what s on Budding Tamworth Youth Jared Scott s Country Music Dream By Sophie Fitzgerald Power FM Powering On! from page 1 While we are always focused on the listeners, it is great to be judged by our peers on our radio craft, he said. Ultimately, it helps us improve our service to those who listen to us on a daily basis. It is nice to get some recognition for this, but our main aim is to be a relevant and important part of the Upper Hunter community. Organised by Commercial Radio Australia, on behalf of the radio industry, the national awards cover thirty four categories which encompasses all areas of commercial radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment. The ACRAs differ from television s Logie Awards in that they are peer judged with judging panels comprised of industry members. RAILWAY HOTEL MUSWELLBROOK Live Entertainment every Sunday from 4.00pm to 8.00pm Food from 5pm Full TAB and Keno facilities Restaurant Lunch Wed - Fri (12pm - 2pm) Dinner Mon - Fri (6pm - 8.30pm) Tamworth local Jared Scott began performing at a young age. Now only 21 years of age, he is already working towards his dream of being a professional country musician. Entering his fi rst talent quest as an introverted 11 year old, he has since grown into quite the accomplished young musician, boasting performances with Troy Cassar-Daley, the NSW Schools Spectacular and Takamine Showcase. Jared graduated from the highly regarded country music school for juniors, Tamworth Camerata College three times; here he was propelled to further his musical talents and pursue his dreams. Following high school, he focused on his career and hopes to be a successful professional country music singer like his idols, Keith Urban and Troy Cassar-Daley. Jared has been working profi ciently across NSW not only as a solo artist, but with his band, Route 67. To see Jared perform his unique style of country, head to Muswellbrook s Railway Hotel on Sunday 25 August at 2.30pm or Scone s Royal Hotel on Friday 30 August at 7.30pm and experience what this talented, young musician has to offer. creative Creative Arts arts Arts Grants Available For Upper Hunter Community Organisations The Country Arts Support Program, or CASP, has assisted a wide range of arts and non-arts groups and organisations with grants of up to $3,000. Art societies, writers groups, craft groups, volunteer museums and festivals can apply. As can neighbourhood centres, disability services, youth services, aged care services, libraries, and council community services. As long as you re incorporated and not for profi t, you can apply. And, if you re not incorporated, you can arrange for someone to auspice your application. It might be obvious why an arts group would apply for an arts grant, but what about a busy, under-resourced service provider? Arts Upper Hunter s Mark Reedman explained. I occasionally walked past a women s health service. One day, on the spur of the moment, I decided to let them know that CASP applications had opened. I rang the bell and a woman greeted me cautiously through a security screen door. As it turned out, much of their work was with victims of domestic violence. I explained that I was a Regional Arts Development Offi cer and wanted to let them know about some small arts grants. I slid my business card under the door and, after some discussion with her colleagues, the woman let me in. I was ushered into an offi ce with two other women and, after brief introductions, did my spiel about CASP. There was no response but I could see their minds ticking over. They d clearly never considered an arts project before, which was understandable given the demands of their work. I thought I d leave them to it and started to make a polite exit when one of the women, with a slightly worried look on her face, asked if they could apply to run a women s choir project for clients and staff. And that s how it started. With some help, they wrote a successful application, hired a women s choir leader of national standing and ran workshops leading to a public performance by some thirty women. I remember the day they proudly gave me a copy of their CD. There were lots of obvious and not so obvious benefi ts to the project but, if I had to name one that would be it: pride. CASP closes on Tuesday October 1. Information for applicants and online applications can be found at www.regionalartsnsw.com.au Arts Upper Hunter is happy to assist with developing project ideas, sourcing artists and reading draft applications. Not all applicants will need this help, but all applicants must discuss their application with us before lodgement. Regional Arts Development Offi cer Mark Reedman can be contacted on 0409 382 509. creative arts Arts School to Regional Art Gallery Over Time By Sophie Fitzgerald Whether you fi nd yourself viewing the exhibitions at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre, or remember the days when the Bridge Street corner was occupied by the town hall, the building has long history, dating back to its original construction in 1871. The School of Arts provided the community with many facilities that allowed citizens to learn after leaving school, something that was lacking prior to the introduction of public libraries and TAFE colleges. They implanted libraries where lectures and recitals were held, reading rooms and assembly halls throughout and in 1872 constructed an extension to be used as the Muswellbrook Municipal Council offi ces which were later relocated to Simpson Park in 1937. This extension was also home over the years to many organisations including the Muswellbrook Coursing Club, Muswellbrook Coal Company and Hunter Broadcasters before the additional building was demolished in 1999. The School of Arts also hosted dancing lessons found very popular following the second war as well as balls, moving pictures, dances, card nights and many competitions amongst men in the billiard room. The school was offi cially purchased and ceased operations in 1950 as it was handed over to the Muswellbrook Municipal Council and fl agged town hall which underwent renovations during its early years to house the Muswellbrook District Library. The hall staged many events such as public meetings, eisteddfods, auctions and ensembles. Additions were made over the years including a fundraising shop to the fast-growing library until 1979 when it was moved to new premises. Art began to thrive following the success of the Art Prize that still takes place today. Following the construction of a new gallery in 1970 used to exhibit a program of travelling and local collections, a mezzanine was needed in order to harbour the rapidly growing collection belonging to the organisation. It was in 1998 that the council announced their plans to remove all extensions and return the School of Arts building to its original glory which two years later was offi cially premiered as the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre; allowing not only for the display of the well known Max Watters Collection, but state of the art storage for their own collection as well as presenting many touring exhibitions. The building after extensions, refurbishment and alterations is today in its prime and one of the most beautiful historical buildings in town presenting some of the fi nest artworks in Australia - its story goes untold to many of the residents of Muswellbrook. equine trend & more Rescue Helicopter Receives a Boost from Miners On the same day that the NSW Minerals Council united with the Newcastle Knights to honour the role of more than 16,000 local miners, the community s own Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service celebrated a new partnership with one of the region s largest coal mines. Exciting Times for the Thoroughbred Industry By Laura Sykes Already well known on the national and international scene, the local thoroughbred industry is set to see exciting times. Not only is locally-based Husisname making headlines as one of the most well travelled bush horses in NSW, but several studs in the area are set to play host to a number of big name stallions later in the year among them Kentucky Derby winners. Mt Arthur Coal employees and their families joined the Rescue Helicopter team to unveil the newest logo on the aircraft before it fl ew into Hunter Stadium as part of a miners appreciation day organised by the NSW Minerals Council. Mt Arthur Coal employees donated $195,000 between July 2012 and June 2013 to the Rescue Helicopter through payroll deductions. Their generosity was then matched dollar for dollar by BHP Billiton through its Matched Giving Program. Rescue Helicopter Service General Manager, Richard Jones, said that miners of the region were a valued and long-standing part of the service s community. We are very humbled by the support of miners at Mt Arthur Coal, Mr Jones said. Since the Service was established in 1975, miners of this region have contributed generously through their pays. Many of the companies they work for now also match miners donations dollar for dollar, as was the case with BHP Billiton Mt Arthur Coal. This sector contributes enormously to the region s Rescue Helicopter and we are most grateful for their ongoing contribution, Mr Jones said. Since 2009, BHP Billiton and its employees have proudly invested more than $1 million in this service which is critical to so many, he said. The mining industry in particular recognises the need for the proper tools and skills in an emergency situation and the service provides both, Mr Sharpe said. Mining companies employees were offered free passes to the Newcastle Knights game and encouraged to wear their high visibility shirts to stand out in the crowd. Image: Mt Arthur Coal employees and their families celebrate the new Logo Rights Partnership at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service base in Broadmeadow before the Voice for Mining Day at Hunter Stadium Husisname, bred at Arrowfi eld Stud by the imported superstar Hussonet, has only won six out of 86 starts, but when he wins he does so by a clear margin. Bought for only $3500 at a Scone sale in 2007 by Branxton based trainer Noel Boland, the 8 year old gelding has recorded wins by 5.3, 4.5 and 2.0 lengths. Two of these have been at the historic Louth Cup, for which Husisname had to travel nearly 1000 kilometres each way to the tiny village on the Darling River in far western NSW, which makes Husisname undisputedly one of the most well-travelled horses from a regional area in NSW. This year Arrowfi eld Stud and others including Coolmore, Darley and Vinery, will play host to three of the most well-known Kentucky Derby winners in recent times as part of the southern hemisphere shuttle season. Shuttle stallions play a huge part in the breeding industry as a way of diversifying each years foals with the very best genetics from not just Australia, but all over the world. The big names that have everybody talking this season are Animal Kingdom, available for a fee of $38,500 and hosted at Arrowfi eld, Big Brown who will be held at Vinery Stud for a princely sum of $22,000 and Street Sense, who heads to Darley with his sire Street Cry, with fees of $16, 500 and $110,000 respectively. If these prices seem a lot to pay, remember that Street Sense, the only horse ever to win the Kentucky Derby Double, had pulled in a massive $4.3 million from just thirteen starts for six wins, while Animal Kingdom previously earned over US$8.3 million from only eleven outings, as well as winning the world s richest race, the Dubai World Cup, by two lengths earlier this year. These host studs, among others in the area, will be conducting open days from August 22-26, and these and many other champion stallions from the best international bloodlines will be available for public viewing. Reservations are required, so if you d like to book in get in touch with each stud to fi nd out more. Others holding open days to showcase their latest offerings include Widden, Patinack, Yarraman Park, Turangga Farm and Newgate Farm. Whether you re looking for a stallion to breed to or are just interested in the magnifi cent thoroughbred horse, make a reservation and enjoy the mouthwatering experience the 2013 season has to offer. Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. We think that just about covers it! community focus Brownlee Family Celebrates Five Years at the Belmore! Once labelled as the old pink pub or The Hellmore, the Belmore Hotel s conversion to a family-friendly, traditional casual dining and acoustic entertainment venue has now seen fi ve years of ownership celebrated by the Brownlee family this month with a scheduled fancy dress pirate party, this Saturday 24 August to mark the occasion. The Belmore dates back to 1866 when it was built by Matthew Miller. Then known as the Railway Inn, the Belmore has since made a reputation for itself as one of the best venues in the Upper Hunter thanks to the family team of Frank and Robyne Brownlee and their sons, Kal and Hammond along with daughter, Makala who all play an integral role in the business. After being renamed in honour of the Earl of Belmore, who fi ttingly opened the railway line in Scone in 1871, the hotel has undergone several facelifts over the years to get it to the picturesque two storey building that it is today. The Brownlee family took over the Belmore in 2008 and have since then made it their mission to create a fun and relaxing atmosphere where families and friends can get together and enjoy the company and surrounds. Extensive renovations have taken place to produce a sophisticated exterior. The renovations are an ongoing project with big changes planned at the back of the hotel, stated Kal Brownlee. We have added another dimension with the new Flexicast TAB system which is now up and running. added Kal. The Belmore has also been recognised professionally, having been previously awarded the Single Schooner Award from the Good Pub Food Guide. Chef Rahmie brings his passion and commitment to good food to offer up some great and inspirational dishes from all nations of the culinary world with the recent Pepperjack s tomahawk steak dinner hailed as a huge success and plans now underway for a sequel. The Brownlee family is just as committed to community as it is to being a great pub supporting local sporting events - including rugby union, hockey, basketball, touch football and netball as well as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Rescue Service, Scone Grammar School and Scone Public School. They are also major sponsors of the Pink Stumps Day fundraiser. leisure & lifestyle Image: Arti Trasi courtesy of Roger Skinner Community Syndicate - Arti Trasi By Sophie Fitzgerald Well known through her meditation programs and talk shows on ABC Radio and 98.1 FM, Arti Trasi has been working extensively throughout Australia and overseas whether it is conducting workshops or tutoring students, she is an asset to Muswellbrook s community. Science and maths graduate as well as a traditional Indian dancer, she has been involved in theatre and drama for many years and has combined these achievements and applied them in every which way she could. I like to reach out to people and integrate them into the community. Arti explained. She operates her Mindfulness Meditation programs at the QE11 Community Centre, focusing on the physical and mental wellbeing of those who attend through meditation, spiritual dance and various other activities that work to put anxiety, stress and pain at ease. I feel I am doing my bit by conducting the Mindfulness Meditation sessions, teaching stress reduction techniques and holistic living especially during times of stress and turmoil. And as if she hasn t enough on her plate, she uses time management to be able to coach school students for numeracy and literacy programs; pursues the roll of newsletter editor for the Upper Hunter Community Centre where she works to integrate people and bring a harmonious relationship via multicultural cooking demonstrations. If you want to fi nd time, you will. So in my spare time, I spend quality time travelling with my family and experimenting with cooking. Recently nominated for Citizen of the Year by the Muswellbrook Council, she is also on the committee for the NSW Rural Doctors Network family networking program - HUGS which focuses on mentoring for new families that come to Muswellbrook by helping them settle in. And last but not least on her impressive list of community involvement, a new project called Harmony Day which unites citizens from various cultural backgrounds together to share their stories, cultures and traditions. People often come back and tell me that they feel they are better people; that they are more focused; some say that they now have the will to live; some say that they have a new lease on life; some say that they feel more motivated or now living for the moment. Arti explained. Her work is much appreciated, especially to those who have attended her workshops or even associated with her in the smallest way. She has done wonders for the local community and it is a credit to her for the hard work she commits herself to. For any enquires regarding stress reduction, holistic living and Mindfulness Meditation, be sure to contact Arti on 0449 035 535.
