Intel Global Challenge 2013: Travel and Accommodation Information This document provides some helpful guidelines and suggestions for traveling to and within the San Francisco Bay Area (including Palo Alto and Berkeley). The Intel Global Challenge at UC Berkeley (IGC) organizers are not responsible for making travel and hotel arrangements for participating teams. This includes booking airline tickets and ground transportation to/from the hotel and airport. Please check with your sponsoring regional representative to confirm travel and hotel booking process for your team. LODGING AND HOTELS: Please note participants should book lodging rooms in both Palo Alto AND Berkeley, and use the reservation methods below to guarantee the Intel Global Challenge room rate. Reservations not secured through this process may be subject to different room rates. IGC Participants should plan to stay at the Sheraton Palo Alto for the nights of October 5 and 6, and Hotel Shattuck Plaza in Berkeley on the nights of October 7, 8, and 9. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) San Francisco Airport (SFO) is one of the USA's busiest airports, handling both domestic flights and international connections for the Pacific Rim, Europe and Latin America. Located 14 miles (22 kilometers) south of San Francisco, SFO serves the cosmopolitan city of San Francisco, Silicon Valley and the greater Bay Area. These include Caltrain trains, taxis, shared ride vans and public buses. Caltrain Caltrain provides commuter rail service along the San Francisco Peninusla, through the South Bay to San Jose and Gilroy. To access Caltrain from SFO, simply take the SFO AirTrain to Garage G. One level below the AirTrain stop is BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). You will take a short BART ride from SFO to the BART/Caltrain depot in Millbrae and you will then transfer to Caltrain and take it to the Palo Alto station. The schedule for Caltrain can be found on their website: http://www.caltrain.com/ Taxis Taxis wait at taxi ranks on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level of all terminals. The ranks are located on Center Island roadways. Uniformed personnel coordinate the ranks. The fare is approximately $96.00 from the airport to Palo Alto. Shared Ride Van / Shuttle Shared ride vans operate between the airport and many places in the Bay Area. Most of them operate a door-to-door service. Vans pick up and drop off on the Departures/Ticketing Levels of all terminals. Pick-up/drop-off zones are located on the Center Island roadways. A couple of options are listed below (you may wish to reserve ahead of time): Bayporter Express Shuttle: Approximate fare from San Francisco (SFO) to Palo Alto is approximately $95. Getting from SFO to Berkeley San Francisco International Airport is served by many different means of transportation that connect the airport to Berkeley. These include Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) trains, taxis, shared ride vans and public buses. BART Bay Area Rapid Transit provides metro rail service within the San Francisco Bay Area. It has a station at the airport. AirTrain links to the BART station at the Garage G/BART station stop. The BART station is located on the G gates side of the International Terminal on Level 3, which is the Departures/Ticketing level. BART services run from 4:00 am to 12:00 am. In order to reach Berkeley via BART, you will need to take the Richmond train to Downtown Berkeley. After 6:00 pm, you need to take the Pittsburg/Bay Point train to 12 th Street, Oakland City Center; transfer to the Richmond train and take it to the Downtown Berkeley exit. Getting from SJC to Palo Alto San Jose Airport is served by many different means of transportation that connect the airport to the Peninsula. These include taxis, shared ride vans and public buses. Taxis Taxis are stationed at the Airport for on-demand service. They are accessible from Terminal A and Terminal B. Approximate fare is $45-$55. In addition to the on demand service, taxis are available on a prearranged basis. Please contact the company of your choice to schedule reservations. Public Transportation Caltrain: Caltrain provides commuter rail service along the San Francisco Peninusla, through the South Bay to San Jose and Gilroy. To access Caltrain, take the Airport Flyer, which makes a continuous loop between the Metro Light Rail Station, the Santa Clara Caltrain Station and the Airport Terminals. A new shuttle departs each designated stopping point approximately every 15-30 minutes from 5:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. You will then transfer to Caltrain. The schedule for Caltrain can be found on their website: http://www.caltrain.com/ OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (OAK) Oakland International Airport (OAK) is the other major airport that services San Francisco and Berkeley. You can then take BART from the airport to Caltrain for a small fare. To get to Palo Alto, take the Richmond/Millbrae Line from Coliseum/Oakland Airport to the Millbrae BART/Caltrain Depot.
You will then transfer to Caltrain and take it to the Palo Alto Caltrain Station. The Caltrain schedule can be found on their website: www.caltrain.com. Taxi Taxis also service Oakland Airport and the fare to Palo Alto will be approximately $100. Shared Ride Van There are also shared ride vans that operate between the airport and Palo Alto (Santa Clara County). However, there is also extensive bus service around the university.
