MAINSHEET Good Friends, New Beginnings http://www.corinthianslhp.com Corinthians of Lighthouse Point Our 52 nd Year Number 3 Ocean Reef Boating Weekend January 11 th 14 th We were blessed with calm seas and beautiful weather at Ocean Reef. It was one of our best weekends we have had there. Many of us enjoyed long pickle ball and tennis matches on Saturday and Sunday. Others relaxed, shopped or even fit in 9 holes of golf. Friday night was happy hour at the Burtons and a great dinner at the Islander. Thanks to Michael Baron, we all now know their hash browns are a must get. Saturday night was docktails and a pot luck dinner on How Lucky Again. The food was abundant. We tested the limit on how many people we could fit on the Baron boat and Bea Nieds was even surprised with a birthday celebration. 52 nd year NUMBER 3 February 2019 1

Commodore s Report: by Leslie Baron Hello Fellow Corinthians. I am feeling so blessed to have had a wonderful January with you. Thank you to all of you who made the trip to Ocean Reef so successful. Laura Burton, Fader Reichard and Michael Baron put together a weekend of fun. The information meeting and happy hour at the Seaside Grill was well attended. Although we will be having only one information meeting monthly during this year, we hope to have Thursday night happy hours much more frequently. Several local restaurants are happy to welcome the Corinthians, so please watch for email blasts to announce where our next happy hour will be. Twenty women had a wonderful afternoon at the Wick Theatre in Boca. A big thanks to Joann Fairweather and Miriam Maguire for hosting this event. Also, we are currently working on getting the roster directory ready for printing. There had been some issues converting the previous MAC files onto a PC, but as soon as the kinks are all worked out, the printer will be getting the file and hopefully the books will be ready for member distribution shortly after. Lastly, I want to thank all of the Corinthians who have accepted the changes we have had to make recently and continue to support our club. I know it hasn t been an easy change, so your cooperation and continual positive attitude are greatly appreciated. We are planning so many fun events this year, both for boaters and non-boaters alike so that all members will have opportunities to be together in unity. Please keep in mind this year s theme, Good friends, New beginnings. Wishing all of you a happy February! Rear Commodore s Report: by Fader Reichard We had a very successful Ocean Reef trip in January! A huge thank you to the Burton's and the Baron's for all that they did! Friday night happy hour was hosted by the Burton's with dinner followed at the Ocean Room. Saturday, thank you Laura and Michael for arranging and coordinating pickle ball and tennis! We had so much fun we needed more court time. Saturday night cocktails, appetizers and dinner was hosted like we used to do on the dock and aboard the Baron's yacht! The weather was perfect, the food was spectacular and the camaraderie of so many Corinthians being together made for the perfect evening! Everyone had time this weekend to shop, lie by the pool, hit the Burgee bar and golf. Sunday we had more tennis and everyone had a great weekend. Thank you to all those who attended and helped out for a rocking fun weekend. Please look at all the exciting fun events that are listed here in all the ads. So many have signed up to assist and chair so many activities - we have SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! 52 nd year NUMBER 2 January 2019 2

Wick Theatre Luncheon January 23rd, 2019 A FUN AFTERNOON AT THE WICK THEATER MUSEUM AND LUNCHEON Twenty ladies toured the narrated collection of 50's and 60's clothing bringing back so many wonderful memories of television shows like " I Love Lucy", "Carol Burnett", "Milton Berle", "Sonny & Cher", etc. Also displayed were Broadway show costumes, i.e. "West Side Story", "Bye Bye Birdie" and others! Luncheon followed in their lovely dining room where Corinthian ladies shared three nicely decorated round tables. All seemed to agree that their 3-course meals were delicious, followed by a delightful singing performance by a Wick Theater professional. The finale was a fascinating review of how the Theater came into existence as related by one of the Wick daughters who also acted as our Tour guide. 52nd year NUMBER 2 January 2019 4

GPS works because of Einstein s Theory of Relativity GPS is based on an array of 24 satellites orbiting the earth, each carrying a precise atomic clock. Using a GPS receiver which detects radio emissions from any of the satellites which happen to be overhead, you can determine latitude, longitude and altitude to an accuracy which can currently reach 4 meters, and local time to 50 billionths of a second. But things are not simple. The satellite clocks are moving at 14,000 km/hr in orbits that circle the Earth twice per day, much faster than clocks on the surface of the Earth, and Einstein's theory of special relativity says that rapidly moving clocks tick more slowly, by about seven microseconds (millionths of a second) per day. Also, the orbiting clocks are 20,000 km above the Earth, and experience gravity that is four times weaker than that on the ground. Einstein's general relativity theory says that gravity curves space and time, resulting in a tendency for the orbiting clocks to tick slightly faster, by about 45 microseconds per day. The net result is that time on a GPS satellite clock advances faster than a clock on the ground by about 38 microseconds per day. To determine its location, the GPS receiver uses the time at which each signal from a satellite was emitted, as determined by the on-board atomic clock and encoded into the signal, together the with speed of light, to calculate the distance between itself and the satellites it communicated with. The orbit of each satellite is known accurately. Given enough satellites, it is a simple problem to compute the receiver's precise location, both in space and time. To achieve a navigation accuracy of 4 meters, time throughout the GPS system must be known to an accuracy of 15 nanoseconds, which simply corresponds to the time required for light to travel 4 meters. But at 38 microseconds per day, the difference in satellite clocks is so large it would cause navigational errors that accumulate faster than 10 km per day! GPS accounts for this by electronically adjusting the rates of the satellite clocks, and by building mathematical corrections into the computer chips which solve for the user's location. Without the proper application Einstein s general theory of relativity, GPS would fail in its navigational functions within about 2 minutes. -Submitted by Lee Maguire 52 nd year NUMBER 2 January 2019 6
