Starting A Tradition From the Riordans, to the Babbits, to the Switzers, the founding generations of Flagstaff laid the groundwork for a town and community, which would one day become a gem to Northern Arizona. They have all left a mark on our mountain town, but most notably, they ve left their names. The Switzer family was one of the founding pioneers of Flagstaff. William Asa Switzer, a Civil War Veteran, and his family traveled to Northern Arizona in 1883. William s son, William H. Switzer, was 5 years old when he first arrived in the town of Flagstaff. Although his dreams were to become a rough and tough cowboy, William H. Switzer (a.k.a Uncle Billy ) spent much of his younger years tending to the dairy cows on his family s homestead. In essence, Uncle Billy became one of Flagstaff s Milk Men, as he delivered milk from his family s dairy to the rest of the community. Growing up, Uncle Billy was heavily involved in the town s education system. It is said he was one of the few individuals who received the most education in Flagstaff; beginning his elementary education in a tiny school room taught by Eva Marshal, until his graduation from what is now Northern Arizona University. Uncle Billy married another Flagstaff pioneer, Nettie Lockwood, and together they raised five daughters and two sons. After working in a number of different jobs, Billy established a solid saddle and harness business before, eventually, buying the Sam Finley building downtown and opening Switzer s Hardware. This tall, three-story building is now home to an art gallery and the pleasurable Wine Loft. Billy was active in the community throughout his life, played a major role in the Rotary Club and restoring the Historical Society. William H. Switzer and his family lived in Flagstaff for most of their lives. Billy was well-liked throughout the community and truly loved his life in the peaceful mountain town. He passed away at the age of 98 making his time in Flagstaff a long run of 93 years. Today, William H. Switzer s name still lives on. The beautiful Switzer Canyon, which once held the Switzer dairy farm, was named after him and his family. This historic land will soon become the home of a future generation and the community of Switzer Canyon Village.
