Volume 52 April 2018 Number 4 From the Superintendent s Desk In one of my earlier messages I quoted someone to say The only constant in life is change. How true that is. The first change is that in May Fred Soward will be your new superintendent. Ron Ellison will be a new trustee. Please join me in congratulating them. More next month on these great guys and the members who they will be replacing. The second change is our annual picnic. Hold on to your hats - it will be held on August 4th, this year and I think you ll like why. TIME TABLE Apr 21, Sat 2 PM,Div.8 Mtg., 600 Room. May 17-20 MCR Convention, Cincinnati, OH. May 26, Sat 2 PM, Div.8 Mtg. 600 Room (this is the 4 th Saturday) Jun 16, Sat 2 PM, Div.8 Mtg. 600 Room Jul 21, Sat 2 PM, Div 8 Mtg. 600 Room Aug 4, Sat, Picnic, Ray and Renee Grosser s in Eubank, KY. Many Division 10 members (Lexington area) have participated in our events, and a few Division 8 members attend ops sessions in the Lexington area so we have got to know them well. They suggested we join them for their picnic in August in association with Ray and Renee Grosser s train day. Ray invites a number of fellow modelers who have the same 7 1/2 inch gauge trains and they run them all day. If you haven t seen any of Ray s You Tube videos I encourage you to do so as he has extensive trackage over his property. We will join Division 10 members for lunch at the Kentucky Depot Restaurant, then go on to the Grosser s for a day of train watching and RIDING! At March meeting we asked members who would be interested in going to see if we could secure a bus. There was, so soon we will announce the sign-up details. Finally I d like to remind you that the MCR convention in May is right up the road in Cincinnati. This is your last chance to go to a MCR convention so close to home as next year s is in Youngstown, Ohio and the following year, Pittsburgh. Unfortunately conventions don t pro-rate your registration by the number of days you attend, however, if you don t want to pay any hotel charges, Friday s are always non-stop with things to do and see. With that, I would like to remind you conventions, our monthly meetings, and clubs are a great way to pick up new, or better ways to make your own layout run and look like the ones you see in magazines. One more quote, don t just belong, participate. See you at one of these events. MARCH MEETING REPORT By Bob Dawson, Clerk The meeting was held at 2 PM March 17, at the 600 Building. Attendance was 25. Bob Dawson gave the program, Action at Marion, photos and a short history of rail hot spot Marion, Ohio. Fred and Barbara Soward provided the refreshments. The election of officers for 2018-19 was concluded at the meeting. The results are on page 2 of this issue. It was reported that member John Bowman had fallen was in recovery. (Since the meeting, John has passed away, his obituary is page 5). Ron Ellison reminded everyone of our March 24 Spring Trainshow and Sale. New this year is a members table for those that have a few items to sell, but not enough to reserve their own table.. Volunteers are still needed for set Friday, dealer assist on Saturday morning and take down at 3 PM Saturday. Mark Hedge reported that to date, 67 tables have been reserved with 63 paid. This year s summer outing will be in August rather than July as usual. We are joining Division 10 (Lexington) with a trip to Ray and Renee Grossers. See From the Superintendents Desk this page for more details. Contest results are on page 2 with photos on page 3.

Page 2 CHARLIE KEELING MODEL CONTEST Fred Soward, Contest Chairman April Passenger Cars May Cabooses June Open Loads July MOW Equipment August NO CONTEST September Photos October Steam Locomotives November Displays/Dioramas December NO CONTEST January Freight Cars February Diesel Locomotives March Structures There were 12 Commercial Structure entries, from N scale to O scale, submitted by 9 individuals in the March 2018 monthly meeting contest. Take a look at the Division 8 Facebook page (March 19) for photos of all the entries. John Stoltz came in first with his HO scale Foundry/Machine Shop, Rick Maloney came in second with his N scale Boating/Fishing Building, and Cecil Stewart came in third with his HO scale Stock Pens (twin, double deck chutes with 5 holding pens). See page 3 for photos of winners, and description of John Stoltz s first place winner. Current standings: John Stoltz leads with 15 points; Bill Lynch is in second place with 12 points; Joe Fields is third with 10 points; Bob Frankrone is fourth with 9 points; Bob Kuchler is next with 8 points; Barry Christensen is next with 6 points; Bob Johnson, Ed Brennan, and Rick Maloney are next with 4 points; Cecil Stewart, Patrick Hardesty, Robert Johnson, and Ron Ellison are next with 2 points; and Robin White and Stan White are at 1 point. If you weren t at the meeting, you missed the discussion about renaming Commercial Structures to Structures. To clarify, if it fits the NMRA AP program category for structures, it s acceptable. What isn t acceptable is dioramas/displays because we do those in November. For April, we ll be looking at Passenger Cars. We also switched things up a bit for July and August. Because of the shuffle of the picnic from July to August to go to the event with Division 10, we ll not have a meeting in August. To accommodate all that, we ll award the annual contest year awards at the July meeting this year. I ll take care of that as my last act as the Contest Chairman. Barry Christensen and Bob Kuchler have agreed to co-chair the meeting contest beginning with the July 2018 meeting. They will conduct the first contest of the 2018-2019 contest year at that same meeting with MOW Equipment. There will be blank contest entry forms for anyone who needs one at the meeting. You can save yourself some time at the meeting by downloading the entry form from the Division 8 website or Facebook page and completing it prior to arriving at the meeting. (Continued column 2) MARCH MEETING INFORMATION This month s meeting will be 2 PM Saturday April 21, at the 600 Room, first floor of the 600 Building, 600 N. Hurstbourne Pkwy. 40222. Park in the lot on the west side of the building on N. Whittington Pkwy. Use the Whittington Pkwy. entrance. Mike Berry will be showing a Norfolk Southern video for the program. Bob Kuchler will provide the refreshments. CONTEST (continued from column 1) The judging is strictly people s choice. If you would also like your model to be judged for the Achievement program, contact Joe Fields and he will arrange to have AP judges present. John Stoltz won the gift card drawing. MAINTENANCE TIES FUND 2017 The Maintenance Ties Fund helps underwrite the Member Welfare Fund and the printing of the Pie Card for those members who don t have access to a computer. The Member Welfare Fund provides a gift certificate to a member or spouse who has been hospitalized. It is also used for an expression of sympathy upon the death of a member or a member s spouse. Donations to date: Rob Cooper and Shanna Berry, $100; Ron Ellison, $59; Ed Brennan, $50; John Ottman, $40; John Czerwinskie, Jim Kuzirian, $11. ELECTION RESULTS The 2018 Division 8 elections were concluded at the March Meeting. Elected: Super indent: Fred Soward Asst. Superintendent: Eric Waggoner Treasurer: Mike Berry Secretary: Bob Dawson Trustee: Ron Ellison They will take office at the May meeting. COMPANY STORE PRICE INCREASE Ed Brennan, Company Store Manager The Pie Card Due to increased costs, Division 8 shirts and hats purchased through the Company Store will have a minor price increase. Shipping fees for these items will also increase to reflect increases in postal rates. There will be no change in price for the Division 8 HO scale tank cars since they were purchased some time ago. Current prices for all items are indicated on the order form available on the Division 8 website.

The Pie Card Page 3 MARCH CHARLIE KEELING MODEL CONTEST WINNERS Photos and descriptions by Fred Soward Left: John Stoltz s first place foundry/machine shop is an HO scale scratchbuilt structure based on a building in Rice s Landing, PA. He visited the prototype in 2016 and found that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Unfortunately, on the day of his visit, the building was closed so he could not directly view the interior workings. However, he was able to obtain information and drawings about the building from the NHS and the group that maintains the building. Right: Interior Originally built in 1900, it served area shipping, mining and railroad industries. John s model was built using scale lumber and metal roofing from Northeastern and Midwest Products. The windows and doors are Grandt Line and Tichy Train group with modifications by John. The machinery is from Rusty Stumps and Rio Grande Models, painted and stained with Tamiya acrylic paints. Below: Rick Maloney took second with his N-Scale Boat and Fishing building. Below left: Cecil Stewart took third with his scratchbuilt HO livestock loading pens.

Page 4 The Pie Card SPRING TRAIN SHOW AND SALE 2018 is the 28th year of the Trains Show & Sale Thank you to all the Division 8 members who helped with and attended the Show. It was because of all of you that our Spring Show was such a success. We had paid attendance of 394 visitors. Above: Friday night, the calm before the storm. A special thank you to member wives Karen Fowler and Theresa Berry for helping with our front end admissions table. Also to Barbara Soward for greeting our Dealers at the front door. And to Don Fowler keeping our parking organized and getting the dealers unloaded in the rain. And last but not least to Mark Hedge who got our dealers to the Show. We re already working on the second half of our 28th year and the Fall Train Show & Sale on November 17, 2018. Mark your calendars. Thanks everyone, Ron Ellison Photos by Ron Ellison Above: T-Track setting up before the show: Above: Southern Indiana layout.

The Pie Card Page 5 IN MEMORIAM JOHN BOWMAN John Bowman (age 81) unexpectedly passed away on March 19, 2016. A lifelong resident of New Albany, IN John was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired from Colgate-Palmolive Company. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, daughter Linda Robinson, and grandsons Robert and Joshua Cobb. John was member of Division 8 from its earliest days, and was a life member of NMRA. John served as superintendent of Division 8 from May 1986 to May 1988. He was also a member of the Louisville Connecting Lines (LCL) model railroad club PAINT BOTTLE HINTS By John Czerwinski As most of the Division 8 members are more experienced modelers than I the following may already be known to them. For those who do not know these hints, - here goes. On my trip to the last 2017 Division 8 regular meeting Cecil Stuart and I stopped at Scale Reproductions for some parts. My list was mostly paints to replace my aging Testor's one quarter ounce paints. Noting my paint haul Cecil suggested that I put a B-B in each bottle as an agitator when the bottle is shaken. I didn't find any B-Bs but did find some air gun pellets which worked just as well. The air gun pellets I used are shown at the front of the picture at right. One thing I noticed is that when the pigment separates from the base the pigment binds the pellet to the bottom of the paint jar. This can be overcome by more shaking to stir the base pigment mix more thoroughly. While painting a model my wife watched me look through several bottles before finding the bottle with the color I wanted. After watching my search she suggested that I paint half of the bottle cap with the paint color from the bottle. This is shown on the group of paint bottles in Figure 1. The bottles shown represent only about one third of my available paint. None of the Testor's one quarter ounce bottles are shown. I have found painting the bottle caps like this useful. I can find the color I want much more quickly than before. WORKING TOWARDS AN ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM AWARD? By Mark Norman If you are working toward an Achievement Program award, or simply want to remember what materials you used, documentation is critical. A pencil and inexpensive notebook are useful. Later, critical information is keyed into my word processing program and saved.

The Pie Card Page 6 LOVE THOSE LOADS By Bob Frankrone. In the early nineties I attended an NMRA regional convention in Dayton, Ohio. Since that was one of my first model railroad conventions, I remember vividly some of the clinics I attended, the tours I went on, and the wonderful people I met over those four fun-filled days. One clinic that I will never forget was on the topic of open loads. Sorry to say I cannot remember the names of the two people who presented that clinic, but I remember their subject matter very well. I already had an interest in open loads, but it wasn t until I attended that clinic that I realized the unlimited possibilities of creating open freight car loads. Although it s been a long time since I attended that open loads clinic (more years than I care to remember), my passion for open loads still remains strong and has not diminished. This month I will feature an open load that I built (or should I say copied) as a direct result of attending that clinic. It is a load of steel reinforcing rods, or rebar, as it is more commonly known. To build this load I used 22-gauge floral stem wire (not spooled) that is available in most craft stores. I cut the wires to 7 3/4-inch lengths and I assembled them into bundles of ten wires each. I used sewing thread to bind the ten wires together, tying them in five places along the length of the wires. This proved to be the most difficult part of this project as it was a little tricky making sure each tie was snug against the wires. I made a total of 12 bundles, which was enough to make a sufficiently sized load. I selected a 60-foot flat car as the platform to transport the steel rods; however, I needed to make a simple modification to the car before it was ready to accept the load. Using scale lumber that I painted a dark gray, I constructed six finger-like mounting fixtures, which are necessary to support the individual bundles of wire. I then glued the mounting fixtures to the deck of the flat car, being careful to space them equidistance apart, as shown in photo #1. Once the flat car had been modified, I placed the bundles of wire between the vertical tines of the mounting fixtures -- four bundles each in the two center channels and two bundles each in the two outside channels. I chose not to secure them to the car, but this could easily be done using a heavy thread to represent tie-down cables. Photo #2 shows the finished model.

The Pie Card Page 7 TRACKSIDE WITH BILL LYNCH Bill commented: Here are some photos of the latest power on the Louisville & Indiana Railroad, reporting marks LIRC. These are SD45's modified to SD40-2 and are on a long term lease. Their main use now is a daily round trip from Jeffersonville, In. to Columbus Yard, to Indiana Railroad and back. Sure is great having so much railroading so close. Bill took these photos at Speed, IN just north of Sellersburg. Before Conrail the LIRC was a Pennsylvania RR route. The herald on the side of their locomotives honor that heritage as well as honoring our veterans past and present. Page 8
