The Victoria Cruising Club originally started as the Victoria Outboard Club in September 1956. In those days members' vessels were not very large by today s standards but everyone had good times cruising our wonderful local waters, often complete with children and pets. It was around 1970 that the Club's name was changed to the "Victoria Cruising Club". Through the years the VCC fleet has seen other changes including the boats (they re bigger) and members (they re older). But we still have the outboards, although these days they re on our dinghies. Commodore Jan Ward and the VCC Bridge are keen to make our diamond anniversary a special year and are seeking ideas from members (see p.6 under New Business). All ideas are welcome. It could be something small or large, it could be a special event, or something totally different - it s an opportunity to get creative. And if you have interesting pictures or stories about VCC in days gone by, why not share by submitting them to Kicker Kapers? Recent stories are welcome too. Last but not least. The picture to the right shows Jan presenting the Secretary Dangle and Flag to Karen Brown. On the water look for the Secretary Flag flying on Sea Dancer. KK Editor

Announcements & Other Business Unfinished Business None. New Business Diamond Anniversary Celebration Commodore Jan Ward revealed that the Victoria Cruising Club was incorporated on Sept 20, 1956, as an outboard motor club. This makes 2016 the 60th anniversary for the club, the diamond anniversary, and it s considered quite an accomplishment. The Bridge is looking for ideas from members on how to celebrate the anniversary. It could be something at a single event or for multiple events throughout the year. Please contact Commodore Jan Ward (vcccommodore@gmail.com) with your ideas. In Gerry s absence, Jan presented for members consideration the idea of a club vest and or jacket to commemorate the anniversary. It would have the VCC logo & 60th anniversary embroidered on the chest. A sample of a ladies vest was shown in two tones, and Jan suggested that the black version would work nicely with tone-on-tone embroidery for the logo. (Fortunately yellow is not available.) There are other options. Jan has catalogues with a couple of other styles available. Kathy Hargreaves has an alternate source, and will bring samples to next meeting. Mike Walker indicated that the club owns a digitized VCC logo for embroidery. There was some caution that we may have to pay for its use with a different vendor. There was interest in the Bridge pursuing the idea of a club vest or jacket. Options will be presented and further discussed with members at the February VCC meeting. Speakers Jan Ward related that everyone seems to enjoy the guest speakers that we have had at our meetings. The Bridge is undertaking to have more speakers and would like member input. Please advise if you know of someone who would be good and willing to give a short talk at a meeting. Announcements, Anniversaries and Birthdays Mike and Carol Walker celebrate their 50 th Wedding Anniversary on January 29 th. Jack and Linda Parry celebrate their 20 th Wedding Anniversary on January 31 st. Gerry and Shirley King celebrate their 44 th Wedding Anniversary on January 8 th. Rodger Hargreaves celebrated a birthday on December 24, 2015. KK Editor note: he s got us guessing on the number. The volunteers who signed up to provide goodies for February s meeting are: Wanda Dalzell, Pauline Critchley and Carol Walker. Mary Hunter Trophy Mike Dalzell told a good story. Adjournment Move for adjournment by Wilf Ryder and seconded by Pauline Critchley. Carried. Meeting adjourned at 8:13 pm. Minutes were recorded and submitted by Secretary Karen Brown Members Corner 6

Are there boating stories, photos, announcements and other fun things you d like to share with VCC members? Here s your spot! It Started at the Commodore s Ball Here is some heartwarming, wonderful news Alex Muff and Sandra Renton have become engaged! It all happened over the New Year s weekend while a group of VCC ers were docked at the Port of Sidney. During one of the Happy Hours on board Aralee, Alex got down on one knee and declared to Sandra how important she had become to him and asked her to be his partner for the rest of his life Pauline and Alice would not let her answer until they had grabbed their cameras!!! She finally said, OF COURSE, I WILL, ALEX. She was later overheard saying how fortunate she felt to have met such an exceptionally kind human being. They have been inseparable since they met at the Commodore s Ball. Congratulations to both! Story by Alice Kool Our first VCC event of 2016 is the Valentine s Brunch. The venue is Mary s Bleue Moon at 9535 Canora Road in Sidney. The menu and cost ($20 per person) are the same as in 2015. To make it even better, this year it happens on Valentine s Day itself. You didn t sign up and pre-pay for brunch at the January meeting but you d still like to come? You must contact Pauline Critchley paulinecritchley@shaw.ca and arrange to pay in advance. Do it now!
