Sections: } Lesson 3: Egypt s Empire

Lesson 3: Egypt s Empire } A Golden Age a time of wealth } Middle Kingdom (2055 B.C. 1650 B.C.) } Egypt conquered new lands to the south and west (see the map on the last slide) } Arts flourished (tomb paintings, sculptures) } Pharaohs were buried in tombs in the Valley of the Kings (no more pyramids are built)

Lesson 3: Egypt s Empire } New Kingdom: Bigger and better } Founded by Ahmose } Hatshepsut was a woman pharaoh } She was not supposed to rule, was supposed to run the country until Thutmose III was old enough to take over } She focused on trade and diplomacy by sending envoys to other countries } She appeared in men s clothing and the false beard worn by the pharaohs to make her look more like other pharaohs } She refused to hand over the throne and instead ruled Egypt for more than twenty years I ve got this. I ll let you know when I m done.

Lesson 3: Egypt s Empire } Thutmose III } Waited more than twenty years to become pharaoh } Once he became pharaoh he led the army on a rampage I just can t wait to be king! } Conquered more land than ever before } Expanded Egypt s empire far south (Nubia, Kush) and North into the Middle East (Jordan, Israel, Syria) } Brought home lots of gold, copper, ivory and slaves as war loot.

Lesson 3: Egypt s Empire } Tutankhaten = Tutankhamun (Like father like son: He too changed many things, even his name!) } He became pharaoh after the death of Akhenaton You can call me Tut } He quickly undid Akhenaton s changes } restored the old polytheistic religion } moved the capital back to Thebes } Restored the old art style } He died at the age of nineteen } His tomb was discovered in the 1920 s with all its treasures still inside!

Lesson 3: Egypt s Empire } Ramses II (1279 B.C. 1213 B.C.) } Ruled for 66 years! } Expanded the empire to its biggest size. } Fought the Hittites in the largest chariot battle in ancient history! } After his death Egypt began a gradual decline until they were conquered by the Assyrians (remember them?) in 670 B.C.

Review Questions 1. How was Hatshepsut able to become Pharaoh? 2. How was Akhenaton different from other Pharaohs? 3. Why is King Tut the most famous Pharaoh? 4. What are some differences (at least 3) between the Old and Middle/New Kingdoms?
