There will be no trash pick-up on January 1 and curbside trash service will be delayed by one day for the holiday. Good news! In addition to the three awards we announced last week, the Kern Council of Governments has also selected the City to receive the Regional Award of Merit Local Government for the City s work on the Making Downtown Bakersfield Vision Plan. The Vision Plan presents a 30-year development strategy to support revitalization and growth of Downtown Bakersfield. To achieve this, the Plan identifies strategic investments and policy recommendations that will attract growth and support the revitalization of Downtown. The Plan also makes Downtown ready for future grant opportunities by identifying methods to connect and build on existing resources like the Mill Creek Linear Park and to improve public spaces and expand access to Downtown. A key goal of the Plan is to improve the pedestrian experience for residents, customers, workers and visitors alike. The Vision Plan was adopted by the City Council in 2017, after more than two years of research and community outreach, which included the participation of more than 500 Bakersfield residents and stakeholders. General Information December 28, 2018 Page 2 Congratulations to Visit Bakersfield for preparing a winning application to the Kern County Tourism Promotion Grant Program. At its December 18 meeting, the Kern County Board of Supervisors awarded $10,000, the maximum amount allowed, for a printed brochure targeting visitors traveling between Yosemite/Sequoia-Kings Canyon national parks and Death Valley/Las Vegas. The brochure will be aimed at those travelers passing through Bakersfield, with the goal of enticing them to stop and visit local attractions, events, restaurants and hotels. It will be distributed at hotels and tourist locations near national parks as well as throughout Las Vegas. This is the second successful application Visit Bakersfield has prepared for the tourism grant program, which funds efforts to attract out-of-county visitors to Kern County to increase the economic benefits of tourism locally. Notable Items Congratulations to Real Property Manager Don Anderson, who is retiring after 27 years with the City. Don has been an integral part of many significant City projects over the years and received multiple Excellence in Action employee awards, including the Extra Mile award as the employee of the year. His most notable accomplishment is having supervised all of the property acquisitions for all TRIP projects over the last 11 years - a truly remarkable task. His leadership directly resulted in the property management team completing over 400 acquisitions for the Centennial Corridor Project. This momentous task was completed $30 million under budget, for which the budget savings were made available for construction activities. We thank Don for his dedicated tenure with the City and wish him all the best in retirement! The Bakersfield Fire Department has been engaged in several community events over the past few months. In November, several BFD staff members partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation as part of the annual Heroes & Helmets for Hope fundraiser. The event raised more than $51,000! All money raised stays within Kern County to help grant wishes to critically ill children. Last week, the Department held its 32nd annual Christmas Eve Task Force event. As part of the event, BFD staff, along with Santa Claus and Sparky the Fire Dog delivered toys to children at various hospitals and community service organizations throughout Bakersfield. A new feature of the upgraded council meeting management technology allows the public to easily view video clips of specific council agenda items from past meetings. This feature will be available for after all future council meetings and is now available for the December 12 th Council meeting at https://bakersfield.novusagenda.com/agendapublic/. Previously, council meeting videos were posted without the ability to cue up the video clip of a specific agenda item. This meant a viewer had to manually scroll through the entire meeting video to find the item they were wanting to view. This is one of several improvements underway will enhance the management of and access to council meeting content! The City offers several convenient ways to properly recycle Christmas trees. Recycling helps keep trees out of landfills and provides quality material for composting and wood chips. First, remove all ornaments, bulbs and lights, as well as plastic and metal stands. Trees can be dropped off at one of several convenient locations around the City: Mt. Vernon Green Waste Facility: 2601 S Mount Vernon Ave Bakersfield College south parking lot (corner of Haley Street and University Avenues) between December 26th and January 12th only. Cal State Bakersfield southwest parking lot (Camino Media and Southwest Drive) between December 26th and January 12th only. Kern County Fairgrounds parking lot (Belle Terrace and P Street) between December 26th and January 12th only. Christmas trees may also be placed in your residential green waste container by cutting the tree to fit inside the container. The lid must close completely and put out for regular pick-up on collection day. Flock or artificial trees cannot be recycled - place them in the tan container for disposal.
