John and Martha Brown resided in the cottage opposite the Rose and Crown Inn. John was a traveller half his wife s age and, during his travels, met and had an affair with another younger woman. Jealous and scorned, Martha murdered her husband with a hatchet and disposed of his remains down a well. The inquest in to his murder was held at the Rose and Crown. Martha was subsequently tried in Dorchester and sentenced to death by hanging. Martha s execution was the last public execution at Dorchester and was witnessed by a young Thomas Hardye. He was so shocked by what he saw that he made reference to it in his literary classic Tess of the d Urbervilles.
