Little Gem s Volume 5 Issue 1 January 2012 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE General Meeting: Second Tuesday of the month Katherine Heidenreich Senior Center 1776 Airway Ave., Kingman, AZ 86401 General Meeting 7:00 PM FRED BUNGE, President January brings us into the New Year. We wish our successors well and will be there to assist them in their transition. Your new officers for 2012 are: Bill Buck, President; Clarkie Segreaves, Vice-President and Brian Murphy, Secretary. There is a need for a Treasurer. Our annual Gem and Mineral Show will soon be upon us and it takes a lot of work. Gary Gann will chair the raffle prize committee. He would certainly appreciate your help. It appears we have crews for security, set-up and take-down. Over 60 vendors have been contacted and at least 15 have paid their fees thus far. It looks like another terrific show will be presented in Kingman. For those of you who may not know this is our 42 nd Annual Gem & Mineral Show. Members are requested to help supply the following for door prizes and the silent auction table: Slabs, tumbled rocks and small prizes for the kid s booth. The Mohave County Gemstoners presents Our 42 nd Annual Rock & Gem Show! We are gearing up for a great show and a great time. This year s mission: to outshine last year, this will take a lot of cooperation and communication. If you are entertaining ideas that you think will benefit the show, do not hesitate to share. Also, if you know a sure fire ways to keep the snow from falling that weekend feel free to work some magic! The Mohave County Gemstoners Club is a member of the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies (RMFMS) and associated with the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS). The purpose of the Mohave County Gemstoners is to: 1. Stimulate interest in Mineralogy and Lapidary Arts. 1

2. Stimulate individual s interest in cutting and displaying of minerals, fossils and gemstones. 3. Stimulate interest in stonecutting, carving and setting of fine gems and jewelry. 4. Stimulate interest in other areas, such as faceting, jewelry design, jewelry fabrication and metalsmithing of jewelry. Fiscal year for memberships runs from January 1st thru December 31st. Dues are $15.00 per person, $20.00 per couple and $25.00 for family. Junior Membership cost is $8.00. Name badges are required, Either Pin or Magnetic style available at cost. Little Gems is published monthly. It is available online at www.gemstoners.org The Newsletter is in PDF format so it will be necessary to download Adobe Reader (free program) to view. The flag salute was led by the Vice President. Previous Meeting Minutes: Were approved as printed in the Little Gems Newsletter. Treasurer s Report: The Club is in very good financial shape. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Membership We welcomed one visitor to our meeting. We also celebrated those with anniversaries and birthdays this month. We now have 78 members. Show Meeting 13 DEC at the Library in conjunction with wire wrapping & beading class.at 2-4 PM. Field Trip The Secret Pass, Don Nelson s Fire Agate claim and Thanksgiving In The Desert III were extremely good. Always check our web site for details on our trips. A trip meeting will be held in Jan. Web Master Visit the site several times each month as information may have changed since the newsletter was published. Editor Need an Editor. Refreshments Next month we will need cookies. OLD BUSINESS: 1. Trailer work party we need to modify the new trailer and get rid of the old one. NEW BUSINESS: 2

January Birthstone January s birthstone is as dramatic and bold in color as the importance of the month itself. No matter how the previous year has treated you, you are suddenly in control of things again. A new chance to be the pilot of your future. The Garnet has long been the stone believed to protect travelers no matter what their journey. A gift of Garnet to a loved one was believed to ensure safe travel and a speedy homecoming. The first Garnets were mined in Sri Lanka over 2500 years ago. Now it is mined in Africa, Australia, India, Russia, South America, and the United States in Arizona and Idaho. FIELD TRIP INFORMATION Sign in 15 minutes before departure time. Leader will state relevant information after everyone has signed in. Each vehicle is to keep the one behind it in sight. Stop if vehicle is not visible and report situation on radio channel 5.1. Always notify leader if you are hiking or driving to another site, give your approximate return time, and keep a radio with you and turned on. If leaving and not returning, notify leader. Always take food, water, and first aid kit, full tank of gas. Name badges are required at all Club functions. ***There will be a Trip Meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 24 th at Gary s house, (992 Selma Dr.) at 10 am. Any questions: call Gary at 757-8121.
