Key Issues The Maldives: Latest reports indicate that 72 resorts are in operation,11 remain closed and are being renovated and 4 are still under construction; After 4 months of calendar year 2005, the international arrivals count remains at more than 50 down on the comparative period of 2004; Sri Lanka: Arrivals numbers to May show a comparative gain of +8.1; The mix of arrivals appears distinctly different however as hotel occupancy statistics show growth in Colombo city but significant losses in the Southern regions which is where much of the affected tourism plant is located; Thailand: International air arrivals to Bangkok for the Jan-May period are on a par with the Jan-May 2004 results at least in aggregate; Key issue is that traffic from the significant markets of China (PRC), Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong SAR and Korea (ROK) is well down. Collectively these markets make up one-quarter of total arrivals to Thailand; Accommodation statistics for Phuket show continuing losses. Air traffic data likewise shows significant softening; Scheduled air capacity for the remainder of the year to/from Phuket (HKT) looks soft with carriers from some of the major markets withdrawing completely (for how long is unknown).
