PAGE 7 DON RAY HOME CENTRE Complete Line of Home Renovation Supplies GARAGE PACKAGES TOO!! 1100 MAIN STREET SYDNEY MINES BY PAUL POWER SAXON Thunderbolt - All Hail..the mighty Saxon has returned. After 40 years of combat on the heavy metal battlefields, and 21 albums under their shields they present us with this-album number 22, so prepare thyself. O.k., that introduction might be a bit dramatic, but it gets the point across that this is one of my all-time favourite metal bands, and that England s Saxon has been carrying the banner of classic heavy metal since 1977, and they were part of TNWOBHM (The New Wave of British Heavy Metal) influencing decades of metal bands that followed, and if this album is any indication Saxon shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. The album opens up with the opus Olympus Rising, which leads into the title track; Thunderbolt. This song is 100% pure classic heavy metal-and it bears all the hallmarks of the Saxon brand; great vocals by Biff Byford, wailing guitars by Paul Quinn and Doug Skarratt, pounding drums by Nigel Glockler and earth-shaking bass lines by Nibbs Carter. As for some of the other songs here, Predator is definitely the heaviest song-and rightly so 736-9722 as death metal singer Johan Hegg (of the band Amon Amarth) growls along with Biff Byford on a song that is not for the weak of heart. Just to show how diverse Saxon can be, the track They Played Rock and Roll is an over the top sound-alike tribute to the band Motorhead, with the number detailing Motorhead and the legendary Lemmy s history-with Saxon presenting the song in great speed metal fashion. Classic horror rears it s ghastly head on the track Nosferatu (The Vampire s Waltz) and history comes alive on Sons of Odin which is, of course, a Viking s dream come to life. The unsung heroes of the band, and rock in roll in general are paid tribute to in the number Roadie s Song. A Wizard s Tale gives a nod to the myth and legends surrounding Merlin and Camelot, and the track Sniper is faster than a speeding bullet, and hits the heavy metal bullseye. The mighty Saxon will grace Canada s shores in March, but alas, there are no concert dates east of Quebec. That means that this album will have to feed our heavy metal hunger for some time as we hope and pray that Saxon will continue to carry the banner of great heavy metal music onto our shores. NORTHSIDE COMMUNITY NEWS SYDNEY MINES LIBRARY NEWS It is with great sadness that we report on the sudden death of Librarian Barb MacLean who passed away on Friday, last week. Barb was a spark at the Library interacting with adults and children equally. She loved her job and always made sure I was informed on the upcoming activities taking place in the Library and the community at large. She was especially fond of the children and the programs and took great pride in seeing the younger ones enjoy the time at the Library. I know for a fact that she will be sadly missed by her coworkers and library patrons. PAGE 8 NORTHSIDE THIS WEEK - email - thisweek@kleeradio.com - 564-9022 TAX TIPS 2017 DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DEDUCT FROM YOUR RENTAL PROPERTY INCOME? Be sure that you are reducing your taxable income as much as possible with these important deductions from rental income: Advertising: You can usually deduct amounts paid for advertising of your vacant property. Insurance: You can deduct the premiums for insurance coverage on your rental property for the current year. Legal, accounting, and other professional fees: You can deduct fees for legal services to prepare leases or collect overdue rents. You can also deduct amounts paid for bookkeeping services, audits of your books and records, and preparing financial statements. You may be able to deduct fees and expenses for advice and help to prepare your income tax return and any related information returns. Maintenance and repairs: If you pay for repairs to your property, you can deduct the cost of labour and materials. However, you cannot deduct the value of your own labour. Management and administration fees: You can deduct the amounts paid to a person or a company to manage your property. You can also deduct amounts paid or payable to agents for collecting rents or finding new tenants. Office expenses: You can deduct the cost of office expenses. These include small items such as pens, pencils, paper clips, stationery, and stamps. Property taxes: You can deduct property tax assessed by a province or territory and by a Canadian municipality that relate to your rental property for the period when it was available for rent. Salaries, wages, and benefits (including employer's contributions): You can deduct amounts paid or payable to superintendents, maintenance personnel, and others you employ to take care of your rental property. You cannot deduct the value of your own services. Travel: You might travel to collect rents, supervise repairs, and manage your properties. To claim the expenses you incur, you need to meet the same requirements discussed in Motor vehicle expenses. Travelling expenses include the cost of getting to your rental property. Travelling expenses do not include board and lodging, which we consider to be personal expenses. Utilities: You can deduct expenses for utilities, such as gas, oil, electricity, water, and cable, if your rental arrangement specifies that you pay for the utilities.
