TMRA Amateur Radio Beacon The Prez Sez July 2017 Prez Sez As Dave, KD8EVN, has said, June was an active and notable month for our club. Starting with the month-long Amateur Radio display at the Maumee Branch of the Lucas County Library, the operation of Special Event Station K8E from the S.S. Col. James M. Schoonmaker in the Museum Ships on the Air weekend; the presentation of a Forum at the Dayton Hamvention by one of our younger members, Lucas, W6LDS; the decision to make a major purchase to replace our repeater antennas with commercial-grade equipment; and finally to a new-format Field Day at the Wolcott House Museum that turned out to be somewhat unusual (and not just the great weather) as we were asked to suspend transmissions for 2½ hours Saturday evening as we were interfering with a paranormal group s investigations in the old buildings. That should get us a mention in QST s Field Day review! Thanks to all who took part. As I was elected President again - definitely my last year we have a vacancy on the Board of Trustees: the Executive Committee serves as a Nominations Committee when such vacancies occur, and we are nominating Rich KQ6EF to be elected for a 5-year term to fill that vacancy. Rich is a very active member of the Technical Committee and runs the satellite station at Field Day. A reminder that dues for 2107-2018 membership year are now due; for the 70 year-olds and over, dues are now $5.00 per year and a renewal form needs to be completed and given/sent to Ernie, K8EEE. TMRA has enrolled as a Non-Profit Organization in the Kroger Community Rewards Program, which returns to us a percentage (I think about 1%) of money spent on qualifying purchases at Kroger stores by registered Kroger Plus Card holders who have designated TMRA as their organization. I ll have details again at our meeting Wednesday July 12, or email me and I ll send you details on how to sign-up with Kroger. If you ordered a digital clock from Chrissy, KC8UFV, and haven t yet assembled it, we ll be having a kitbuilding session at the July meeting. We ll have soldering facilities there, or you can bring your own. It is important to have protection for the plastic tables if you can bring a small sheet of wood, metal, plastic to work on, it would be appreciated. Rob, KV8P, plans on opening the building around 6:30 pm for those, and not just the clock-builders, who can get there earlier than our meeting start at 7:30 pm. 73, Brian, WD8MXR 1

ARES News From Lucas County EC, Skeet, KD8KXD A reminder that the LCARES Monthly Meeting will be held Saturday, July 22th, time 9:00 am at St Luke s Hospital in the basement Private Dining Room near the cafeteria. Some folks come early to have breakfast. Thanks to all the operators that helped to provide communications for the Muddy Mini Half Marathon! I am still in the process of compiling a list of LCARES members who would be interested in receiving text messages to their cell phone. This method will be used to alert operators of important information such as Disaster call-up, where to tune your radio, and other items as needed. What I need from you is your cell phone number and your carrier. Send me an email to KD8KXD@arrl.net Congratulations to New Hams and Upgrades! From Chrissy, KC8UFV We had two upgrades in June: Brian, KE8EBJ, upgraded to Extra and David, KB8NXA, upgraded to Tech. And two new techs: Tabatha, KE8HEY, and Jonathan, KE8HEZ. Great Lakes HamCon TMRA s own Dave, KD8EVN, will be a presenter at Great Lakes HamCon in October. Dave will talk about the special event station, K8E, which TMRA set up under his leadership. A team of 28 hams set up three operating stations on the Col. James M. Schoonmaker for Museum Ships Weekend in early June. Dave will talk about how it all came together. For more information about Museum Ships Weekend please see the June 2017 issue of the Beacon. Great Lakes HamCon will be October 7-8, 2017 at Michigan International Speedway. Let s support Dave by being there! 2

Field Day 2017 By Steve, W8TER, Field Day Chair I would like to thank all of you for your participation in this year s field day. To those on the Green Team, the Pink Team and the Orange Team: There was much to do and you were right there to get it done. This is really what makes Field Day a success. Volunteers receiving a request to help and then going the extra mile to make the day a success. If a situation occurred and we were requested to setup a communication station, I believe we would know what to do and would do it efficiently. This is what Field day is supposed to do; help us become familiar with what it takes Steve, W8TER, hard at work. w8muk photo to operate in less than ideal situations. Aside from unpredictable delays we scored well and had 1391 contacts. A special thanks goes out to those who undertook a specific task and made it count. We approached this Field Day in a professional manner and represented our organization and our hobby well. Thank you for your participation and your dedication. 73, Steve Editor s Note: TMRA hams made almost fourteen hundred contacts on seven bands including eight satellite contacts. We contacted 76 sections, which included states, parts of states and Canadian provinces. In addition to the United States and Canada, we made contacts in Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Argentina, Brazil, and Oman. Fine business! We want to give a special thank you to Channel 11 TV for sending a reporter, Kelsey, and cameraman, Paul, to do a feature story on TMRA s Field Day. You can find links to the story and the individual interviews at the TMRA Website. Channel 11 Team prepares to interview Rob, KV8P, and Mike, WA8SYD - N8ZAK Photo Nothing tells the story of Field Day more than photos. Here are few thanks to Zack, N8ZAK, and Glenn, W8MUK. 3

Mobile Fox Hunt By Ron, N8RLH This month we begin the mobile fox hunts on 2 meters. By mobile we mean from cars rather than on foot. The hunt is a TMRA event and is open to all hams, not just TMRA members. This is an opportunity to involve your family and friends in one of the more exciting ham radio activities. On July 22 we will meet in the parking lot at St. Luke s Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. The hunt begins right after the ARES Meeting, about 10:30 AM. You will need a 2 meter radio and a direction finding antenna. We will provide a map, but you may want to bring your own if you want a large map with more detail. A compass for confirming the direction of the signal and a protractor and ruler for drawing the bearings on your map are also helpful. The rules are simple. The hunter with the lowest odometer mileage from the starting point to the fox is the winner. As winner you will receive valuable bragging rights and a mention in the August newsletter. You also will have the privilege of being the fox and providing coffee and donuts (or snacks) at the next fox hunt. If you have questions, I will talk about this at the July TMRA meeting. See you at the hunt!
