BRUCE MINES AND AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Tuesday, July 03, 2012 UNION PUBLIC LIBRARY 8:00 A.M. WEBSITE: www.brucemineschamber.com Email: info@brucemineschamber.com Present: *Brian Torrance Torrance Custom Interiors *Arlene Romberg The Chip Wagon *Marla McPhee M & J Hair Boutique *Michael Peever Mae-Ger Treasures *Larry Peterson Peterson & Peterson Law Firm *Ted Alleway Iron Thistle Garage Guests: Regrets: Pat Peterson Bruce Bay Cottages & Lighthouse Lory Patteri Town Councillor Call to Order: Brian Torrance called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. Past Minutes : Motion: Larry Peterson + Michael Peever moved that the minutes of June 05, 2012 be approved carried Treasurer s Report: - Motion: Larry Peterson + Michael Peever the financial report as presented be approved carried. Geothermal Energy - no report Insurance: - Larry Peterson reported the premium of $1,620.00 has been paid French Fryer: - Lory Patteri sent in the following reports: Car Show The car show went well. The weather cooperated and we fried from about noon to 4pm. We had a issue with the first fryer that we brought to the site which put us behind schedule by about an hour. None of the men that tried could light it and it will need to be addressed prior to the Fall Fair since we do use all 3 fryers for that event. We brought in about $755 for that event.

Community Day Sat. June 30, 2012 Thank you to the Chamber for the donation of $400 towards the fireworks display. As stated earlier, foot traffic was down even though weather was nice. Afraid that some might have not realized events were on the Saturday since I did get some calls at home on the 1st wondering if the fireworks were that evening. Crystal Reader went above and beyond, as per usual. In order for this event to continue, more volunteers are needed and those that volunteer need to be counted on for the entire event. Community Day was not as profitable. The event started at 4pm and we opened on schedule. Although consistent, the traffic appeared to be down quite a bit from last year and the overall sales reflected it. We made only about $469, less than half of last year. I made the decision at about 9pm to start to close since customers were few and far between. Although the weather was warm and sunny, the wind prevented us from using the canopies. We had tried to put them up earlier in the day and the strong winds just blew them down. Special thanks to Howie, Alex, and Claudia who helped with the "schlelpping" for the Car Show, and to Art Bennett who helped us with the fryers. Thank you to Larry and Pat for the use of their generator for both events. Thanks also to Alex Gamble and Mike, Carolyn and Dave Peever and Marla who helped Leah and I cart the stock and equipment from point A to B to back again on community Day. Thank you also to Richard O Hara who hooked, unhooked and started up the fryers for us. To Brian, Peggy, Dawn and Penny - thanks for manning the station while Leah and I were on parade. The proceeds for Community Day was a disappointment this year - less than half of what was brought in last year. Proceeds for the 5 hours of fry time were $468.91. Weather was great - sunny and warm - but traffic seemed to be down drastically from last year. Could be due to change from Canada Day to Community Day, Vettes for Vets running at same time, along with 2 local family reunions. Lots of stock still on hand for the fall fair. Leah and Lory will inventory within next couple of weeks A special thank you to Jr. and Monica Loughran! After talking with the Loughran s, Lory went to pay the Chamber tab at the Shell for gas and ice and it had been donated by Jr. And Monica! Lory will be sending out a Thank You on behalf of the Chamber Horse Show As per the email sent to the Chamber Board previously, I was approached by Darlene Walsh and asked to do the Horse Show on two days notice - I declined. Fall Fair Looking forward to the last event - the Fall Fair - since we do not have to move anything off the premises.

Web Site: - Michael Peever reported that Arlene Romberg has been working on the brochure updating information Arlene is coming up with information sheet which will be used for the brochure and the website so both sources will have consistent information. Membership: - (old report) Michael Peever reported that memberships are coming. Francine will do the certificates and send them out. Michael is encouraging other businesses and people to join the Chamber. Four & Friends Art Show & Sale: (old report) Brian Torrance reported the event will be held on July 6, 7, and 8 2012 at the Rydal Bank Hall The hours are changed to 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. no evening hours since they are off the highway. All events will be held at Rydal Bank. Highway signs ART SHOW TODAY with an arrow. Ungated Tourist Attraction: Marla McPhee reported that Rod McLeod will be building the base and the sculpture is expected up this week. Bruce Mines Historical Society: - Ron smith sent in the report that he is still working on the HODG Grant. The Museum will be manned with a combination of volunteer and student staffing for the summer. Museum hours are from Tues. to Sat. 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with Sunday and Monday 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Rydal Bank Historical Society: - no report Library no report Town Improvements no report Royal Canadian Legion no report Lions Club: - no report SnoGlyders no report Sylvan Circle: - no report Agricultural Society: - no report Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce: - Larry Peterson circulated handouts received from the Soo Chamber

Community Hall Lory Patteri sent in the following report: Still waiting on final drawings of design from the engineers. Town is prepared to send out tender request the minute we have the designs. Still hopeful that the building will be completed for Remembrance Day. Trade Fair has been cancelled for 2012. The project will be reviewed later in 2012. Joint Advertising Committee - Committee Members Michael Peever, (Chairman) Norm Hern, Howie Bowes, Arlene Romberg Michael Peever reported that all information should be into Cliffe Printing Algoma Kinnewabi Tourist Association: - no report Simpson Mine Shaft: - Lory Patteri sent in the following report: - Repair work has been about 95% completed and the shaft is open for the tourist season. It looks wonderful! Ted Leahy was given a tour and he was thrilled with the results. Town had purchased a new sign that was supposed to be completed for Community Day opening but still waiting on Copper Bay Designs for finished product and installation. Business of the Month - no report Healthy Communities:- (old report) It is understood that Sean Hanlon will be replacing Cindy Stonehouse-Jones in order to complete the project while Cindy is on maternity leave.. Channel Geocache Event Larry Peterson reported that on Sunday June 10, 2012 GPS and compass 101 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. was held at the Lighthouse Lounge at Bruce Bay Cottages. A total of 10 participated in the all day event and everyone had a fabulous time. Michael Peever reported he cannot believe the people coming into the store asking about geocaching. Correspondence: none Clarks Bridge: Larry Peterson reported that he attended the public meeting at the Township Hall over 50 people were in attendance. Letters of Concern from the Chamber of Commerce + Bruce Bay Cottages & Lighthouse were read at the meeting. Township Council will take the comments under study for a decision to be made later. The main importance of Clark s Bridge it is the

only access (other than public roads) for snowmobiles from Sudbury and Algoma East to have access to food, fuel and accommodations in Bruce Mines and area. New Business: Next Meeting: Tuesday August 07, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. at the Library. Executive Meeting T.B.A. Adjournment: at 8:45 a.m. NOTES
