Not a lot of flying this month as Sundays seem to be the worst day of the week. The mid-year dinner at the Rangitikei Club was well attended and a good night was had by all. Thanks to Bruce Fryer for the work he put in to organising this event. This month on the 22 nd is the Club auction, so come along with gear to sell and your cheque book to buy. July was a big month for me. Robin and I were to meet with friends in Scotland but I arrived at Heathrow Airport with what turned out to be blood clots on the lungs. I spent seven days in Hillingdon Hospital in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) where they looked after me very well. When I was allowed out we did see a bit of south London. A trip to Windsor Castle and Eton was very British and a day trip to the Hendon RAF Museum was a highlight. We had travel insurance and I would recommend that this is very important to have when travelling overseas. The Insurance Company flew a Doctor up from Kuala Lumpur to escort me home here to Palmerston North. I didn t need his services on the plane trip home but it was reassuring to know that he was there just in case. We flew home on Emirates through Dubai/Brisbane/Auckland/Christchurch/ Auckland and Air NZ to Palmerston North. Yes, we were diverted to Christchurch as there was a Qantas aircraft blocking the runway at Auckland. This was a long flight 36 hours. I did enjoy the flight from Heathrow to Dubai as this was on an Airbus A380. Business Class on this aircraft was very special. Many thanks to those who sent well wishes and who have visited me. This is much appreciated. Peter Vining President

Another quiet month for flying, glider was able to hold their competition. Merv had a handful of pilots take part. Combat was the same, just a handful. But I had a full house in my restaurant I ran out of meat patties not thinking everybody was just coming out for lunch the quickest sales I have ever had. Conditions under foot are still firm surprisingly for this time of year we would normally be slushing around in mud. Mid-year dinner at the Rangitikei Club was a good turnout of members. Happy Flying Club Captain. Make sure you check the club calendar: http:///apps/calendar/

Glider Report 2-metre Competition Sunday 4 th August 2013 The day started with a barely perceptible breeze from the north, though with exceptionally smooth air, so launches were typically soggy, resulting in times that were well below the target. Those conditions lasted until the end of the second round when a wind suddenly rose from the south-east. The bungee was quickly reversed and the third round flown with much improved launches and times. However, some fliers were caught out by the strengthening wind and made a final turn downwind which carried the model too far away with insufficient height to make it back to the landing circle, thereby losing valuable landing points. Prompt retrieval of the bungee and with two stop watches running, it meant that we could get through three rounds with nine contestants quite rapidly. Thanks are due to those who did more than their fair share of bungee retrieval.
