BIRTHDAYS & ANIVERSARIES Happy Birthday Ferdi Kropik 29 th October PRESIDENT S MESSAGE This past week saw many of our club members experience the benefits of our first ever scatter meeting and we certainly did scatter. Rotary clubs visited included as far away as Lakes Entrance where John Ray visited and Berwick where Alister Bennett, John Kinia and Alex Dawia went, where John Kinai gave a short presentation. Other clubs visited that I am aware of to date included Point Gellibrand where several members went including our exchange student Pierre plus other members attended Sunshine, Essendon, Essendon North, West Footscray, Altona City, Altona, Central Melbourne Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Melbourne where I attended. I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to the Rotary Club of Melbourne which was the 1 st Rotary Club in Australia (90 years ago). I was made very welcome there and the feedback I have received from club members reflects a similar experience. We all would have made some new Rotary friends and contacts from this experience which was the objective of this initiative. I would like to commend Chris Woods, Frank Spiteri and John Ray in particular for their efforts with the display we had at the Point Cook Fiesta last week. We were definitely the most tech savvy of the community groups on display with two computer screens simultaneously displaying revolving photos of the club s activities on one screen with the other showing film from Frank s Day of Difference Car Rally. We also had the breathalyser operational which attracted a lot of interest and Franks Rally Car on Display. Chris Woods had our latest promotional brochure available for distribution, which is the best I have ever seen produced by our club. The breathalyser may have even saved a life or serious injury as a couple of people tested over twice the legal limit which made them think twice about driving home. Thanks for all those that participated on this day promoting the club, we have at least one definite prospective member from this day who has been in contact with me since the event. Joanne and I attended an excellent presentation last week on Autism and Asperger s for teachers, parents and carers that was organised by the Rotary Club of Williamstown, with the event held in Newport. The main presentation was by Melbourne based Dr Richard Eisenmajor who is one of the leading clinical psychologists in this area as well as three parents with children with these disorders spoke. This event attracted enormous public interest from people seeking information in this area with over 300 people attending, with many having to be turned away. I believe that our club should consider running a similar sort of event in the Wyndham area some time during 2012 as there is a clear need in the community that would enhance our efforts to meet the needs of our our local community.
Other events recently have included: the AGM of Werribee Plaza Bingo that I attended which was very much a good news story for a change. The club is one of 9 major shareholders in Werribee Plaza Bingo that has been has been our major source of charitable funds since 1985. Over the last couple of years returns have declined markedly. However, over the last few months returns have rebounded, in response to cost cutting and new gaming initiatives. The future of Werribee Plaza Bingo was also looking shaky there for a while. However, they have now signed a new 10 year lease with the Plaza, with new facilities to move into in July 2012 with an expanded seating capacity from 275 to 525. Frank Spiteri and I attended the Cluster Presidents meeting, where Frank presented on the proposed Children s Traffic School Project, which is attracting cluster club interest. Frank will be meeting with the incoming mayor of Hobson s Bay on the 4 th of November to seek his support This week s meeting we are back at Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club. This will be a partner s meeting and we will have a guest speaker from Donations in Kind (DIK). DIK collect second hand goods for shipment to targeted Third World Countries and they have been assisting us collecting and preparing computer equipment for shipment to schools in Mt Hagen in Papua New Guinea. In addition we will be inducting Craig Dowling who is transferring in from his former Rotary Club of Ginninderra in Canberra, which I am really looking forward to. Craig has been a Rotarian since 1991, and is a past president and Paul Harris Fellow recipient. That s all for now. So as per our club theme for the year Together, let s build a better community! Yours in Rotary Chris Egger
