He was rescued as a puppy from the State of Georgia, ad by all accouts, ejoyed a great life with his family for his first three years. Sadly, the family was fractured by divorce, ad Max got lost i the shuffle. He has bee stayig at New Hampshire Humae Society sice October. Shelter life is ot optimum for his MAX robust boy. We eed moderates to serve o Couty Delegatio To the Editor: I recetly listeed to the Belkap Couty Delegatio (elected state reps, majority Republica), chaired by Rep. Colette Worsma (R.), the first airig of the Belkap Couty budget. Most of the hour showed differeces of opiio o usig or ot the subcommittee process of the past. Rep. David Huot (D.) supports the subcommittee process, ad whe a motio was made he clarified that the wordig icluded may or may ot iclude subcommittees. This clarificatio was eeded because Chair Worsma, callig for the vote, asserted that it could just iclude o subcommittees. She so clearly wats to haste o to the cuts, that Rep. Ia Raymod (D.) said, We eed to have subcommittee meetigs to give the departmet heads a chace to plead their case before the executioer s axe comes dow o their departmet budgets. I sympathize with our hard workig couty departmet heads, for Worsma, sittig i charge, seems the classic tyrat, a la Alice i Woderlad s awful quee. We did just that i our follow-up story about the Nith Aual Salvatio Army Turkey Pluge which appeared i several Salmo Press ewspapers recetly. We certaily regret our omissio, ad wish to publicly thak two special frieds of the Turkey Pluge for their geerous doatio of food for our post-pluge lucheo. Five years ago, whe Bill ad Sally Bickford opeed their ew restaurat, Kitche Cravigs, I approached them about doatig chowder to our lucheo. The respose was immediate ad ucoditioal whe do you eed the chowder, ad what time will you pick it up? Kitche Cravigs has bee doatig every year sice, ad After all, we are Better Together! To the Editor: Lakes Regio Better Together Steerig Committee wishes to thak the may hads that made our Aual Celebratio such a woderful evet! Lakes Regio Food Network collaborated with us to coordiate may local farmers who doated fresh, local produce ad poultry for a variety of delicious soups for dier. Kare & Tom Barker ad Aaro Lichteberg were the master soup chefs that doated their time ad talet. They created homemade Chicke, Squash Bisque, White Bea & Kale, ad Miestroe Soups. Kevi Halliga doated the use of the kitche at Lacoia Village Bakery ad also provided fresh salad ad rolls for the evet. The farm(ers) who cotributed icluded: Krebs Farm (Saborto), Wiipesaukee Woods Farm (Alto Bay/Gilford), Miglewood Farm (Lacoia), Evadale Farm (Pittsfield), Beas & Grees (Gilford), Big Baaa (Lacoia) ad Shephard s Hut (Gilford). This effort is a fie example of how local commuities ca work together to create healthy food choices from area farmers. This year s celebratio highlighted Stad Up Lacoia, a Better Together actio group. They offered a isightful ad ispirig message o the importace of the issues surroudig drugs ad alcohol i our schools ad our commuities ad what we ca do to make a chage. Cotributios from the New Hampshire Charitable Foudatio (Tym Rourke) ad Lakes Regio Partership for Public Health, were icluded, as well. We are also grateful for Lakes Regio Commuity Services who provided the space for us to share these stories. Additioally, Lakes Regio Child Care Services were very creative with the ceterpieces. Childre Do t let your heritage be stole by short-lived corporatios To the Editor: Speakig i regards to the Hathaway House, I am hopig to help covice the owers of Cafua ad the citizes of Lacoia ot to allow the demolitio of this bit of your heritage. Do t for a momet thik that because there is a lake earby that tourists will seek out your tow ad patroize your busiesses if the soul of your tow has bee lost. Travelers are seekig places that have preserved that feel of a simpler, quieter time. Structures like the Hathaway House exude that feelig. I have watched the Hathaway House, year after year, i articles i your local papers. I ve read about the hopes ad plas for savig the buildig. I ve drive by. I ve bee waitig. I am a summer visitor. I live i Massachusetts, but I am ot from New Eglad. I come from a small tow i New York. My little tow was a spa destiatio for New York City vacatioers back i the early 20th Cetury. Much of my tow s heritage was completely lost i the 1950 s by immiet domai whe the St. Lawrece Seaway was built. The tow was told that we would agai become a tourist s mecca. Pavilios were built overlookig the St. Lawrece River ratig is ow the lowest it s ever bee, after last year s budget cuts. We eed moderate people to serve our couty, sesible represetatives. To serve certaily is a special phrase, ad a importat role requirig good judgmet skills. Rather tha have our couty stuted to the detrimet of our citizery, it could be supported ad thrive, with moderate represetatives at the helm, Democrats or Republicas. Remember what extremism does for damage, ext electio seaso. Sicerely, Ly Rudmi Chog Saborto we appreciate Bill ad Sally s commuity spirit. I busiess loger tha Bill ad Sally, the Beetle Family of Patrick s Pub ad Eatery was my very first call for a food doatio for the first Turkey Pluge ie years ago. Those of you who kow the owers of Patrick s Pub kow them to be deeply ivolved i umerous commuity projects. Agai, the respose was immediate. What do you eed, ad whe? So to these two restaurat families, the Bickford family at Kitche Cravigs ad the Beetle family at Patrick s Pub ad Eatery, the Salvatio Army ad Turkey Pluge Committee exted a most sicere thak you for your ogoig support of the Pluge. My mom always told me to dress i layers whe the cold weather domiated. That s advice I ve take over the years, ad last week was o differet. I stepped out of the car i the Gustock parkig lot with a fried i tow rockig three pairs of socks, thermal uderwear as well as sweatpats ad a sweater uder my jacket ad sow pats. The peak seaso crowds were t coversig o the Gilford hill o a Thursday i mid-december, meaig we had o lies or waits ahead of us. With four lifts ope ad about 15 trails ready to ski, coditios were excellet for the early-seaso jaut. Our morig bega with a quick ru dow Tiger, usually oe of the earlier trails opeed as a lot of the ski racig for the seaso will take place there. After a few more rus o the Ramrod lift, we vetured over to the other mai lift ope for the day i Pistol, where the trek up to the top was met with a healthy dose of sow-makig o the terrai park dow below. It s a sowmakers kida day today, a Gustock employee says as we ready for aother trip up Pistol. That was ideed the case, as the brutally cold coditios were t too bad at times but my exposed face struggled after a couple of hours ad we called it a early day. There ll be plety more days at the moutai, o eed to push the luck i the opeer. We closed the day out at the Powder Keg, chattig with the oly other two people sittig at the bar with the lifts widig dow for the day. It was two older getleme who had bee to the moutai almost every day so far, o doubt ejoyig their retiremet. They laugh at the cold weather, claimig they ve got the perfect remedy for the arctic blast hagig aroud the Lakes Regio. That s what the beer is for, they say holdig up their pits. You ca t let a little cold get i the way of some fu. We re too old for that kid of (expletive). Wise words ideed. Jeff Lajoie covers sports for the Meredith News, Gilford Steamer ad Wiisquam Echo. JUST KIDDING December 19, 2013 B7

B8 December 19, 2013 SPORTS Basketball Cotiued from page B1 set up their pressure defese. We were t able to get ito the tempo that made us successful i the first quarter. A ruer from Tim Harmo (six poits) pulled the Bears withi 58-44 late i the third, but the closest Wiisquam was able to close the gap was whe Jaso Robiso sak a pair of freebies to make it a 67-54 game with 5:59 left i the fourth quarter. Berli aswered with a 10-0 ru to make it 77-54 before Serrao quelled the threat with a 3-ball. Behid Serrao s 28 poits, Pevie ad Torrey Martiez were ext i lie with ie poits apiece for the Bears. Mike Buxto tossed i six poits, as did Harmo ad Sigleto. Luke Morriso (four poits) ad Robiso (two) rouded out the scorers. While the opeig ight loss was tough, it was a good early test for a Wiisquam team that has hopes of beig a coteder this witer i Divisio III. There are positives ad egatives to seeig a team like Berli early, explaied Dame. I love the measurig stick games early but the drawback is we do t get a chace to make adjustmets ad get aother crack at them agai uless we happe to see them i the postseaso.
