THIS MONTH IN MALTESE HISTORY by Mona Vella-Nicholas SEPTEMBER IN MALTESE HISTORY September 8, 1800 --- After only two years of occupation, French forces leave Malta for good, ceding the islands to the British. The French occupation starts when the Knights of Malta surrender to Napoleon and leave Malta in 1798. In spite of taking some progressive actions during their stay, such as abolishing both slavery and the inquisition, the French are very unpopular with the locals, who stage rebellions with help from the British navy. Tired of these rebellions, as well as the hunger and disease which plague the islands, the French negotiate an agreement with the British navy. They pull out without a shot being fired. Malta becomes a British protectorate for nearly 170 years. End of September/ beginning of October --- The annual olive oil festival takes place in Zejtun. Among the activities: the farmers bring their olives to the presses for making olive oil, olive oil tastings are offered to festivalgoers, folk singers and folk dancers entertain the crowds, and family pets are brought to school by the children to receive a blessing. Origin of Maltese Last Names Dimech Is your last name Dimech? If so, you may be interested in knowing where your name comes from. Dimech is of Italian origin. It comes from a pet name for the name Domenico, or Dominic in English. It started out as "De Domenico", but was eventually shortened to Dimech. If you are a Dimech, then one of your ancestors was named Dominic.
