A TASTE OF ICELAND With the possibility to view the magnificent Northern Lights!! March 1 7, 2020 March 1, Sunday: Departure from the U.S. Departure today from your home airport in the U.S. Overnight flight to Iceland. March 2, Monday: Arrival in Iceland This morning we arrive in Iceland. After clearing Customs and Immigration transfer to our hotel in Reykjavik. We will be staying 5 nights at the Hotel Klettur conveniently located in downtown Reykjavik with the main shopping and dining street only a 10 minute walk from the hotel. The balance of the day is at leisure explore the area around our hotel in this picturesque capital city of Iceland. March 3, Tuesday: South Shore Adventure We will take a journey through the stunning landscape of Iceland s south coast. This is the land of Njál s Saga a region of breathtaking scenery and legendary stories. During our guided tour we ll encounter the wonderful variety of the south: from the wide plains formed by glacial rivers, to the sheer sea cliffs of Dyrhólaey or Reynishverfi, and to the spectacular waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. In clear weather we ll experience unforgettable views of the Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes and, if the conditions are right, the Westman Islands. We ll visit the Lava Center, an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition depicting volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland. Return to our hotel late this afternoon. (B) March 4, Wednesday: The Viking World Museum, The Blue Lagoon and an evening hunt for the Northern Lights Our tour will begin at the Viking World Museum, home of the Viking Ship Íslendingur (the Icelander). Built in 1996, the Icelander is an exact replica of the famous Gokstad ship, a remarkable archaeological find of an almost completely intact Viking ship, excavated in Norway in 1882.At Viking World we will have lunch and you will also have time to view the Viking millennium exhibition produced by the Smithsonian Institution called Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga. This exhibition sheds light onto
the Norse settlement and explorations of unknown lands. These two fine projects, both celebrate Iceland s central role in the discovery of North America a 1000 years ago by the Norse Vikings. Following our time at the Viking World Museum we will go to the nearby, world-famous Blue Lagoon, where we will spend time relaxing in the geothermal mineral waters. The Lagoon is a unique wonder; a lake with pleasantly warm mineral-rich geothermal water in the middle of a black lava field. The high natural levels of silica and minerals give the Lagoon its rich blue color. The facilities include modern changing rooms and showers, an indoor geothermal pool, a massage waterfall, restaurants and other services. A visit to the Blue Lagoon is both invigorating and exiting, whether one bathes there surrounded by snow in the middle of the winter or in the long summer daylight. After our time at the Blue Lagoon we will return to our hotel. In the evening we ll go on a hunt for the Northern Lights, where we go depends on where the best conditions are each night. Because this tour is weather dependent sightings are not guaranteed. However, if we don t see any Northern Lights during this tour we are welcome to join the tour on another evening at no additional cost. (B,L) March 5, Thursday: Reykjavik City Tour Our day will begin with a city sightseeing tour of the northernmost capital in the world, Reykjavík, where more than a third of the Iceland's population lives. During this tour we will see the harbour, the Pearl, the National Museum and Höfði house, the summit site of 1986. We drive past the city's salmon river, an indication for Reykjavík s low - pollution levels, and the Árbæjarsafn outdoor folk museum, which offers an interesting contrast to the modern buildings of the most recent part of Reykjavík. Our drive continues past Reykjavik's largest outdoor swimming pool in Laugardalur which is heated with water from natural hot springs under the city, the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture museum and Hallgrímskirkja Church (whose steeple is a Reykjavík landmark). There is no better way to understand what Reykjavík has to offer in just a few hours. The balance of the day is free for shopping or relaxing in this beautiful city. (B) March 6, Friday: The Golden Circle The most popular and amazing tour from Reykjavik is the Golden Circle. Combining natural and historical wonders, we ll experience Iceland s landmark attractions in one incredible day: the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the spouting hot springs of Geysir, and Þingvellir national park, site of the Viking parliament and over 1000 years of history. This classic tour is not to be missed. We ll also visit Fridheimar tomato and greenhouse farm where we ll have an introduction into how the family uses Icelandic nature to cultivate tomatoes and other items.
