Chapter Director s Message Safety: Hi Everyone, It was wonderful to see new folks at the chapter meeting. Little by little folks have been coming and staying. We really would like to see us grow. Below are the goals I gave to G.W.R.R.A. at the Officers Conference in January as part of all the paper work they request from each chapter. Charlie & Debra Porzio Chapter Directors CA-2S CA-2S Goals for 2013 Knowledge: Our 2013 goals will focus on Fun, Safety, and Knowledge as outlined below; Fun: Engage with other chapters and motorcycle group rallies and functions. This would have a twofold effect. First, it would be fun to meet new friends and to support their cause. Second, when we have our own rally/function, the other chapters and groups would show support for us. Continue safe riding practices on all our rides. This would create a feeling of fun and leisure, rather than a feeling of hurry up and get there and back attitude. This would promote our theme of The joy is in the journey and make it a reality. Promote service. A lot of folks have stepped up over the past year into leadership positions. There are many more positions to be taken. Vince and Pam stated at the Officer s Conference, that one of their goals is to have each chapter function on its own (ie. training, education, stores, etc.). Promote more PLP s. Continue to provide our excellent safety talks at our chapter meeting. Get folks more involved with the Levels program. Our educator will continue with great ideas to get folks involved. Continue to get everyone involved in our rides to make an effort to allow for the whole group to enjoy the fun safely. To keep our rides not over 5 mph of the posted speed limit or at least to keep to flow of traffic without causing harm to us or others. Continue offering a variety of training programs by getting in touch with District and setting up classes for us. Several of us have already participated in first aid, C.P.R., A.E.D. and advance rider courses in the past. As long as the chapter has the funds, provide payment for Doc Wong s CPR, AED, and motorcyclist First Aid class. A total of 7 chapter members attended the January Officers Conference. Promote the G.W.R.R.A. policy. The policies set up by G.W.R.R.A. promote Fun, Safety, and Knowledge, while providing a framework for all of its members. Since G.W.R.R.A. is a National organization, riding with another chapter in another state should be the same. Have a new way of communication between officers and members, which we have implemented already by starting a Yahoo Group to disburse Ideas and information. We have implemented a business meeting into our planning meeting once month. Publicity; Continue taking posters that have been downloaded from the G.W.R.R.A. site to Honda dealers and motorcycle shops in the area, along with flyers and calling cards that can be given to Goldwing riders for a free breakfast at our monthly meeting. ACD s Message FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE Those are much more than simple words or cliché. It is what we are all about. At times, we grouse about being under the umbrella of a larger organization whether it is at our work or a social organization. We need to look at the larger picture and see that the organizational guidelines are made for the benefit of all. We may like some rules; others may get under our skin a bit. If I find a situation in an organization that is not fair or for the benefit of the members, I do one of two things. I either help to affect change for the better or I move on to an organization better suited to my needs. At the February meeting, discussion came up about the Hanger On issue. I d like to clarify some terms and help resolve any misinterpretation. In GWRRA, the term also means Phantom Members or Hitchhikers. Please note I am not talking about guests here. I am specifically talking about those who do not want to join, rejoin, or care to contribute to CA2S or GWRRA. Regardless of the term, basically it refers to non dues paying folks who take part and enjoy the benefits of GWRRA and our Chapter without contributing to the organization or CA2S. By contributing, it not only means the $45/55 bucks (single/family) we pay for membership annually, but contributing also means being a committed member to our Chapter and GWRRA. Make no mistake, our Chapter is loaded with committed members, and we are growing. When a short discussion on Hanger s On started the last Chapter meeting, a comment was made GWRRA is all about getting money. Nothing can be further from the truth. GWRRA is all about Fun, Education, and Knowledge. Chapters are a functional unit of GWRRA and a part of the Association that provides the Fun, Safety, and Knowledge as well as the plethora of member benefits to its members. The key here is that Chapters and the activities of Chapters are intended for GWRRA members. It is common for guests to join us at Chapter gatherings and on rides. We are open to letting guests share in the fun so that they can determine if GWRRA is an association that they would like to be a part of. If a guest returns again and again, it demonstrates that they are enjoying the people and activities. Then it is fair to expect them to join GWRRA so that they can continue to participate and garner the benefits. If they do not want to join GWRRA, it is not fair to the paying members to let them continue to participate in the fun and bear none of the responsibility and cost. The resolution of any issue should stand the test Is it fair? Those that want to continue to participate after 3 Chapter Gatherings or events and will not join the Association are essentially mooching off of the rest of us. These individuals are referred to in GWRRA as Phantom Members/Hanger s On and that problem needs to be addressed. This is a challenge of all Chapter Management Teams to welcome visitors/guests, and also prevent continued participation if they don t have any intention to join the Association. Can any of us expect to join any club or organization without paying dues, or can we expect to join a bowling league and not pay the weekly fees? Of course not, so why would we expect to participate in a GWRRA Chapter without being a GWRRA member? The dues are certainly not prohibitive. Let s take a look at what the $45 bucks yearly dues get for us. For the $45 membership fee: We get free tow insurance We get an excellent monthly magazine everyone looks forward to We get the Gold book for travel We get lesser fees for GWRRA events More important we get fellowship and great times from our meetings, Parking Lot Practice (PLP), Workshops, Conventions, etc. the list goes on It is important for everyone to realize that Chapter CA2S provides much more than other chapters do for their members. We have PLPs organized by Rocky, an experienced MSF instructor) and Roger. We also have workshops to allow our members to work on their bikes organized by Charlie, who is an experienced mechanic. These are not offered by every chapter. But, we have the experience and knowledge in our chapter to provide them to you. Bottom line that $45 we give annually for dues to keep our membership active goes along way, and is a pretty good bargain for what we get. GWRRA is not just after those bucks. They are not all about money. Anyone who thinks so is sadly misinformed. GWRRA is after a commitment to the organization and it goals. There is no excuse for someone that wants to participate in CA2S activities not to join GWRRA. Continued on next page CA2S Shark Bytes 4
ACD report continued: So, what about GWRRA as an organization? The immediate goal is to entice our Members to come to a monthly activity with their family. We do this by making our Chapter gatherings FUN! We make it a relaxed place where all members can be comfortable a nd enjoy a good time. That sounds pretty good to me. If you have not read the Officer s Handbook, perhaps you should take some time to do so. It will give you an understanding of what the officers of a Chapter are charged with. On that note, I encourage everyone to look at the OCP (Officer Certification Program) and take an ownership stake in your Chapter and GWRRA. Hey, we don t want to be ACDs forever. In short, here are a couple of notes about your organization and what it stands for. Mission Statement: In part: the Gold Wing Road Riders Association provides an atmosphere for fun, safety, and knowledge to Gold Wing & Valkyrie motorcycle owners. GWRRA Vision: In Part: GWRRA is a family-oriented, non-religious, non-political association comprised of owners of Honda Gold Wing and Valkyrie Motorcycles as well as non-gold Wing owners, our Associate Members. GWRRA provides a culture which fosters Members with shared values, team concepts and camaraderie. This culture also provides its Members with opportunities for personal development and achievement. What admirable statements! I feel privileged to be part of an organization so devoted to its members. I think $45 bucks is a small price to pay for the benefit. Now, back to the issue of Hanger s On /Phantom members, etc. Some of these folks may be previous members who let dues lapse, others may be outsiders who have no interest in the organization but just want to go along for a free ride. Hanger On individuals do not contribute yearly dues. More importantly, they do not contribute to the chapter or its growth. They do not support or participate in our programs. GWRRA strongly discourages Hanger On individuals. GWRRA activities are for GWRRA members. In fact, they charge us Officers with monitoring the problem. There is a process in place to let folks truly interested in our organization to come aboard for a time period to see if GWRRA is a fit for them, and at the same time eliminate the problem of Hanger s On. Under no circumstances should a member of GWRRA/Chapter CA2S ever be displaced by a non member or be put in a position to not enjoy an organization activity or event. That would be just plain wrong! Our members come first in every case. As Officers, we took an oath to follow the policies and guidelines set forth by GWRRA. I m sure all of you feel the same as I do when it comes to taking an oath. If I take an oath I am duty bound and responsible to follow it true to the words I commit to. Please understand that GWRRA/CA2S is not after your $45 bucks as opined by during our last meeting. If you want to be a member of this organization, what we are after is a commitment to participate in GWRRA and Chapter activities. What you get in return is the fun, events, rides, and in general fellowship with other members that have similar interests, typically associated with motorcycling, specifically Gold Wing motorcycling. If a person has no intention of joining with us, we wish them the best in their efforts to find an organization better suited to their needs and interest. Patti s Corner FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE We want to grow the chapter and the only way to do that is for members to have fun participating in our activities. We held our Event Planning Meeting last month. During that meeting, we planned out most of our events throughout 2013. But, planning for our activities shouldn t end, then. It is up to all of us to contribute ideas for fun things to do, whether we rides our motorcycles there or not. I was perusing other chapters activities and saw one that I thought sounded fun a trip to the Charles Schultz Museum in Santa Rose wow to go see Charlie Brown. You might not be able to pry me out of there. Now, there s an idea for an impromptu. Another fun overnight (or two) trip might be to Solvang. Solvang has become a major California tourist attraction, with over one million visitors per year. It was in 1947, following a feature article in the Saturday Evening Post that tourists began to flock to the town. In particular, today's visitors appreciate the Danish windmills, the statues of Hans Christian Andersen and the Little Mermaid, the half-timbered houses, the Danish rural church, the Round Tower as well as Danish music and folk dancing. In addition, several restaurants and pastry shops serve Danish specialties. A replica of a 19thcentury Danish streetcar, the horse-drawn Hønen ("the hen"), takes visitors on sightseeing tours around downtown Solvang. We live in one of the best places in the country for things to do and things to see let s take advantage of that. And, it doesn t always have to be a long drive maybe it s a regular dinner out just for fellowship with our members. The more you participate and the better friends you make in the chapter, the more fun you will have. Let s work towards making Chapter 2S the envy of California with all the fun things we do. Safety Corner, by Rocky Fagundes Are You Proficient? How would you define a proficient motorcyclist? Is it someone that can display impressive speed on the back roads? Someone that can do a long wheelie? Or someone that can throw an 800lb. motorcycle around at parking lot speed with ease? Well, these are all physical abilities necessary to ride, and deserve our admiration for sure. But is that enough to be called a proficient motorcyclist? These skills however cannot prevent a crash. The rest of the equation for a proficient motorcyclist requires mental skills to help minimize risk. So you say you have recently taken an MSF class and do regular parking practices on your own, but there are still a number of close calls out on the roads. Is it the other guys fault? Well, if you find this happening on a regular basis, you might want to ask yourself if your mental skill set is fully developed. What I am saying is, that even though you can carve a corner at top speed but are still not 100% sure of your traction demands, or feel uncomfortable in heavy traffic situations the imbalance between your physical and mental skills could lead to a serious mishap. A balance needs to be stuck between the two skills. Keep your physical sharp, but don t neglect the mental skills that are most important for keeping you safe. The best riders rarely ever need to use their physical skills to save them from a crash because they are always using the SEE strategy to plan ahead, and avoid the chain of events that can come together to create a crash scenario. They learn to predict what other drivers might do. They spot hazards early and take evasive actions. Consider this. Total stopping distance is made of perception, reaction, and braking. Let s take a look at the figures. At 30mph you are traveling 44ft per second. If you perceive the problem in.75 sec and apply the brakes in.25sec you have already gone 44 feet and will need another 35 feet at least to come to a full stop. Get the picture? That s nearly 80 feet before you come to a stop at your best effort. Yes, you could swerve to avoid the hazard, but many riders lack the ability. And, you must resist the urge to brake when swerving due to the traction demands on your tires. So if a car pulls out in front of you, and you only have 2 seconds to react and stop, chances are you will not be able to pull it off. I think you will agree that avoiding the use of super hero skills to avoid disaster with the SEE strategy in the first place is a far better scenario. If you find that close calls are a frequent happening, you might want to consider your state of mind when riding. Alcohol, drugs, (medication) stress, aging, distractions of any kind can all cause mental blocks that prohibit keeping your riding skills at their sharpest. Situational awareness allows a motorcyclist to evaluate their surroundings and constantly changes in their riding environment. One of the best indicators of this distraction, would be finding yourself being surprised by hazards and your delayed reaction time due to this. Over-confidence in your riding ability can also cause complacency. Many experienced riders can fall into this category after years of riding without any close calls a sense of it can never happen to me overtakes them. Confidence is a good thing. But don t ever think you are 100% safe! At the other end of the spectrum is fear. New riders may experience a lack of confidence when merging into traffic, traveling below the speed limit with a death grip on the handlebars. This can be overcome with structured coaching, and riding practice on less traveled roads. Developing a balance between the newly acquired riding skills, and developing mental skills necessary to become proficient as a motorcyclist are all in the mix as you begin your career riding. STATEGIES FOR SURVIAL Remember the SEE technique. Search the environment actively for hazards. Identify and prioritize them. Finally execute a plan to avoid the situation. Ride to be seen at the expected speed limit. Many riders ride through traffic at 15 sometimes 20 mph faster than the flow of traffic. This can cause a motorist to pull out in front of you thinking they have enough time and space. I have a saying that I use in my BRC classes. Slow in, out with a grin. I n fast, you re not gonna last! Using this as a reminder when you find yourself rolling off the gas in a corner, or worse applying brakes can help to get you back to defining your entry speed. The speed that allows throttle roll-on in the turn and the grin on your face that follows that accomplishment. :) Remember your physical skills and mental skills are perishable. Constant practice of what if scenarios, and fine tuning all your riding skills will keep you riding and managing the risks of riding for many more years to come. Have fun and be safe out there! District Director s Message did I mention it s in Vegas? We have already made our reservations and hope to see you there. Christmas In March So much has happened in the last 8 weeks, that I feel like it is December and I am sitting down to write the annual Christmas letter (except that I have never written a Christmas letter and have often wondered if those that do write them really tell the truth about how wonderful their year actually was). Those ponderings aside, CA-1I hosted an absolutely fabulous event in Covina last month to kick off our riding year. The Gold Angels performed again and this year s routine is even more intricate than in previous years. We look forward to the Region Convention in St. George, Utah over the Memorial Day weekend when the Gold Angels will perform yet another special show. At the end of the convention, the results of the Chapter of the Year were announced with the Wolf Pack of CA-2W coming in second place and the CA-1Z Zebras taking top honors. The Zebras will go on to compete against the Region s other District winners and will try to keep the honors in California. As you read this article CA-1C is actually about to hold their annual event. It is amazing to see what a small group of dedicated people can pull off as this is their 3 rd year. When larger chapters complain to me that their chapters lack the resources to do the things we ask of them, I tell them to compare their resources to CA-1C and then get back to me (talk about a conversation stopper). Anyways, kudos to CA-1C for we know you did another great job! CA-1R is holding their annual Rally in the Valley in beautiful Las Vegas on the 15th, and 16th, of this month. Their theme is aviation related and boasts several great travel opportunities as grand prizes. Most importantly, On a disappointing note, I am sad to announce the official closing of chapter CA-1N in Oceanside. For the past several years, their efforts to recruit replacements for their key officers was met with less than enthusiasm and, eventually, everyone that was willing to hold office had already done so. GWRRA appreciates all of the hard work the members of CA-1N have put in over the last 30 years and no one will soon forget all of the good they did with the Toys for Tots program. If not for all of their efforts, there are many southern California children that would have gone without presents on Christmas morning. At the January Officer s Conference in Bakersfield, we announced that this year s California District Convention would be held at the Holiday Inn in Visalia over Labor Day weekend. Rooms start at $89 and the response from those in attendance was very positive. Well, the officers must have done a great job in sharing the news because the hotel has 259 rooms and as of two weeks ago, we were told that there were 146 rooms still available under our contracted rate. By the way, that rate is good for both king rooms as well as rooms with 2 queen beds so if money is tight this year, think about splitting costs with your friends. The hotel is pet friendly and has agreed to waive the $25/night pet fee for us. In addition to the usual goings on, this year s convention is being held at the gateway to King s Canyon National Park (think Mt. Whitney) and to Sequoia National Park (think of a National Park with Sequoia trees). We will supply you with more details as the time grows closer, but based upon previous years pre-registration rate, we are on track for over 500 attendees. There are several other hotels in the area, but if you want to stay where the convention is being held, you might think about making your reservations sooner rather than later. The Ride along Carmel Valley Road a.k.a The Bull Run By Ron Green Saturday, February 9th was our scheduled ride to Carmel via Carmel Valley Road. Nine bikes met at the Four Points Hotel in South San Jose and departed at 9:00 a.m. (Pet, Sal & Patti, Charlie & Debbi, Doug, Danny, two noisy bikes Steve & Paul and Kristi & I) The first part of the ride was down 101 to Salinas where the plan was to stop for a gas/stretch break. The gas station also has a car wash and one of the riders whose name shall remain anonymous, but whose initials are SAL, lined up for a wash. I guess someone gave him grief about the Honda Police coming to repossess a dirty bike. Fortunately, I think Patti was able to talk him out of it. This part of the trip was pretty relaxed except for the last quarter mile before exiting the freeway. We were moving over to the far right lane to set up for the exit and as I was passing this road bolder on my left he decided to move to the right without looking or signaling. This driver was obviously a graduate of the Howie, Dewy, & Cheetum School of Driving for Bumpkins and Dilbert s. Fortunately, I was able to use my obstacle avoidance skills honed in the PLP s to squeeze by him without running off the road. I gave him the obligatory look and moved on. Oh well, sh*t happens. After our stop in Salinas, we left the highway for nearly 90 miles of back roads to Carmel Valley. Our route took us on River Road which runs west of 101 past Gonzales, Soledad, and Greenfield before turning west, then north on Carmel Valley Road. The first part of Carmel Valley Road is a bit winding taking us through ranch land and some very scenic country side. As we moseyed along I spotted a black shape to the right and on the wrong side of the fence. As we got closer I could make out two legs and as I started slowing down. That is when Doug came across the CB with Cow. This animal backed down from the embankment and turned toward us. It was then that I realized this was NOT a cow, it was a BULL! Does anyone have a red cape? Wait a minute, I am riding a red bike!! Much to my surprise, the bull wheeled around and began to trot along the side of the road. Doug and I wasted no time squirting by and as a third bike passed the bull pulled out into the middle of the road (without signaling). By then the bull was in third gear and moving right along with the rest of the group following, which turned out to be a BIG mistake. The bull commenced with the spewing of chunks using his tail to get an even spread. Did I say sh*t happens? Meanwhile, the three of us are up the road a ways and moving along at slow speed wondering what was happening. The rest of the group was eventually able to pass the bull with great care and we all formed up. It was believed that the bull was frightened and chose the flight over fight option good choice. I have a different theory. As several of us were leathered up, I believe the bull picked up the scent of some of his relatives and just wanted to get as far away as possible. In the past whenever we have gone to Carmel Valley, we stop at the Running Iron restaurant for lunch. I decided to break with tradition and risk a moving violation by passing by the Running Iron and proceeding several miles down to a most excellent Mexican Restaurant called the Baja Cantina & Gill. The cantina has a very good selection to choose from and everyone enjoyed lunch. After lunch and a gas stop, we back tracked to Laureles Grade Road, which allowed us to avoid Hwy 1 and any traffic backup due to the Pro-AM golf tournament at Pebble Beach. Our final stop was in San Juan Bautista for an ice cream break on the chapter. Then it was off for the remainder of the ride home. Hopefully future rides down Carmel Valley Road, will forever be known as THE BULL RUN. CA2S Shark Bytes 14

BVR@att.net Recall: 21,600 Honda Goldwing motorcycles for aftermarket Kuryakyn floorboards Dec 20, 2011 9:45 AM The National Highway traffic Safety Administration has issued a safety recall alert for 21,600 Honda Goldwing motorcycles. Aftermarket floorboards made by Kuryakyn may crack and break off from the Honda motorbikes, possibly injuring riders or cause collisions. NHTSA says the issue affects Kuryakyn floorboards, part number 607005, that were sold and installed on 20012011 Honda Goldwing motorcycles. Kuryakyn is expected to begin notifying owners affected by this recall in January and will provide replacement mounting kits for free, For more information, consumers can call Kuryakyn (715-247-5008) or visit the NHTSA website: www.safercar.gov.
