Seagate Yacht Club THE BURGEE PUBLISHED BI - MONTHLY November 2014

JOSEF DAVYDOVITS, COMMODORE I cannot believe that the year 2014 is almost behind us. We still have several terrific programs and events before the close of the year and before my term as your Commodore ends. It was a great year and gave myself and my commodorable wife Kim, a great opportunity to get to know all of you members better & gain deeper friendships. I also learned what a great club we have, and that is because of our membership. Each of you provide a very diverse pool of personalities which add to the club overall charisma. I am grateful for the 2014 board members who have supported me throughout this year. I take great comfort in knowing that we had an incredible team on the board and that their support enabled me to manage the Club. Last month we had our annual general meeting and nominated & voted in the new 2015 board. Lots of members showed up, probably the largest number for a few years, a good sign of the positive support we get from the membership. It is nice to see that we have new volunteers that come forward to join the board or volunteer as event hosts. This is the spirit that makes our club so unique! I want to thank, in this article, each volunteer (the emphasis here VOLUNTEER!!!) that served as a Host for a 2014 event. I will not list each of you here, you need to show up at the Commodore s Ball on November 15th, when we will recognize each one of you! However, I will mention the board members who served for many years and now have decided to allow others to take up the challenge. In no particular order: TOM Worden, our Webmaster, has served on the board for 14 years. He has diligently worked out there in the background to provide us the most comprehensive and best looking website. He and Jean also managed the House for many years before he switched to managing the website. Thank you, Tom, for many years of service, you truly will be missed. LINDA Axel will also leave the Board after 5 years of running the Ships Store and Membership. Thank you Linda for your support. LISA Zia, our Treasurer and decided to transfer the job of financials to the next volunteer.. All the club s financial information and accounts payable/receivables are handled by her (you wonder why anybody would do this for another year). A big thank you goes out to Lisa as her duties do not end at the board meetings. Thank you Lisa for doing a great job. JOEL Lander our Communications Chairperson, after 6 years, will also turn over this responsibility for the editor of our awesome bi-monthly Burgee publication. His talented work issuing and editing all the articles to make such a colorful and interesting publication will be difficult to follow. We are still looking for a talented member to take over this responsibility for 2015. Please contact myself or Joel if you wish to volunteer. SGYC wants You! I am looking forward to staying on the Board as an advisor and providing support the 2015 board. Please feel free to contact me with any issues and comments. Respectfully, your Commodore, Josef Davydovits GIL MORRIS, VICE COMMODORE Ahoy fellow boaters and Yacht Club members. On behalf of our SeaGate Yacht Club I want to thank the event host, Staff Commodore Ray Nagle & Jan and Dan & Chris Bates and our raft-up Captain and Robin & Jean Clark for a great Cruise and Raft-up. It was held just off Lido Island in Newport Beach. On Friday, they hosted a cocktail party with drinks and everyone brought appetizers. There was also a vodka tasting contest. On Saturday, we had happy hour and Dinner at Woody s Wharf. We had a great time. I want to thank all that came to the annual October meeting. It was a great turn out. I also want to thank each and every one who has volunteered for the upcoming events for 2015. The next event is the Commodore s Ball on November 15, 2014. It will be hosted by Commodore Josef Davydovits & Kim and will be held in the Sky Room of the Breakers Hotel in Long Beach. The Sky Room boasts the most gorgeous views in town spanning from the Pacific coast to the Hollywood Hills. This will be an elegant event and our time to give Commodore Josef and Kim our appreciation of an excellent year full of fun. Both of their smiles are always evident at each event. They have done a terrific job this year! The last event of the year is our New Year Eve party on December 31, 2014. It will be hosted by Vice Commodore Gil Morris & Chris. The evening will be a little different from the past few New Year s Eve parties. We will have dinner served and a special surprise with the music. More to come.

DR. MARK MONROE, REAR COMMODORE On October 1st, 2014 we had a meeting of the Holiday Boat Parade decorating committee at our house. We still need more volunteers to help us with putting the float together. Bob McCormack was at the meeting to provide us with invaluable information about his experiences in past years. On October 7th, at our annual membership meeting, we had two more people sign up for this project. The next step is to lay out the props and we need a lot more people for this stage of the project. Please help us out as it is very important for the club to do well. We will send out an e-mail as soon as we set the date for the next meeting. Please let me know if you are interested in this fun project and e-mail me at romida777@yahoo.com. Hope to hear from you soon. Duffy Cruise A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL. that sums up the very enjoyable Duffy brunch cruise to Huntington Harbour Yacht Club. We really appreciated the reserved seating and the wonderful omelet and waffle bar. They had a good selection of foods and excellent service, all at a very fair price. Approximately fifty SGYC members converged on HHYC on Sunday for the Duffy Cruise to HHYC Brunch and camaraderie. A thank you to Jr. Staff Commodore Jeff & Bonnie Specht for arranging and promoting this nice event is in order. This is the last boating event of the season and the weather was beautiful. We can t wait until next year s events to begin. To HHYC Our new member, Betty Hickey, is the volunteer travel coordinator for the Huntington Beach Senior Center. In her capacity she plans, organizes and in many cases accompanies groups on the planned excursions for adults. Betty is very good at this activity. If you would like to participate in any of the outings Betty plans she can reached at the Huntington Beach Senior Center at 714/536-9387. The following is the schedule of excursions for the balance of the year: KELLOG CEREAL BARON S ESTATE TOUR & ARABIAN HORSE SHOW With Japanese & Rose Gardens & Included Buffet Lunch Sunday, November 2, 2014 Fun Excursions CANDLELIGHT, STAR BRIGHT Heritage Hill Candlelight Tour, Tessman Planetarium & Included Supper at White House Restaurant Saturday, December 13, 2014 LITTLE ITALY CHRISTMAS With Included Italian Lunch & Del Mar Lights Wednesday, December 17, 2014 ROSE PARADE Thursday January 1, 2015.Box Lunch Included Join us for the spectacular 2015 Rose Parade. We have limited grandstand seating available. Bus parking is approximately 1/3 mile from parade route. All registrants under 17 must be accompanied by an adult. We will depart the Rodger s Senior Center at 6:30 A.M. Bus departs immediately after the parade. We will return approximately 3 P.M.

A wonderful day on the water was had by all, for the First Annual "Sails Up for Downs Syndrome" (SUDS) Charity Boat Ride. This was the initial idea of Hans Witten the Commodore of the American Legion Yacht Club. Together he and Josef Davydovits, Commodore of SeaGate Yacht Club & his wife Kim have been planning this first event, along with the leadership of Downs Syndrome Association of Orange County (DSAOC). We appreciate the willingness and generosity of the 3 Captains who provided their boats for the day; Captain Dennis Huffman of Bad Habit, Captain Robin Clark of Fintastic, & Captain Richard Knappes of Lucky Change. We had Commodore Witten along with his Fleet Capt. Anne Borren, Treasurer Marco Monters & Director Steve Sawdon in attendance as well as Commodore of SeaGate Yacht Club, Josef Davydovits and his wife Kim. The children ranged in age from 5-11 years of age and along with their families. There were 50+ for the 3 hour cruise inside Huntington Harbour Channels. We were very fortunate to have Sgt. J.Hollenback, Station Commander of the Harbour Patrol, arrange a fantastic water and siren display at the beginning of our cruise. All the boats circled around and were able to watch the spectacle and the kids were all very excited and amazed to see this. For most of these children this was there first time on a boat, so this was a monumental day for all. We hope to have one or more a year sponsored boat rides, alternating between Newport Beach and ourselves in Huntington Harbour. L-R: Jean Clark, Chrissy Bates, Ray Nagele, Jan Nagele, Robin Clark & Dan Bates This year s annual SeaGate raft up reverted back to a raft up only in the Lido basin anchorage area. There was a total of twelve boats. Fin-Tastic and Yorkshire Rose arrived first on Thursday morning to await the arrival of the fleet. We had our core anchor boaters plus some very welcome new additions. Thank you so much to Robin Clark, Dean Knupp and others for making sure everyone anchored safely. Also, many thanks to co-hosts Robin and Jean Clark for being such great cocktail hosts on the Friday evening, even though Jean had just had surgery and had her arm in a cast. We had fun with a vodka tasting contest organized by cohosts Dan (the man) and Chrissy Bates. Sherri Ferns won the vodka tasting. Then on to Saturday where the grand finale was at Woody s Wharf for dinner and awards. We very much enjoyed welcoming Nancy Sandvig and Russ Farber to their first SGYC event. They very recently moved into SeaGate and joined the Yacht club right away. Finally, many thanks to all our members boats who made this event wonderful. Fin-Tastic (Clark), Yorkshire Rose (Nagele), Cape Hatt R Us (Sambria), RO lll (D Angelo), La Fortuna ll (Aime), Cheryl Ann (Arndt), Knot on Call (Ferns), Sea-Renity (Haas), Kathleen (Lee), Chris Sea Gil (Morris), Senza Bambini (Giali/ Ricketts) ), Snug (Surridge) and to all our club members who drove down to Newport Beach. Sadly we missed Gimme 5 (Courtway) who always ferried so many of us back and forth. Speedy recovery Mike. Of course, we cannot forget our great Port Captains Rob and Cindy Allen for always taking care of us and Ray and Jan Nagele for co-hosting the event. It was a fun time and we look forward to many more.

SGYC NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT The position of SGYC Communications Officer requires a working knowledge of computers and some knowledge of desktop publishing. The Burgee is published every other month. We also submit articles from the Burgee to Harbor Light Magazine. The position does not require writing articles, but does involve some editing of ones that are submitted. I will be happy to share my layouts, routines, resources and contacts with the new Communications Officer in order to smooth the transition. The club needs a new officer by January 2015. If you have any interest in assuming the position I would be happy to fill you in on the details. You can reach me at 714/377-8989 hm or 714/655-1488 cel. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Hosts L-R: Nancy Knupp, Dean Knupp, Marilyn, Vaughn Jenkes and Pat Jenkes Under a canopy of twinkling lights, Rockabilly masters, The Killer West, guaranteed a toe tapping good time. SGYC hosts Dean and Nancy Knupp along with co-hosts Pat and Vaughn Jenkes provided the club with a blast-from-the-past by throwing a 1950's style sock hop to remember. Pit Masters from the Calabasas Catering Company made sure no one left hungry, members danced the night away in their vintage inspired wardrobe, and everyone enjoyed retro games and candy. Congratulations to each and every costume contest winner, you were all fabulous! A big thank you to all of the volunteers who were able to help decorate the clubhouse and a special thank you to the behind the scenes volunteers who made the event a success: Rob and Cindy Allen, Aurelia Okino, Dick and Linda Scholl and new member Tiffany Vlasik. See you all at the next event!
