Merced County has rich agricultural land and is the fifth largest agricultural county in the nation, generating dairy products, nut trees (almonds, walnuts, pistachios), grapes (wine), poultry, cotton, sweet potatoes, alfalfa, and cattle. Three rivers run through the county, providing irrigation for crops: the Chowchilla, the Merced, and the San Joaquin. Like much of California, Merced County has a short rainy season in the winter and a long, dry growing season. LOS BANOS The City of Los Banos is situated on the west side of Merced County, near the junction of State Route 152 and Interstate 5. Conveniently located in the center of California, Los Banos is about two hours from San Francisco, Sacramento and Yosemite National Park. Monterey and San Jose are accessible in one and a half hours. Los Banos is a family-oriented community, which has managed to maintain its small-town atmosphere. As of 2016 the estimated population is 38,372.
