The Maldives are 820 kilometers north to south and 120 kilometers east to west.the islands are low lying with the highest natural point only 2.2 meters tall.the islands have been populated for over 5000 years.the Maldivian culture has been derived from a number of sources.its close proximity to Sri Lanka and Southern India has meant that there has been major cultural influence from these regions.originally the inhabitants of the Maldives were Buddhist but in the 12th century Islam was introduced and it remains the country s national religion.at one stage a colony of Portugal (1558) then the Dutch (1654) and the British (1887) the Maldives gained its independence in 1965. climate The Maldives has a tropical climate and as such there is relatively little change in the overall temperature throughout the year. The hottest month is April and the coldest is December although the average daily temperature is 30oC.The region is subject to a double monsoon. The south west monsoon occurs from May to November and the north east monsoon prevails from December to April. The north east monsoon does not attract the same degree of cloud over or rainfall as the south west monsoon, and the occasional afternoon shower will not detract from your enjoyment of the islands.night temperatures are pleasantly warm, although sea breezes can be quite cool. dietary requirements Provided we are advised in advance of your departure we are able to cater for vegetarian diets and can assist with medically recommended diets (allergies and intolerances). Please ensure you discuss your requirements with us well in advance (at least 1 month prior to your trip) to determine whether we can cater to such dietary requirements on your chosen adventure. Please note that options are likely to be limited in very remote locations or alternatives may be more expensive or unavailable. There may be times when those with special requirements may need to provide their own food. We are unable to guarantee a peanut free or allergen free trip, and therefore, we strongly encourage that travellers with life threatening or severe allergies take all necessary medical precautions to prepare for the possibility of exposure. Passengers must travel with all necessary medications for food allergies and be capable of self administering these medications. accommodation on the trip In the Maldives we use several different dhonis, cabins are cosy and comfortable with bunk beds, some without ensuite (depending on group size and time of travel).
