Am I eligible for a student pilot certificate? You are eligible if: You are at least 16 years old. If you plan to pilot a glider or balloon, you must be at least 14 years old. You can read, speak, and understand English AND You hold at least a current third-class medical certificate. If you plan to pilot a glider or balloon, you only have to certify that you have no medical defect that would make you unable to pilot a glider or balloon. How do I get a student pilot certificate? Upon your request, an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner will issue you a combined medical certificate and Student Pilot Certificate after you complete your physical examination. Student Pilot Certificates may be issued by an FAA inspector or an FAA-designated pilot examiner. Applicants who fail to meet certain requirements or who have physical disabilities which might limit, but not prevent, their acting as pilots, should contact the nearest FAA office. Locate an Aviation Medical Examiner. How long are my student pilot certificate and my medical certificate valid? Please refer to 14 CFR 61.23 for complete information. Your flight instructor must make this endorsement before you solo in each make or model of aircraft. Does the endorsement to solo allow me to make solo cross-country flights? No. You also have to get a cross-country flight endorsement from you flight instructor. Must I carry my student pilot certificate with me when I am piloting an aircraft in solo flight? Yes. Is there a charge for the student pilot certificate? Not when it's issued by an FAA Flight Standards District Office. License, however the national average is higher. Below is an approximation of cost with local price range listed. Also, each individual has slightly different outcomes on completion times of training. Minimum Hours Required Tomahawk - $85 Instruction @ $35/Hr. The rental cost is usually directly related to fuel prices. Cost varies for everyone but is influenced by these two major components (if you are attempting to finish your licenses in the least amount of hours to save on cost, take note of these points.). Fly Often. If your flying is sporadic and inconsistent, or less than two times per week, expect to spent more money. Flying less that twice per week causes your lessons to have more times spent reviewing what was done in the previous lesson than if you were flying regularly and able to just focus on adding new skills to what was learned in the previous lesson. Study Hard. There is book knowledge and studying that is necessary if you are going to pass the test to become a competent pilot. For each hour spent flying expect to spent 2 to 3 hours studying the various books and reading material that goes along with joining the pilot club. Note: The Sport Pilot Licenses requires a minimum of 20 hours of flight training (15 duel instruction and five supervised solo). A better estimation would be more in the range of about 30-32 hours.
