State of the Lake/ État du Lac
State of the Lake / État du Lac Clarity of the water (Secci Disk) readings for 2011-14 slightly better than 2007 and 2009, though not quite as good as 2008 (treatment) and 2010. No algae blooms have been observed, but more warm, calm days are yet to come. Phosphorus levels trending at around 16 µg/l, with higher values in the fall, then falling to lower levels by early summer.
Évolution des Quantités de Phosphore aux brassages Printanier et Automnal
Historic Lake Phosphorous Levels
Concentration Moyenne En Phosphore Totale/ Total Average Phosphorous Concentration
State of the Lake / État du Lac (cont d) Oxygen levels in the deeper parts of the lake continue to slowly improve so that there may well be areas where the grey trout (touladi) can survive! Some of the iron added in 2007 is being depleted and buried in the sediment. Phosphorous inputs must be kept to a minimum, to prevent accelerated aging of the lake. Ongoing vigilance in protecting our shorelines is of high importance.
Phosphate Control/Le Contrôle des Phosphates
What is Phosphate? A mineral found in rocks and soils A powerful nutrient for land or water based plants A powerful cleaning agent
PHOSPHATE in LAKES = ALGAE GROWTH
Why is (excess) algae bad? 1. In excess, algae disrupts the normal lake ecosystem [ Decreased water transparency 2. Algae blooms can form including possible poisonous cyanobacteria variety [ Odours from water 3. Decomposing algae reduces oxygen levels [ Detrimental effects on desirable fish species PHOSPHATE is THE LIMITING FACTOR
PHOSPHATE SOURCES Detergents & Soaps Cleaners (Tri-Sodium Phosphate) Lawn and Garden Fertilizers Firepit Ash Human and Animal waste Decaying plant/tree matter Septic Tank Leachate
2,500 Kgs of phosphate
+350 kgs Kgs of phosphate added per year?
PHOSPHATE PRODUCTION FROM COTTAGERS: 3 grams/person/day average X family of 4 X 100 days/yr (weekend use) = 1.2 kg phosphate/year X 375 cottages = a need for vigilance!
WHAT ACTIONS CAN WE TAKE? Reduce/eliminate phosphates Use phosphate free alternatives Avoid aggressive cleaners particularly TSP Avoid lawn and garden fertilizers Prevent shoreline erosion - Create a natural shoreline Bring any plant/tree cuttings away from shoreline
PHOSPHATE FREE EXISTS
WHAT ADDITIONAL ACTIONS CAN WE TAKE? Ensure your septic system is in proper working order Be informed - Visit our website Share your knowledge with fellow cottagers Alert APLH with your concerns Volunteer (high school volunteer hours applicable) Consider being a Bay Captain
