The Bulletin Chapter E, Stones River Wings Gold Wing Road Riders Association October 2016 Volume 1, Issue 9 Smyrna, Tennessee Can you believe how time flies when you are having fun? We are into our tenth month as a chapter and the activities just keep getting better, some of those activities you will read about in articles submitted by our members for this edition of Chapter E s Newsletter. Speaking of Members; we have the greatest, always there ready and willing to contribute to the growth and success of their Chapter and to participate in every function of Chapter Directors the Chapter, from education classes to visits to sister chapters and everything between. The Members not only support the Chapter, they are the Chapter, everything we do as an association is and should be geared to serve them. We would like to extend a big Chapter E welcome to our newest member, Eddie Jones, we know she will enjoy being a member of Chapter E and we are happy she joined us. In the past month Chapter E has conducted a planning meeting with sixteen members in attendance, held our monthly meeting September 10th at Shoney s in Smyrna attended by twenty members and sixteen guests. On September 17-18th ten members participated in the Wings Across Tennessee ride to St Jude Children s Research Hospital in Memphis to deliver donations collected over the past year, you will read more about that ride in a separate article. On September 24th we made a visit to Chapter H in Franklin, after the meeting Murray led the group to Linden, Tennessee to enjoy the WWII Re-Enactment (see story in a separate article). Eleven members enjoyed a week of camping at Defeated Creek Campground September 23-30 and a few had a day of playing golf on Wednesday of that week, such an enjoyable time. It appears that Fall is almost here and as always the riding should get better and Fall activities will be here before we know it, October 1st Mac and Charlie Huffman will conduct a Medic First Aid Class at Sloan s classroom, October 8th is the date for our Chapter meeting at Shoney s in Smyrna. Don t forget the Ride to Miss Patti s in Grand Rivers, KY on October 15th for dinner and the show at the Badgett Theater. On Tuesday, October 18th dinner and fun in the park at pavilion one Lee Victory Park in Smyrna, bring your dinner and enjoy an evening of horseshoe pitching and playing Pass the Trash. On Tuesday, November 1st our monthly planning meeting and a Motorist Awareness Class at Shoney s in Smyrna and The Veteran s Day Parade in Clarksville, TN November 4-5th. This is just a few of the many activities that we will have the opportunity to participate in, so get those bikes ready for action. Congratulations to Wesley and Cindy Neal on their appointment to Directors of Chapter Y in Murfreesboro, I know they will do a good job in leading their Chapter. We look forward to working with them and supporting all the Chapters in our District. Page 2 Early Fall Mornings Fall is a great time of year as it brings warm days and cool crisp nights. What can develop with these conditions? FOG! The thick cloud of tiny water droplets that can obscure visibility can be beautiful and very dangerous to see thru making the early morning commute to work much more of a challenge. We can use fog lights if you have them to help be Tim and Carol Moore seen but as I was thinking about being seen what about THE E MAC s being heard? Most Goldwing s do not have the loud un-baffled exhaust pipes that chopper have. You know the ones that everyone stops and looks when they roll by but we do have very good radios that can play loudly over the external speakers so use them. Rolling early in the dark or fog play music or talk radio to help folks look and get where is that coming from. At a red light waiting to go play your radio to help get folks to notice that there is a motorcycle here. Be Seen Be Heard Be Safe. Page 3 Chapter E at a WWII Reenactment It was a warm and sunny day when Chapter E members, Ed & Mary Ann, Randy & Deloris, Murray, Mac and Jeff made the ride to Franklin to attend the monthly gathering of Chapter H. The meeting was well attended and we missed out on the Traveling Plaque again which Chapter Z won. Oh well, we ll get it next time. Our ride was just beginning though as Randy, Deloris, Mac, Jeff and myself continued on to Linden, Tn. to attend and enjoy the WWII reenactment staged by the town. The town of Linden goes all out to celebrate the Heroes of WWII who fought in Europe to defeat the dreaded NAZI s. There were quite a few WWII Veterans in attendance who talked to us and gave speeches of their unique experiences in the war. The town then celebrated them by having a parade in their honor. I know that I was proud to applaud them as they road by in half-tracks and personnel carriers. The town also simulated a French Village in 1945 that was occupied by German Forces who were suppressing the local citizens. The locals were attired in period garb and the German forces were also in authentic uniforms, used actual German military equipment and actually spoke in German while the battle was going on. We were also able to walk through the American and German Encampments and view all the vintage WWII equipment and talk to the reenactors. We learned that they provide their own equipment and uniforms and travel all over the US to attend other WWII reenactments at there own expense. The battle began with the dreaded NAZI SS about to hang a local Partisan for sabotage when the American Army, also dressed in authentic uniforms using actual American equipment, arrived to save the day. When the battle started, a Panzer Tank rumbled down the street firing it s cannon at the Americans but it was soon disabled. The battle went back and forth for a while with lots of gunfire, smoke and general mayhem. The Americans finally won the day when the Swastika flag was removed from the courthouse and the audience cheered and applauded the victory. It was quite a spectacle for anyone interested in American History and much enjoyed by all of us who attended. The ride and company were also enjoyable and hopefully we can make the ride again next year. Murray Jeff, Randy, Murray & Mac Mac and Murray are ready to fire some rounds off. Page 4 Hello Everyone, We recently went on a trip to Mt. Magazine in the Ozark Mountains on Highway 309 south of Paris Arkansas. It all started with the St. Jude s ride and a visit to Miss Eddie s sister who lives in Y-City Arkansas. She hadn't seen her sister for quite some time. We arrived in Y-City Sunday. After a good nights rest Brenda and I were ready to start our trip on the bike. Our first goal was Mt. Magazine, after reading about it in the Wing World Magazine we wanted to check it out. We rode our bike to the highest mountain in Arkansas which is 2,753 feet above sea level. It was a beautiful Johnny Victory/Brenda Lane ride with winding roads and majestic views. We made a stop at the welcome Membership Enhancement center and picked up some souvenirs. Then on to the top were we found the Program Coordinators lodge and an overlook that was awesome. You could see for miles and 615-653-0961 miles. A great picture taking opportunity and then we headed down to highway 23 to pick up the Pig Tail. It definitely lives up to its name with the turns that make your tires squeal. Our first night ended in Fort Smith with dinner at the Red Neck Hideout, which had great food. The next day we headed over to Oklahoma and up thru the Sequoyah Mountains to the Cherokee Heritage Museum. There we learned a lot about the way they lived and their journey on the Trail of Tears. We saw games they still play today, that were once used to make decisions and peace between the tribes. We saw how they made their bow and arrows, and their winter and summer homes. We heard stories told by real Indians. Then we headed down to Muskogee for the night and enjoyed a great meal with all you can eat ribs at the famous Rib Crib. The food was great and our bellies were going boom because we ate so much. The next morning, after breakfast, we went to the Five Civilized Tribes Museum where we saw some fantastic art work and crafts totally made by Indians. The day went down hill from there as Johnny came down with food poisoning which was no fun, so we headed to our motel 60 miles away in McAlester. By the next day we were back on track and headed out to the Robbers Cave State Park in the Sans Bois Mountain, where the Jame s Gang hid out along with other outlaws. Once there Brenda was brave enough to crawl through some tight spots and down into the cave. We took the scenic drive thru the Winding Stair Mountain and up through the Ouachita National Forrest back to Y- City. All and all it was a great trip about 1600 miles, which is more than either of us have ever roden. We made a lot of new friends and some great memories. Heart disease is the number 1 killer of men and women. But when women have a heart attack, they tend to be about 10 years older than men. Women are more likely to have other conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure - making it more vital that they get proper treatment fast. Unfortunately, women are less likely than men to believe they re having a heart attack and more likely to delay seeking emergency treatment. As with men, the most common heart attack symptom for women is chest pain or discomfort. But women are more likely than men to experience some of the other symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, or back or jaw pain. (Source: 2016 American Heart Association) COUPLE OF THE YEAR PROGRAM: With only ten months of existence as a Chapter, Chapter E has no official Chapter Couple of the Year, however it is our sincere pleasure to support the Couple of the Year Program. We have among our participants three former Chapter Couples, two former Tennessee District Couples and two former Region N Couples of the Year. It is our pleasure to embrace the Couple of the Year Program in it s entirety and consistently recognize those visiting Couples of the Year from our sister Chapters who may participate at any of our Chapter activities and events. FALL SAFETY TIP: As the leaves begin to fall, be especially watchful of wet leaves on the pavement, as you re trying to come to a stop on your motorcycle.

Before anyone can be successful in selling GWRRA, they must first sit for a moment and determine the reason they joined. Each of us had our own reasons it may have been the emphasis on keeping each other safe when riding, the 'G-rated' family atmosphere of our events or that we know the best places for food and desserts. In most cases the motorcycles brought us together and its the relationships and ideals of GWRRA that keep us together. Page 8 ANNUAL WINGS ACROSS TENNESSEE EVENT Early in the morning on September 17th, our group, along with a few participants from Chapter TN-Y departed Murfreesboro, enroute to Dickson, TN to rendezvous with other Tennessee Chapters participating in the Wings Across Tennessee ride to St Judes Children s Research Hospital, and to present our Chapter s donation for 2016. The weather was ominous, but dry as we departed, however as we neared Dickson mother nature blessed us with some of that liquid sunshine, and persisted to rain on our parade for most of the trip to Memphis. In Dickson we met up with the main group, many who had departed their homes in East Tennessee the day before and spent the night at a local motel in Dickson. Although damp, it was Our ride group, consisted of 10 motorcycles, two four wheel vehicles, and 15 participants Wet & Wild in Dickson still a good ride, with a great cause. Once again the Memphis Police Department met us at the city limits and we were escorted briskly to the hospital. At St Judes we were met enthusiastically by the hospital staff, parked near the event site and fed a complimentary BBQ luncheon. After the luncheon each of the Chapters presented their donations and Liza Leatherman, an ALSAC employee, who had received treatment from St Judes, made a short presentation, highlighting her own experience with the hospital and their commitment to research a cure and provide treatment of devastating children s diseases. We were proud to present our 2016 donation of $9000.00 to the hospital (a joint effort of chapter participants, VI-Jon Corporation, and numerous restaurants in the Smyrna/ Murfreesboro area). Total donation this year for the Wings Across Tennessee Event was $99,491.36, which brings our total since the ride was incepted 21 years ago to $1,802,714.70. Since initiated, the Cruise-In events (motorcycles and autos) has raised over 6.2 million dollars for St Judes. Next years Wings Across Liza Leatherman Tennessee ride will be conducted on September 8 and 9. After departing St Judes, and checking in at the hotel in West Memphis, the Chapter E group headed over to Colton s Restaurant & Steak House for some camaraderie and a super meal. On Sunday we traveled home on a southerly, secondary roadway route, which led us to the Pickwick State Park Restaurant and home. The trip home was without precipitation! Thanks to Randy once again for planning a good route home and to the participants of Chapter E for their diligence in our fund raising effort to support St Judes Children s Research Hospital. September Camping Outing Page 10 As fall arrives and the weather quickly begins to cool in the evenings, it s still a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. In the waning days of September we once again found a large group of camping enthusiasts from Chapter E enjoying the surroundings of Defeated Creek Corps of Engineers Campground, on Cordell Hull Lake. We have a number of relatively new RV ers over the past year, and it s been refreshing to see their knowledge and independence as campers, grow with each new outing. This event included Mac & Janice, Randy & Delores, Jeff & Geraldine, Murray, Dennis & Marty, Walter & Barbara, Barry & Connie, Ed & Mary Ann, and Robby & Lynda Roberts, plus two guests. The mornings were crisp, but the days are now comfortable. A few of the men ventured off to White Plains Golf Course on one day, to enjoy a round of golf. Others just hung out at the campsite, enjoying the facility and each others company. Every evening included a campfire... even on the night that it rained. Five of us watched the campfire dwindle (from under an awning), as mother nature worked hard to drown out the flames. One evening we made s mores and another evening we roasted some hotdogs. It s easy to see why the Defeated Creek facility is our favorite camping location. The leaves haven t really begun to turn yet, however it won t be long. Hopefully, our fall color ride will reveal some enjoyable fall colors. There is talk of possibly one more camping event before the cold weather sets in, however many are quite busy during the next couple of months, and we already have several Chapter activities planned. Stay tuned for one more camping event before the end of the year. In our article last month pertaining to the Annual Chapter Campout, we neglected to post the photo of the RV of Dennis and Marty Wolfe, who have been active and attended most of our camping events. Sooo here s their photo, along with our apology for not including it in last month s edition of the The Bulletin. Chapter Medic First Aid Class On Saturday, October 1st, Mac and Charlie Huffman, Chapter Z Director and fellow MFA Instructor, conducted a class on the newly revised Medic First Aid Program, for those wishing to participate and/or desiring to maintain or fulfill some of the requirements for the Rider Education Levels Program. Those completing the course were Jeff & Geraldine, Randy & Delores, Art & Doris, Dennis and Ed & Mary Ann. Janice attended to help Mac and familiarize herself with the new material. For those not attending, the new course includes more first aid and treatment for Mac McGlothlin other various injuries and ACD & MFA Instructor animal bites. The class was conducted in the upstairs conference and training room at Sloan s Motorcycle and ATV Super Center. If you did not attend, and desire to complete the course, please inform me and I ll insure you re scheduled during the next presentation of this material. Be prepared, in case of an emergency! Mac
Motorcycles and Tractor Trailer Trucks Motorcyclist and Professional Truck Drivers face challenges when on the road together compared to other vehicles. Through education we can reduce fatalities and make our highways safer for everyone. Page 11 1. Never cut in front of a tractor trailer. A loaded truck can weigh 80,000 pounds or more and take more than a football fields length to stop. 2. Don t linger around a truck or you may be in a blind spot where you can t be seen. 3. Look for the driver in the mirror before you begin to pass and make sure you see both of the trucks headlights before pulling back in front. 4. If at all possible never pass on the right side where the blind spot is bigger. 5. When passing as a group always pass in a single file and be aware of the cross winds or turbulence coming off of the truck. 6. When riding behind a truck always leave a 4 second following distance.
