Snowmobile Touring Loops Explore The North Woods On Snowmobile These favorite loop rides highlight the best of The Forks area snowmobiling. Enjoy hundreds of miles of well-groomed trails, with numerous loops that minimize backtracking on the same trail. You ll experience spectacular scenery, wildlife, history, and a varied riding terrain from winding woods trails through majestic forests, to wide-open highway cruising. Moosehead Lake/Moxie Mountain Loop (6-8 hours) This ride takes you up out of the Kennebec River Valley, north on ITS 86 to Moosehead Lake, and returns via ITS 87 past Moxie Mountain. Highlights of the ride include: a trip to the B-52 crash site, where parts of the wreckage of the mammoth plane that slammed into Elephant Mountain in 1963 still remain, a lunchtime stop at a Moosehead Lake restaurant, and an ascent up to the Moxie Mountain Lookout with spectacular views of the Kennebec River Valley and Sugarloaf Mountain. Grand Falls/Coburn Mountain Loop (6-8 hours) This ride travels west of The Forks on ITS 86 to the Dead River and spectacular Grand Falls, then up over Coburn Mountain, Maine s highest elevation groomed trail. Highlights of the ride include: the frozen 35-foot high falls, the high altitude Shutdown Loop, a lunchtime stop at a rustic Maine sporting camp, and boundless views of mountains and lakes.
