CALIFORNIA COASTERS A Chapter of FMCA JANUARY 1, 2019 Coaster Chatter Paso Robles December 2018 Officers President Leroy Davis VP Kerry Ray Treasurer Dale Johnson Secretary Pam Meyer National Dir George Brodt Alt. National Dir Dave Burns Chapter Directors Randy Gibbs Membership Joy Gilles Wagon Master Denny Wheeler Appointees The Coasters had another terrific gathering at the Christmas Rally at Wine Country RV Resort in Paso Robles. We had thirty one rigs, as well as several local members who came for one or two nightly events. Sunday The Rally Committee showed up a day early to get the clubhouse decorated and meet about the week s plans. If you have never been on a Rally Committee, give it some thought. Sunshine Sylvia Burns Historian Donna Brodt Photographers John Stocksdale Sharon Rendall Newsletter Editors Court & Cris Warren COASTER CHATTER PAGE 1

This is a great way to get to know people from the Club. We always seem to have really good committees; everyone pitches in to help. This Rally was no exception. Our committee members (Joy & Tim Gilles, Judi & Lance Brown, Rhonda & Mike Catron, and Susan & Steve McAbee) were really there to help and assist. Monday Early Monday afternoon all of us settled into our arranged sites. On Monday afternoon we were informed by the RV Park that we could not go forward on our very much planned Wednesday afternoon wine tasting unless we were able to get a one day permit from the State Alcohol and Beverage Control (ABC). This concern arose because one of the wineries had called the RV Park, wanting to know if we had the required permit. Our hero and MVP, Steve McAbee, went into high gear and took care of this very quickly. He discovered that if we have a private party and the wineries are not charging for their wine, we don t need a special permit. Case closed and relief all around. Great job, Steve! After all of our rigs were leveled, hooked up to utilities, and settled in, we were all looking forward to a well-deserved happy hour. COASTER CHATTER PAGE 2

During happy hour, out of the woodwork came hearty appetizers, prepared beforehand by someone from each rig. To be realistic, nobody needs more food after one of our events. Culinary majesty was on full display. This year s hearty appetizers might have been better than last year s, but that s just because it is still so fresh on our minds. Joy outlined the upcoming schedule for the week. Steve talked about some of the many things to see and do here in Paso, besides wine. It was all good stuff! Tuesday Tuesday was our busiest day. The Committee served a breakfast of scrambled eggs, along with many loaves of persimmon, pumpkin chocolate chip, lemon, orange cranberry and banana bread that Joy had baked beforehand. Following breakfast, we had the Club meeting and installation of officers. Under LeRoy s expert supervision, we solved all of the Club s problems in 35 minutes.. For those of you who have never attended one of LeRoy s meetings, you re really missing something. This guy knows how to do it! Do you remember attending some meetings during your working life where things become so encumbered by unnecessary tangents, while all of the important things go off the rails? This never happens in one of Leroy s meetings! He prepares ahead of time, starts at the appointed time, and ends before time is up. Be sure to thank him for all of his hard work. Continued COASTER CHATTER PAGE 3

Kerry and Robin Ray held an open house at 1pm on Tuesday at their brand new 35 Newmar diesel pusher. It is a beautiful rig. Nobody spilled Champagne on the floor of their new coach, but it wasn t because they didn t provide everyone with a taste. It rained on Tuesday afternoon, but not enough to slow anybody down. After Happy Hour with light appetizers provided by the Committee, we had a catered dinner by Steins. If that wasn t enough for the day, the yearly auction took place after dinner. Leroy did a fine job as auctioneer. Pam Meyer entertained us showing the items. We raised $949 for the Club. Everybody had a great time and there was lots of laughter all around. Wednesday On Wednesday we had a day on our own for everyone to enjoy wine tasting and/or enjoying the things to see in Paso. COASTER CHATTER PAGE 4

From 4-5:30 we had a wine tasting at the Clubhouse presented by four wineries; Eberle, Mitchella, Vina Robles, and EOS. The wineries seemed to be competing to provide each of us with their best pour. All of them extended an opportunity to our members to purchase their wines at 20% off. Eberle went a bit further in extending our members a 40% discount to retired Veterans and law We had a lasagna dinner (prepared by the committee) and desert that night. After dinner Ron Miller entertained us with his excellent guitar playing and singing. People were dancing long into the night. Thursday We enjoyed another free day. There are so many things to see and do in the area. Just down the road, next to the airport, is the Estrella Airbirds Museum. It is only open Th-Sun from 10-4, so today was our chance. http://www.ewarbirds.org/museum/aboutus.shtml Another must see museum is the Pioneer museum in downtown Paso Robles. http://www.pasoroblespioneermuseum.org That evening we had happy hour and social time, with light appetizers provided by the committee. Santa Claus (Arnie Burr) was available for photos. COASTER CHATTER PAGE 5

Our 6:00 dinner of prime rib and apricot chicken was catered by Steins again. They do such a wonderful job! Story time with Santa was brought to the membership by Santa s favorite helper (Joy). Twas the night before Christmas was read with lots of little twists during the narration as we passed gifts right and left. Let s just say a fun time was had by all! Friday Friday was Happy Trails to All. Thanks to all who donated to the auction and to Toys for Tots. The first order of 12 flags has been made and sold out. Contact Randy if you would like a flag from the next order. New Business: The club s new Sunshine person is Sylvia Burn. It was seconded, and the motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 10:05 a.m. Submitted by Pam Meyer, Secretary COASTER CHATTER PAGE 7
