Box 3334, Batehaven, NSW, 2536 August 2015 Newsletter Next Club Meeting 7.30pm Monday 3 rd August 2015 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO Our August Birthday members Nil this Month Guest Speaker for Next Meeting is our own Ron Boyd Ron s subject is the progress of Cym. Australian Ginger Bronzy x Pywacket Cornflakes Please bring in your plants no matter what their conditions is and he will have a look at how they are all growing, if possible he will give some positive advice on how he see them growing. Just remember there is no competition on growing these plants just a big learning experience based on his knowledge of how I grow my Cymbidiums. Presidents Report Our Village Centre day this year was not a success due to members voting against buying Cymbidium Orchids to sell at the Village Centre and also at our Winter Orchid Show. Because there was no flowering Cymbidiums for the above Club functions we missed out on receiving free of charge approximately $500-00 worth of cut flower spikes which we use for the posies that we sell with all the proceeds as a profit. No members supplied Orchids for the Village Centre Day to sell, our club bought one Cymbidium from Bill & Joy for $20.00 for a raffle prize at the Village Centre and we sold 27 tickets on the day, so we made a profit of $7.00 compared to last year at the Village Centre we made a profit of $498-00. For a club of 60 plus members it was a poor response I must say I must thank all of our members that helped on the day at the Village Centre. We will cancel the next Village Centre Day, unless we receive more support from you our members it is just not worth the effort for the members who do put in the time.

The Winter Orchid Show for 2015 was successful, thanks to everyone that put in the time to help with the set up and helping out through the show. Total through the doors for both days was 336 people. Friday was the most patronised day. Congratulations to all members for benching Orchids and for those that won sections and champions. It was great to have Neville and Roberta Roper visit the show and also generously donate a lovely orchid for our raffle. It was a nice surprise for Dorothy to be able to visit as well. Thanks to Jim for re-doing our Banners for the Show at no cost to the club. I will get off my soap box for now. Lucky Door Prize was an unknown person. Raffle prizes 1 st to Robin Baker 2 nd to Wendy at the Botanic Gardens 3 rd to unknown 4 th to unknown and 5 th to Joy & Bill. Next club meeting is Monday 3 rd August meeting starting 7.30pmsharp, if you are benching please bench between 6.30pm & 7pm. No plants are to be benched after 7pm please. We start to vote at 7pm. Growing Comp Plant or Plants of the night 4 points 1 st in section 3 points 2 nd in section 2 points 3 rd in section 1 point and 1 point per plant per section. Growing Comp is still running. Sarcochilus Fitzhart x Sarcochilus Lyn and also Dendrobium Ellen, please bring these plants in. Next meeting please bring in your Cymbidium Orchid Australian Ginger Bronzy x Pywacket Cornflakes. Ron Boyd will be our Guest Speaker talking on this Cymbidium with some great tips to help you grow it well. Next Coffee / Chat day at the Botanic Gardens on Thursday 13 th August at 2pm come along and also bring your friends. Also coming up in November is our Orchid only Auction so start sorting out the ones you wish to sell, you can also donate or please place a paddle pop stick in the Orchid with your starting price and your name if you do wish to sell. Also at this stage your committee is thinking of holding our Xmas party at the Botanic Gardens in December we are waiting on a menu and costing, if you can think of elsewhere please let the committee know. Get well wishes to all recovering from illness or surgery? I am sure all club members will be thinking of Peter and Annette at this time. Sales sheets as well as Benching sheets were also available. There was a discussion on staking in regard to judging rules (Spring schedule to be updated to include staking requirements). Rob discussed the badges we are going to produce for sale at the conference. Rob advised that Maureen Miller had produced a roster for names to be provided to assist at shows and club events and encouraged members to put their names down (sheet was available at the front desk). Rob also produced samples of the sale plants just purchased from Tinonee Orchids. Rob also advised that the club had participated in a BBQ at the new Bunnings Store as well as one of the last ones at the previous store he acknowledged the support from some dedicated members who attended both BBQs. The first at the new store was extremely profitable (profit of $1478-45). Rob spoke at length in regard to the growing experience plants and that again only 2 plants were on the bench for judging. He advised that the committee are considering not progressing with any future plants for growing experience due to lack of participation. After some lengthy discussion it was revealed that the current 2 plant genera have been around for some time and at least 12 members at tonight s meeting were not members when this growing experience commenced. It was decided to continue up November meeting at which point the points will be tallied and a winner announced. This does not however effect to current Cymbidium which Ron Boyd will be speaking on in August. There was a short discussion on the growing experience plants benched and a discussion in how to prepare your plants for a show.
