We had to set up an extra table in our enclosed porch area to accommodate the overflow crowd. The program, coordinated by Jim Valenti and Ed Olsen, led us through John s remarkable history from World War II heroics as a torpedo bomber tail gunner, to securing the land from the state where our SPVCA center is located. On the lighter side, Ron Horst told the tale of John s hole-in-one at a charity event that won him a trip to Las Vegas. According to Ron, the ball flew into the hole on the fly! Talk about accuracy! When John had his turn to speak, ever the gentleman, he shared the credit for his accomplishments with others. John also revealed surprising details on the negative treatment he received from those who opposed him, particularly in his successful effort to increase our local beach safety by prohibiting vehicular traffic. At the conclusion of the program, Ed and Jim presented John and his wife Angela with a gift as a token of appreciation for service to our community. On Saturday March 22nd Casino Night returned to the SPVCA center. Black Jack, Roulette, Craps, and Horse Racing all gathered a crowd with every person holding $1000 real (looking) dollars to spend. Prizes were given to the top three winners with Mike Preusser taking first place. Prior to the gambling, bocce ball, horseshoes, and bag toss competitions were held in our outdoor activity area. Bob Frohardt was the bocce ball champ and Marge Herklotz took top honors in the bag toss. The whole evening was great fun and well-deserved thanks go to our hard working Social and Recreation committees. If you missed the good time, do yourself a favor and make a point to be with us at our next event. Trivia Night returns on the April 11th Second Friday Social, where what you know can win a prize for your entire team (table). Look out for the new 2014 South Ponte Vedra Civic Association Member Directory as it makes its way to you. Be sure to support our many Directory sponsors by using their products and services. URGENT MEETING OF SPV-VILANO BEACH PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION Saturday, April 19, at 9 a.m. SPVCA building 2724 South Ponte Vedra Blvd. During March, our area was once again affected by severe erosion, with devastating damage to several properties in the 2800 block, as well as continued erosion impacting dunes, walkovers, and properties in other stretches of the beach. You may have seen the TV news coverage or viewed the affected properties. Previously, we announced that at our next Association meeting on April 19 we intended to inform everyone about the details of the updated St Augustine Inlet Management Plan. Given the recent erosion, it is especially important that everyone understand the impact of that Plan. Some of its adopted strategies are most beneficial to our interests, including significantly smaller annual Inlet dredging limits ( bypassing objectives ) and the placement of one-third of the dredged material to our critically eroded beaches to the north of the Inlet. After its adoption by DEP in January, we learned that the St Augustine Port, Waterway, and Beach District, which, with the Army Corps is responsible for the maintenance dredging, had requested a time extension for filing a petition. We are relieved to report the petition was not filed and so the Plan has gone into effect. Now that the conditions of our beach have worsened considerably, not only is the adoption of that Plan critical, but in order to benefit from it we must initiate new actions which require our coastal engineering consultants, and which in turn requires your financial support. We want to thank everyone who responded to our request for erosion and beach access information just prior to the DEP visit on Feb 18. Based on their inspection, we anticipate that they will declare additional coastline as critically eroded. We hope to see you on the 19th of April. In addition, please help us spread the word about this upcoming meeting. Our Association s success to date is the result of our members being well-informed and supporting our activities. For additional information, contact: Tom Turnage Linda Chambless tturnage@southpontevedra-vilano.com lcc320@bellsouth.net 387-0770 829-9861 ST. AUGUSTINE LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY Paul Eckstein (Cdr. U.S. Navy Ready Reserve, Retired), who is on staff with the St. Augustine Lighthouse, will discuss the construction of lighthouses along the Florida coast and their historic role during all conflicts, from the time they were built to today. Paul will focus on the St. Augustine Light and add a few ghost stories for entertainment value. If you are a current or past officer in our nation's military, the wife/husband or widow/widower of same, you are cordially invited to attend the Ancient City Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America's March 27th (Thursday) luncheon meeting at the Holiday Isle Oceanfront Resort, 860 A1A Beach Blvd, St Augustine Beach, FL 32080 at 11:30 am.
