crystal Springs road. Make a right on Crystal Springs road (north) follow road almost to the end. ADXA banner should be visible from road. H O N O R R O L L Another ADXA member has just qualified for Honor Roll by receiving her Ducie card. Libby, WB6AXD, received her Ducie card on Friday, September 6, 2002 in Hot Springs, AR. Libby has been active in Ham Radio for about 30 years and became active in DX about 7 years ago. She achieved her most sought after DXCC award, Honor Roll, with this card. She has had the experience, guidance and help of her OM and many phone calls from ham friends Lenny, K5OVC, and Ollie, W5GO. While Honor Roll was her first basic objective, she is already talking about 5 Band DXCC, 7 Band DXCC, and should the ARRL ever come up with an YL Award, she will definitely be in the running. From this ADXA member; a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Libby for achieving this goal in Amateur Radio. Dave Jacques, K5DV Email k5dv@arrl.net Card Checking As is typical, Earl, N5ZM, will be available for card checking. He would appreciate a note indicating the fact that you will have cards to check. Drop him at note at n5zm@arrl.net.
