Obtain a building permit from Poweshiek County. 2. Provide a copy of the Poweshiek County building permit, along with a drawing or sketch to the Holiday Lake Board of Directors. The drawing or sketch must include size of the improvement and distance of the improvement from each lot line. 3. Provide a copy of approved Poweshiek County Board of Health Application for permit to construct, reconstruct or alter a private sewage disposal system. Placement of septic must be on the drawing or sketch. 4. Establish lot line and maintain five (5) feet on sides and from back lot line or water. You must be 10 feet from the front lot line on the roadside. 5. The Holiday Lake Board of Directors must pre-approve the construction site and building plans with the bottom of this document completed and signed by the Holiday Lake Building Commission. 6. Lot owners are responsible for making sure the road is restored to its original condition if the road is

Failure to comply with the above will result in the lot owner being assessed with a Corporate Assessment including the cost of restoration of the roadbed due to damage incurred as a result of the construction. 7. A Corporate Assessment in the amount of $250.00 will be applied to the association members account if construction is started without Holiday Lake Board pre-approval. Use of Recreational Vehicles by Minors The Holiday Lake Board of Directors has received communications because of the numerous violations of the No minor under the age of 14 years shall be permitted to operate a recreational vehicle unless accompanied by an adult resolution. It is very difficult for some of the parents/grandparents that DO enforce the rules to explain to their children that some parents/grandparents feel that this is not an important resolution to follow. We do have security monitoring this at various times, but it impossible for a few people to see all the violations. We encourage All parents/grandparents not to let their underage children drive unless accompanied by an adult, 18 years of age or older. We also encourage All lake members to help monitor this and all of Holiday Lake s rules and regulations. If you witness any violations, please record the time, date, sticker number and color of the sticker, and description of the land or watercraft. We also ask that you describe the person or persons creating the violation.
Page 3 THIS PLACE MATTERS KENT UNION CHAPEL Kent Union Chapel represents an important, but little documented aspect of Iowa s social history. Constructed in 1909 by the women of the Kent Cemetery Aid Society, the building was the social and community center for farm families living within a five-mile radius. At the time of the chapel s construction, the area was settled by families of diverse religious backgrounds, including Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Catholics, Dunkards, Quakers and United Brethren. The Ladies Aid Society decided to build a non-denominational building hence the name union chapel. For more than 70 years until its closure in 1980, Kent Chapel was the religious and social center for the area. Jumping a century forward to 2009, Kent Chapel is beginning to make a comeback. With the blessing and generosity of the Showalter family, Kent Chapel is in the beginning stages of being rehabilitated back to a non-denominational chapel hosting seasonal services, weddings and funerals for the Holiday Lake and Brooklyn communities. The important step of preparing a National Register of Historic Places nomination has been completed and the nomination was overwhelmingly approved at the State Nominations Review Committee meeting June 12th. The nomination now goes to Washington D.C. for final approval. A preservation architect has been on site to inspect the building and has begun making recommendations for the building s rehabilitation. There is a committee in the process of forming and we are actively seeking lake and community area involvement. One important need is for individuals who can help provide historical insight into Kent Chapel and The Ladies Aid Society. We greatly desire to meet and speak with individuals who are familiar with the history of Kent Chapel and have stories to tell. Annual Holiday Lake Triathlon. The First Annual Holiday Lake Triathlon is history and we are now getting in gear for the Second! THANKS! THANKS! THANKS! THANKS! to all the volunteers and supporters. Something this big happens only when many work at it. We could never have done it without the expertise of Brian Bock, who knew the technical pieces that needed to get done for a successful triathlon. Wendy Schwab did a mountain of office work. I m afraid to mention other names, for fear of leaving someone out. Just: Thanks to You All! The participants were all very complimentary of the site, the volunteers, the organization, and the course. This included those who had participated in other triathlons. It was the hardest 5K run I ve ever done was a common sigh. There were 13 teams, made up of 36 participants. There were 121 individual participants, giving us a total of 157. If you want to see more data, check out our website: www.holidaylakebrooklynia.com. We will do this again; it will probably be bigger. Maybe you will want to sign up as an athlete. As soon as we set a date, we ll be looking for committee members. Will you be on that committee? We ll need more volunteers, so keep your pencil handy. Page 4 Independence Day was celebrated at Holiday Lake on Saturday, July 4th and Sunday, July 5th. 2009 Boat Parade Grand Marshalls were Donald and Jean Van Voorhis. We bought property here while bulldozers were still pushing yellow clay around the bottom of the lake. Both of us were born in Des Moines, began our studies there, Jean, an RN from Iowa Methodist Hospital and Don, a BA from Drake. We were married at the University Christian Church and moved then to Chicago to further our education, Jean eventually getting a BS and Masters in nursing from the University of Illinois, Don, a BD from the University of Chicago and a Masters from Governors State University. Our son, Damon, was born there. He now lives with his family (wife, Marti, two children, Lee and Kayla) near Tampa, Fl. We held a pastorate for a time in Coggon, IA. Our daughter, Devra, was born at St. Luke s in Cedar Rapids. She now lives with her family in Downers Grove, IL. (husband, Steve, four boys, Joe, Kendrick, Richard, Steven). Both our children grew up on the lake. Now our grandchildren enjoy it all summer long. We spent a number of years in England during the 60s, returning to serve out our professional lives in Chicago, Jean in nursing, Don in hospital administration. We built our lake cabin in the early 70s and came back and forth as we still do, wintering in Florida now, near our son. In retirement Jean is a Red Cross volunteer and has served as health service manager in many of the recent disasters, such as Katrina, San Diego fires, and Cedar Rapids flood last year. Her chapter is Iowa Rivers, Marshalltown. She serves as nursing liaison for both the states of Iowa and Florida. She is frequently at their national offices in Washington D.C., as she was this past month, advising on nursing issues, such as infection control related to the current flu pandemic. She has received their highest volunteer recognition, the Clara Barton Award. This year she was selected as one of 100 Great Iowa Nurses. Don enjoys oil painting. His work hangs in many of the world finest museums, e.g. his home, his kids homes and those of other relatives and friends. He serves on the lake s water quality committee and promotes an occasional bird census. 2009 HOLIDAY LAKE ACTIVITES Please keep for future reference. Saturday, July 25, 2009: - Annual Poker Run This will start at the Community Center and end at the Community Center. Proceeds will goes towards the fish fund. We are hoping for a lot of new people to join us this year. The Poker Run goes as follows, meet at the Community Center in your golf cart/atv, car or truck. After registration we stop at different host houses, where a snack will be provided and a playing card drawn by each person. Then after stopping at all the host houses we will meet back at the Community Center for a meal. Perhaps a fish fry/pot luck? Prizes for the poker hands will be awarded and a silent auction and music to entertain you while you get to know other lot owners from around the lake. In the five years since I have been here I had not missed many of the board meetings so I feel that I do care about what is going on and what can be done to make this a better place for everybody. I graduated from Guttenberg High School in Guttenberg, Iowa in May of 1976 and went back to college in 1996 after being laid off from Ertls Toy Company. That has taught me that you are never too old to learn. I have seen a lot of changes and some were good and some not so good. With the many jobs that I have had not only have I learn many skills that will help out here, I have also learned a lot about how to work with people. Katie Tomlinson Unit Three My husband Carl & I have owned property at Holiday Lake for the past 25 years. I am running for the Board of Directors as a representative of Unit 3 and will work for all of the lot owners of Holiday Lake. We reside in Tama and spend as much of our free time as possible at Holiday Lake. I have been employed by the State of Iowa for the past 30 years. Currently I am a Probation Parole Officer and supervise clients in all six counties of the Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services.
I have volunteered for numerous lake wide activities, In 2005, I was instrumental in organizing the 4th of July Kids Carnival. I facilitated the new security contracted by the Lake. If elected to the Holiday Lake Board, I will work hard with the community and the Board in a continuing effort to keep Holiday Lake as safe, worry free and beautiful as possible. Our family has many enjoyable memories of our time spent here and have seen many progressive changes in the past 25 years. I am willing to get more involved and help our community continue to grow and improve, by listening to the concerns and needs of our entire Holiday Lake Community. Drawing for afghan Holiday Laker Nancy Williams has crocheted a beautiful 6 x6 afghan in natural/fall colors and has donated it to the Community Center. Nancy s wishes are to raise money for automatic door closers to make the center more easily accessible for the handicapped. A drawing for the afghan will be held Sunday, September 6, after the Annual Pancake Breakfast. Tickets are one for $1 or six for $5. The afghan can be viewed at the Holiday Lake Office or online. Tickets will be available at the Holiday Lake Office or at events throughout the summer. If you haven t been by the Community Center recently to notice the latest work, drive by and check it out. The ground has been graded and seeded, a couple of trees have been planted, the new concrete drive has been done, as well as the installation of gutter and downspouts. All that is left would be a little landscaping to dress it up. Even though the Community Center is finished and is being used, donations are still needed to pay back the loan. If you have already made a donation, we thank you. But, maybe you would be interested in adding to your current donation to advance you to the next level. Chet Culver informing us that we would receive the 2008 Governor s Iowa for Environmental Excellence in the Water Quality category. We will be presented the award in person near the end of July. You can find the other winners by searching Iowa Governor s Award on the internet. There were 40 applicants and 14 winners. Ours appears to be one of the few that is grassroots initiated. There was an article and picture in the Poweshiek CR newspaper the week of 6/17/09. If you would like to read the application and letter from the Governor, it s in our notebook in the Holiday Lake Office. We have been meeting the last Saturday of the month at 9 am and invite any one who wants to be involved to join us. We also started water testing the first Tuesday of the month in both May and June and will continue until it gets too cold. For the first time we are doing our own testing for bacteria and E.coli in addition to the tests we started last year for oxygen levels, phosphates, nitrates, nitrites and Ph. There have been a couple of little glitches with the testing, but overall the lake is very healthy. The DNR asked and we volunteered to test 4 other sites on the watershed. One of our projects this spring was to write to 20 lawn care companies in the area to see if they use lake friendly chemicals. We told them that we would report to you if they do and if they do not.

The following information is for new Holiday Lake lot owners and for current lot owners to serve as reminders: Water Leaks and Repairs Poweshiek Water is responsible for all road repairs caused by them by fixing a water line. Please contact them if the road requires attention at 641-522-7416. Security Please report any suspicious or mischievous behavior to: Poweshiek County Sheriffs Office 641-623-5679 If you have an emergency, please have someone meet the emergency vehicles at the entrance that is closest to you (if possible). This can save them time in trying to locate you. 911 signs can be ordered and delivered to the lake office. The cost is only $23.00 and these are very helpful to emergency personnel, friends, and family. Siren: When there is severe weather moving into our area, we are notified by one or several agencies. Poweshiek Co. Sheriffs Dept.-National Weather Service-Emergency Management Service-NOAA Radio. We have two sirens that will be activated when we are notified of a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARN- ING or a TORNADO WARNING only. WATCHES will not activate the SIRENS. The sirens are for the safety of everyone, so please do not go outside to see what is happening. Go to the lowest point of your home such as a basement or under a stairway for your protection. If you do not have a basement, go to a closet or bathroom and try to stay away from windows. Kneel down on the floor and cover your head with either a blanket or pillows to protect yourself from injury.
One siren is located on North Lakeshore by the boat ramp and the other is on Holiday Lane. If anyone is interested in becoming a storm watch spotter, please give us a call. Coordinator: M.R. RED FLAG ALERT When a red flag is in place of the American Flag on the dam, this is to signify that there is to be no wake due to high water. When a red flag is placed on the flagpole, and at the North and South boat dock, there is to be no wake from watercraft. A lot of boats have floated off of lifts this year due to the high water. The Holiday Lake Board of Directors would like to thank all of the persons who rescued boats and helped inform boaters of the no wake rule. DOCKS You may dock your watercraft to the docks or coves for a maximum of two hours while going to eat etc., but under no circumstances is your watercraft to be left there overnight. RECYCLE BIN The recycle bin is located at the office inside the fence and is available during normal business hours. (Please do not put your recycle items over the fence) Please do not place: plastic bags, packing peanuts or trash/garbage (example: used paper towels) in the bin. Also, glass needs to be clear, no colored glass please. If these items continue to be thrown in the recycle bin, we will have to consider discontinuing the recycle bin. Bins are available for: metal, paper, magazines, broken down cardboard and number one and two plastics. (Please rinse or wash out cans, plastic and glass) POP CAN FUND All money from the collection of Iowa refundable cans and bottles goes towards the fireworks fund as well as the donations taken at the gates. Please empty cans and bottles and keep in separate containers. Iowa refundable cans and bottles only. No tea or water bottles. Please place these items in the recycle container. If you wish to make a donation to the fireworks fund, please make checks out to Holiday Lake Owners Association.
