Copyright 2010 - Snobirds Snowmobile Club Inc. - All Rights Reserved SAFETY SCHOOL Gary Breuckman The Snobirds will again be offering snowmobile safety classes this winter. The classes are conducted by qualified instructors, from the Snobirds, who are certified by the State D.N.R.. Satisfactory completion of the class meets the D.N.R. requirements. Any person who is at least 12 years old AND who is born on or after January 1, 1985 is required to possess a valid Snowmobile Safety Certificate in order to operate a snowmobile on public trails, lands or frozen waters. You must carry the certificate while riding and you must display it to a law enforcement officer when requested. Enrollment is open to young persons 11 years of age and older. As this training is important to public and personal safety, a parent or guardian is welcome to attend with the son or daughter. There is a $10 fee for registration and D.N.R. safety materials. The course consists of three evening classes with subjects of snowmobile laws, ethics, terminology, maintenance, clothing, first aid, environmental and ecology problems. We have two sets of indoor sessions scheduled this season. Total cost is $10.00 The first set will be December 1, 8 and 15 at the Menomonee Falls Community Center, W152 N8645 Margaret Rd in Menomonee Falls. The second set of classes will be on January 5, 12 and 19. For reservations call Gary Breuckman at 414-442-4279. Classes run from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each night, and you must attend all three sessions to be certified. The weather was spectacular, especially for October, and the traffic was light. Once all were out fitted in the custom orange vests. I gave a quick analysis of what not to pick up and where not to go. As is the norm, we divided into two groups and left the parking lot at Whiskey Corners at precisely nine AM. There were thirteen Snobirds who planned on cleaning up our environment and maybe pick up a little cash on the side. Yes I'm always telling how there is cash to be found and this time Kim Q was the benefactor. She came up with a whole bag of cash which she declined to share. That being the lucky find of the day, we were finishing up by ten forty-five. Not a record, but plenty fast. Most of the right of way was in decent condition. We were able to get there before the county mowers. This meant picking up one piece instead of thirty five. I noted that there were thirteen of us and they were; Bruce Blodgett, Ed & Bonnie Pollich, Kim Quicker with DJ & JJ, Bill Schultz, Judy Smiley, Bruce & Sherry Wankowski, Ron Wendt, and Judy Mingari. Now for the fun part. Bruce and Kathi whipped up some fine vittles for all the volunteers. We went over to Lannon Park and had the pavilion to ourselves for the de-briefing session. Thank you to Bruce & Kathi. Also, many thanks to all the highway clean up participants who volunteered their time this year. Without your help we could not accomplish this endeavor. Joe M.

AWSC NEWS by Scott Makowski AWSC Past President The AWSC Annual Workshop was held over the weekend of October 22 to 24 2010 in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. This was a very busy weekend for over 700 snowmobilers who came together to learn and share ideas with other representatives from clubs all over the state. Workshops were held on Snowmobile Safety, You and the AWSC, Taxes and your club, Groomer Tips and Tricks, Successful Fundraising, Youth Programs, and the CAP/STEP Program (Legislative Program). Awards were passed out to people who have served AWSC during the past who have served. Our club had 2 individuals who fell into this category. Bev Makowski, who served as Director, and Ken Lange, Rep; both representing Waukesha County. A new queen was selected to represent AWSC for the next year to promote the association and snowmobiling for the next year. Her name is Brittany Thompson from Brown County. The Scholarship Program was announced and a silent auction was held to help support scholarships. We encourage all snowmobiling high school students to apply. Applications are on the AWSC website. Deadline for these is February 11, 2011 to the AWSC office. On Sunday morning the AWSC Directors meet to discuss the business and issues facing the association. We learned that the University of Wisconsin with the help of AWSC members will be conducting an Economic Study of snowmobiling in Wisconsin. This is important to snowmobiling because it shows how much snowmobilers contribute to the economy. It also could give us more dollars for trails in our state. If asked to fill out a survey, please take the time and answer honestly. The survey period will run from December 2010 to March 2011. AWSC raffle tickets and raffle Calendars ($20 each) were available for pick-up. Anyone interested in a calendar contact me or see me at a meeting. You could win a prize everyday including snowmobiles. Your AWSC works for you, please support them and always remember UNITED WE TRAIL, DIVIDED WE FAIL! Waukesha County Snowmobile Assn. Report by Bev Makowski Snobird Rep The trail masters from the WCSA met prior to the meeting to discuss upcoming plans for this season. They were informed that bills needed to be turned in promptly and by the deadlines given to them if they expected payments for trail work and grooming on time. They are to notify the hotline when trails are open for their area. Due to different snow conditions in areas of the county this is important to keep the public aware of where they can ride when conditions allow trails to open. The trail along Hwy 164 in the Sussex area has been moved to the west of Hwy 164 for safety reasons and to make it more scenic for the riders. This trail runs between Sussex and the Lake 5 area. The Merton area also will have some changes to the trail in their area which is not on the map. STAY ON THE MARKED TRAILS! The Snow Show held in October was a great success, WCSA raffle tickets were up at the show, the swap meet had an average number of displayers as in previous years but made $1,900. Possibly one smaller bill may be outstanding. WCSA maps were available at the snow show and are available at club meetings as of now. The advertisers will receive theirs for customers shortly after December 1, 2010. Waukesha County clubs upcoming events: January 15, 2011 Chili dump at Suhmers Saloon on trail in Eagle, WI. Hosted by the Eagle Kettle Moraine Riders. January 15, 2011 Northlake Winterfest hosted by the Northlake Nomads at their club house on Hwy 83 Northlake. January 30, 2011 Snowmobile races (drags and ovals) and Vintage Show hosted by the New Berlin Snow-Hawks at the New Berlin VFW grounds on Beloit Road, New Berlin.
