Strip maps are designed to assist drivers by showing distances, roadside features and town facilities on a simple flip-over style map, which can also be used in reverse. N.B : Free Emergency Road Service is available to trailers and caravans up to 2 tonnes gross weight, towed by members, on production of your membership card, both in South Australia and interstate. Travellers from South Australia visiting any other State or Territory may circulate freely as it is not necessary to observe any formalities in regard to registration, insurance etc., either at the border or elsewhere. Sth Para R. - 37 kilometres Routes A1 & A20 Main North (approx. population 1,040,720) Situated on the banks of the River Torrens and capital of South Australia, Adelaide is renowned for its town planning by Col. William Light who is rightly referred to as the founder and father of Adelaide. Founded in 1836, Adelaide is now a modern, well established city, noted for its lush parklands, festivals and churches. ELIZABETH (suburb of Adelaide) Situated 26 km north of Adelaide, this satellite town was established in 1954 by the South Australian Housing Trust. A housing venture without parallel in post-war Australia, the population in the area continues to increase. Little Para H M PO River (approx. population 20,000) Proclaimed on January 31 st 1839, Gawler is South Australia s first country town. It was laid out by Colonel William Light and named after the second Governor of South Australia, Lieut.- Colonel George Gawler. It is now a service centre for the surrounding pastoral interests, wine producers and light industries, and is recognised as an important equestrian centre. Light North Para R. - CLARE 95 kilometres Routes A20, A32 & B82 Main North (approx. population 20,000) Proclaimed on January 31 st 1839, Gawler is South Australia s first country town. River Broughton CLARE ORROROO 130 kilometres Routes B82 & B80 CLARE (approx. population 3,060) One of South Australia s oldest and most prosperous country towns. Edward Burton Gleeson named this important commercial centre after County Clare in Ireland. Many rich farming properties surround the town amid beautiful countryside, while the Clare Valley wineries are a major attraction. JAMESTOWN (approx. population 1,410) On the banks of the picturesque Belalie Creek, Jamestown is the centre of a prosperous agricultural district producing cereal crops and wool, as well as timber from the nearby Bundaleer Forest. PETERBOROUGH (approx. population 1,690) Originally called Petersburg, the town was renamed Peterborough in 1918. Initially a small farming centre, Peterborough became a major rail junction and was one of the few places in the world where three different track gauges met. The Steamtown Peterborough society strives to preserve the town s railway heritage. ORROROO (approx. population 540) Situated picturesquely on the eastern edge of the Flinders Ranges, Orroroo is a small service centre for tourists entering the Flinders Ranges and other outback areas. It is located in a good wheat, sheep and cattle farming area. CARRIETON and CRADOCK Two small towns en route, both servicing local primary industry. HAWKER (approx. population 220) The town is situated on a small plain, almost entirely encircled by hills. Hawker once serviced a wheat district but poor rainfall saw a significant fall in wheat production. Sheep grazing and tourism are now the town s main industries.
