Montenegro PETROVAC 2019

WELCOME TO Montenegro Montenegro is one of the smallest and newest Balkan countries, having separated from Serbia in 2006. It has a mountainous interior and a superb Adriatic coastline. With a population of only 620,000, Montenegro is dependent on tourism and the popular coastal resorts are expanding fast. By contrast the footpaths in the hills are seldom walked and are rich in natural beauty. Situated on the beautiful Montenegrin coast, the small resort of Petrovac is a very attractive base from which to explore the local area. The town itself centres on the pretty promenade and picturesque harbour, where you ll find a good selection of souvenir shops, bars and cafés. Immediately behind rise the Pastrovici Mountains, the foothills of which form the basis of some of our walks. Just to the north of Petrovac is the stunning old town of Sveti Stefan built on a tiny island and reached by a spit of land. Inland lie the beautiful waters of 2 Call 020 8732 1250 or visit hfholidays.co.uk Lake Skadar where we will enjoy a cruise after a walk above its shores. The highlight of a fantastic week s walking will be the day spent in Lovćen National Park high above the dramatic Kotor Bay, and a trip to the perfectly preserved old towns on the bay is highly recommended for your free day. A visit to Montenegro, the Black Pearl of the Balkans, is a fascinating cultural experience and our walks and sightseeing visits will give a great insight into this charming new country.

ACCOMMODATION Hotel Palas Petrovac Montenegro Tel: 00382 33 421 100 The 4-star Hotel Palas is located on the promenade with attractive terraces and gardens planted with orange and olive trees. It is within easy walking distance of the shops and behind the hotel are the towering Pastrovici Mountains. The hotel owns part of the sandy Lucice beach and their guests enjoy private seating. WiFi is available throughout the hotel. Bedrooms: There are 173 bedrooms, all en suite with bath/shower, hairdryer, mini bar, room safe, air conditioning, TV and telephone. Tea and coffee making facilities are not provided in the bedrooms but hot drinks can be purchased from the bar. Facilities: There is a wellness centre and spa with a Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, whirlpool, an outdoor salt water pool and indoor fresh water pool. There are a range of treatments available to book for an additional cost. There are two hotel bars, one near the reception with lovely views to the sea and nearby islands, and one near the pool. Meals: All our holidays include breakfast and evening meal. Vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements should discuss them with the hotel staff on arrival. Breakfast: Available from 7am to 10am. You will find an extensive selection of hot and cold choices on the buffet. Evening meal: Hotel Palas offers a 3-course evening meal which is served buffet style. Lunch: There is a lovely bakery and supermarket in Petrovac where you can buy ingredients for your picnic lunch. On some occasions it may be possible to visit shops on our walks, or eat in a local café. Your leader will advise you of the options. Call 020 8732 1250 or visit hfholidays.co.uk 3

Guided Walking ITINERARY A unique feature of our Guided Walking holidays is the daily choice of walks. Each evening your leaders will give a short talk about the options for the next day and answer any questions that you may have. In Petrovac you ll have a choice of two guided walks on each walking day. Easier Walks: 3 to 7 miles (5-11km) generally on good paths and stony tracks. Up to 1,300 feet (390m) of ascent in a day. Harder Walks: 5 to 10 miles (8-16km) on steeper and rougher terrain. Up to 2,300 feet (690m) of ascent in a day. Please note that the itinerary outlined below is provisional and could be subject to change. For the most up to date information, please check our website. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort. Day 1: Arrival day On the first evening your leaders will explain more about our walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests. 4 Call 020 8732 1250 or visit hfholidays.co.uk Day 2: Monasteries and the coastal traverse On the slopes of the mountains above the coastal highway are numerous small communities, Orthodox monasteries and small farms with

summer grazing called katuns. These walks both use panoramic paths close to Petrovac, visit highly decorated churches, and are a great introduction to the area. Easier Walk: Walking from the hotel we pass the neighbouring picturesque Lučice beach and ascend to historic Gradište monastery, perched on a rocky outcrop. After a pleasant shaded traverse, we descend to a café at Buljarica beach for lunch before returning along the coast to our hotel. 4 miles (6½km) with 700 feet (210m) of ascent. Harder Walk: An undulating path through trees and flowers along the top of the coastal mountain range takes us to the tiny chapel at Ogradenica for lunch. A rocky descent follows across the flanks of the mountains to a welcoming café with wonderful coastal views to Sveti Stefan, a perfect end to our first day. 7 miles (11km with 700 feet (210m of ascent and 2,300 feet (690m) of descent. Day 3: The Tivat Peninsula and the Bay of Kotor The dramatic Bay of Kotor is flanked to the west by the wooded Tivat Peninsula culminating in Vrmac Hill. Among the trees lies the ruined 12 th century Slav settlement of Pasiglav and the bucolic 14 th century village of Gornja Lastva. Both walks enjoy a delightful path along the wooded slopes of Vrmac, and enjoy truly scenic views of the bay, often referred to as Europe s southernmost fjord, although it is actually a ria. Across the bay, the medieval towns of Perast and Kotor offer a taste of a possible excursion on the free day. Easier Walk: From Gornja Lastva we ascend through trees past the ruins of Pasiglav and continue steadily to the Tivat ridge with excellent views of Croatia and Serbia. An extraordinary former military road zigzags steadily down to the shore of Kotor Bay with views of the old town hemmed in by mountains. 7 miles (11km) with 1,300 feet (390m) of ascent. Harder Walk: We ascend on a steep footpath to the Church of Sveti Vid with views to the Adriatic, Croatia and Serbia, before a long steady ascent brings us to the Tivat ridge summit for lunch with more superb views. We follow the ridge to join the Franz Josef Steig and descend the path taken by the easier group to a bayside café. 9 miles (14½km) with 2,000 feet (600m) of ascent. Day 4: Cetinje and the Lučice National Park Towering above the bay of Kotor and dominating the northwest of Montenegro are two summits of Lovćen and the out-of-bounds Stirovnik at 1,749m and Jererski Vrh, crowned with the Mausoleum of Petar II at 1,657m is the target for today s harder walk. Both walks finish at Krstac on the boundary of the national park and at the head of one of the most spectacular roads in Europe. Both these walks, at over 4,000 feet, may be affected by snow early in the season. Easier Walk: After a brief exploration of the former imperial capital of Cetinje we start our walk at Ivanova Korita in Lovćen National Park. A well made former military road leads us past Alpine communities and descends with stunning views over the Bay of Kotor to a welcoming cafe at Krstac. 6 miles (9½km) with 700 feet (210m) of ascent and 1,800 feet (540) of descent. Harder Walk: High within the Park, we ascend through trees to the summit ridge and viewpoint of Mt Lovćen. Descending steadily on a rough track we rejoin the easier group and descend to Kotor Bay and the hotel. 7 miles (11km) with 1,600 feet (480m) of ascent and 2,400 feet (720m) of descent. Day 5: Free day Each week there is a free day when no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, walk independently or visit local places of interest. Some options for your free day may include: Perast and Kotor: If there is sufficient interest your leaders will organise a coach to the picturesque old town of Perast, nestling at the foot of the mountains standing between the two bays of the inner Boka and opposite the Verige Channel, for an opportunity to explore the town and the nearby island of Our Lady of the Rock. The coach will then drive back along the bay to Kotor, whose old city is surrounded by walls that rise spectacularly to the crest of a rocky hillside. Old Kotor is a densely packed triangle of twisting streets, tiny squares, cafés and churches, and is a delight to just wander through and explore. Budva: Nestling to the west of the lively holiday resort of Budva and to the north of Petrovac, Budva Stari Grad, or Old Town, has existed since before the 5 th century BC. When the Roman Empire was divided, the border between it and Byzantium was drawn through Budva. The town has been meticulously restored after extensive damage by an earthquake in 1979. There are many squares, museums, narrow streets and a busy harbour to explore. Call 020 8732 1250 or visit hfholidays.co.uk 5

Beaches: Within easy walking distance south of Petrovac is the quiet cove of Lučice, perfect for swimming. Café facilities are available here. A little further on is the wide expanse of reedbacked Buljarica beach. There is an excellent pool at the hotel. Details of other seasonal excursions are available from your leaders and the hotel reception desk. For information on Montenegro please visit www.visitmontenegro.com Day 6: Loška and Stari Bar Southeast of Petrovac towards the border with Albania, the Rumija range of mountains separates the Adriatic from Lake Skadar. This is a landscape where mosques sit alongside Orthodox churches and hillside farmers scratch a living. We pass the industrialised sprawl of Bar, the terminal on the Adriatic for the railway from Podgorica, to start our walks near Loška. Easier Walk: Our path undulates past prosperous farming communities before a steep track leading to a lovely lunch spot at Gornja Poda. Passing flower strewn meadows minor roads bring us back to the coach for transport to the fascinating ruins of Stari Bar. 7 miles (11km) with 1,000 feet (300m) of ascent and 2,100 feet (630m) of descent. Harder Walk: Starting far inland at the isolated Muslim community of Lunje we walk the first stage of the high level mountain path through myriad flowers to the summit of Loška to enjoy lunch with far reaching views to the Adriatic and Albania. Returning to Lunje we are taken to the old town of Stari Bar for refreshments before continuing to the hotel. 5 miles (8km) with 2,200 feet (660m) of ascent. Day 7: Rijeka Crnojevića and Lake Skadar Between Petrovac and the capital, Podgorica, to the east lies the National Park of Lake Skadar, a 6 Call 020 8732 1250 or visit hfholidays.co.uk huge wildlife reserve shared between Montenegro and Albania to the south. Surrounded on three sides by Montenegrin mountains, Skadar is one of the largest lakes in Europe with 40 different kinds of fish and 270 bird species. Both walks will explore this beautiful area and have the opportunity to enjoy a boat ride back to Virpazar before the coach journey to our hotel. Easier Walk: On this walk we explore almost deserted Poseljani down to the lake shore before following the river on a stony path passing waterfalls to rejoin the coach for lunch at the historic old bridge café in Rijeka Crnojevića. We then take our scenic boat ride down the river and across Lake Skadar with sightings of numerous birds almost certainly including the rare Dalmatian pelican. 3 miles (5km) with 400 feet (120m) of ascent. Harder Walk: After a brief exploration of Poseljani we ascend steeply on a little walked packhorse route to a high open space for lunch, passing old farmsteads as we descend through trees to rejoin the easier group. Our boat ride takes us to the lakeside community of Virpazar with all facilities prior to our return to the hotel. 6 miles (9½km) with 1,400 feet (420m) of ascent and 1,800 feet (540m) of descent. Day 8: Departure day In the evenings Our walking holidays continue into the evening. Enjoy a glass of wine or local beer whilst listening to your leaders outlining the next day s walks. At Petrovac, you will be able to listen to a local speaker who will talk to you about the fascinating local history and one evening you may like to join your group on an walk to the unique WW2 Operation Hydra tunnels.

WALKING INFORMATION Your Walking Leaders: HF Holidays leaders are a pivotal feature of our walking holidays. During the day they will guide you on the walks in a caring and considerate way, showing you places of interest on the route. All our leaders have been selected on an intensive residential course so you can relax and enjoy your holiday knowing that you are in safe hands. Our leaders welcome your comments on the holiday survey; constructive suggestions are very helpful. We take pride in the quality of our holidays and work closely with all our providers to ensure our holidays meet your expectations. If for any reason you are not satisfied our leaders are the best people to help. Local interest guides: In some of our resorts we may employ the services of a local interest guide who will accompany you on a walk to enhance your enjoyment of the area by giving you an insight into its history and culture. Tips for local guides have not been included in the price of your holiday. This is at your own discretion and we invite you to do this directly with the local guide. Maps: Your leaders will of course carry all the maps and detailed walk instructions needed for the walks. The maps available for this area are 1:100,000 scale and therefore do not detail many of the walking routes. Children: We welcome unaccompanied children of 14 or over on our walks on the basis that they can take full responsibility for themselves. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Call 020 8732 1250 or visit hfholidays.co.uk 7

WALKING SAFETY We are committed to running our Guided Walking holidays in a safe manner and your co-operation with this is much appreciated. No outdoor activity can be 100% risk free; however, if you take sensible precautions and adhere to your leaders instructions, your holiday will be both safe and enjoyable. On the first evening of your holiday (dependent on arrival time), the leaders will give a short talk about safety on the walks we would ask everyone to attend. Walking as a group: Our leaders always consider the safety of the group as a whole, and will show more caution over potential risks (such as bad or exceptionally hot weather) than an individual or couple might make on a private outing. Walks may be modified or cancelled following the leaders assessment of the day-to-day situation. Your leaders will refuse to accept any guest whose clothing, equipment, behaviour or walking ability is considered unsuitable, and where it could affect the safety and enjoyment of other guests on the proposed walk. It is your responsibility to follow the leader s guidelines, for the benefit and safety of the group as a whole. If you leave the group, then your leader will no longer have responsibility for you. For safety reasons, we stipulate a minimum party size of two guests in addition to the leader. First aid: In line with current practice, each leader carries a group first aid kit but is not able to supply any medication, including aspirin, paracetamol, antihistamines and antiseptic cream. Hydration: In warm weather it is very important to keep hydrated. You will need to carry water with you on walks, more during hot weather or on more demanding walks. One good way of hydrating is to use a hydration pack which allows drinking without constant stopping. This can then be filled up from water sources as required. Insurance: Insurance is a condition of booking. Therefore if you have not already arranged insurance, it is imperative that you do so, and advise us of the insurance company and policy number. Even with an EHIC card, medicines and out-patient treatment normally have to be paid for at the time and the costs reclaimed afterwards. Therefore insurance is extremely important, as is access to emergency money, preferably a credit card. In Montenegro, there are reciprocal healthcare agreements with the UK that allow free emergency treatment. In non urgent cases payment (normally in cash) may be required. Further details are available at dh.gov.uk/ travellers HOLIDAY TIPS Language: Montenegrin Currency: Euro Money: There are several ATM machines in Petrovac where you can obtain money. Electricity: 220 Volt AC with round two pin plugs; you will need an adaptor for any appliances brought from the UK. Tap water: Is considered safe to drink, but if you prefer, bottled mineral water can be purchased from the hotel or local supermarkets. Telephone code: If the international number you wish to call starts with a 0, you must drop the starting digit when dialling the number. To dial a UK number 0044 To dial a Montenegrin number 00382 8 Call 020 8732 1250 or visit hfholidays.co.uk

WHAT TO WEAR & BRING To enjoy your walking comfortably and safely, it is essential that your footwear, clothing and equipment are suitable for the conditions likely to be encountered. Please note that some of our Atlantic island and Mediterranean destinations are also in mountainous areas and at high altitudes (up to 4,000 feet) the temperatures can be as low as 0 C. You will need: comfortable outdoor clothing ankle supporting footwear with non-slip soles water bottle (at least 2 litres, more for hot climates) and a thermos flask if you wish sunhat, sun cream and sunglasses small rucksack The following are also recommended to all walkers, and are essential for mountainous and hilly areas: walking boots spare pullover or fleece hat and gloves spare high-energy food e.g. chocolate bar or Kendal mint cake torch You may also wish to consider bringing: camera personal first aid kit walking pole(s) many guests find these useful, particularly for descents FOOTWEAR We recommend wearing walking boots on all our walks, as these provide the best ankle support and grip. Modern approach shoes offer appropriate levels of grip and may be worn on some low level walks, but users should be aware that they offer less ankle support. Lightweight trainers, denim jeans and waterproof capes are not recommended for any walks. TRANSFER INFORMATION If you have booked your holiday with flight you will arrive at Dubrovnik Airport.
