Where d we stay? What are the accmmdatins like? Yu will stay n campus at a private all-girls high schl, Immaculate Cnceptin Girls High Schl, this schl is ne f the tp schls in Jamaica and the building yu stay in used t be an ld htel, it is nw reserved fr visiting vlunteer grups. It is a beautiful building n a private, safe campus and has its wn swimming pl. Hundreds f American grups have stayed there and the Tufts University wmen s lacrsse team is staying there just ne week befre ur trip. (Alternative accmmdatins can be made at an additinal cst.) What d we eat? Yu will have a simple breakfast and lunch and a nice dinner. Typical breakfast: tast with butter and jam r peanut butter, cereal, bananas, tea, cffee, juice, water. Typical lunch: Peanut butter & jelly, banana r assrted fruits, water, juice. Typical dinner: Assrted Jamaican style dishes (chicken, beef, fish prepared in a traditinal Jamaican manner) assrted vegetables, rice, pasta. It is very easy t be a vegetarian r t g gluten free n ur trips. Fd like KFC, Burger King and TGIF are als available if thse n the trip d nt feel cmfrtable with the fd r desire additinal ptins. What shts d I need? Yu d nt need any special shts r medicatins t travel t Jamaica. D vlunteers ever get sick r injured? If s, what happens? Frtunately we have nt had any majr injuries r illnesses ver the past five years, but we are prepared in the case f an emergency. The mst cmmn health issues we face which are diarrhea and dehydratin. In the event f a serius r life-threatening injury we wuld ntify the US Embassy and immediate take the vlunteer t University f the West Indies Hspital. We the US Embassy s list f recmmended medical practitiners in the event that a vlunteer had any dental, specialist r pharmaceutical needs during their experience. We purchase emergency health insurance that wuld enable us t fly a vlunteer hme in the event f a majr health emergency. Hw d we travel when we are n the grund? We travel in private, insured mini-busses thrughut the experience. 1
The Purpse f the Trip: Cach (and play): Yu will serve as a vlunteer cach thrughut the experience as we run ur camp, but will als represent the USA in the Jamaica Friendship Turnament t where yu will play with the Jamaica girls high schl teams and members f the Jamaica Girls Natinal Team. Serve: Yu will help run a free yuth lacrsse clinic with the Jamaica Yuth Lacrsse Academy. Learn: In additin t yur service wrk and caching, yu will be n an experiential learning missin that tuches upn a multitude f cultural, plitical and sci-ecnmic tpics. *Culture & Fun: In additin t Caching, Serving and Learning, we will als be sure t wrk in time fr sme fun and culture. These activities g hand-in-hand with the experiential learning aspect f the prgram and include; a visit t Prt Ryal and bat ride t Lime Cay, an interactive histry f Jamaican music experience, dancing lessns, time at the beach and mre! Then yu will mve t the baggage claim area. Once yu get yur bags yu will walk ut the ne and nly exit fr arrivals and will nt be able t miss the JLA supprt team. We will be there with signage. We will let yu share ur cell phnes t call hme. The grup will share a cell phne thrughut the experience. Internet: We have Wi Fi where we stay, s yu will be able t cmmunicate back hme via the internet in the mrning and at night. Fifteen minutes by bat frm Prt Ryal is a small, lwlying island cay with ne f the mst beautiful beaches in Jamaica. The largest f the many small cays ff the cast f Prt Ryal, Lime Cay is uninhabitable by humans. Sme f the best snrkeling n the sutheast cast f Jamaica can be dne arund Lime Cay.
