Bulletin No 12 September 14 2017 In this Bulletin: Pages 2, 3, 4,5. More Club photos, Board Annoucements, & upcoming events Birthdays this coming week: Guest Speaker Tony Todd Tony provided us with some information about his working life and in particular some of the projects he was involved with in Asia. Tony started as an engineering surveyor but after several years in this area, and after having a serious car accident he decided new direction was required. A friend introduced him to the field of warehousing and logistics. Tony then moved into this area. He went to Germany to train in high rise crane storage, and later Detroit to see the mechanised process which provided bumper bars to Ford cars in the U.S. Tony worked for John David Holdings in Transport Distribution. After working initially on some projects in Australia he moved to Singapore to develop a grocery distribution centre. He then went to K.L. to work on a similar project. He enjoyed the time there and was given a team of workers including some immigrants from Bangladesh who were loyal, hard working individuals. A number of the workers were poor and lived on he banks of the Klang River which periodically flooded. When their houses were destroyed Tony ensured he had a supply of corrugated iron in storage which he could deliver to them to rebuild immediately. There were a number of challenges working in Asia. He sadly regularly lost employees in the line of work transporting goods between Singapore, Thailand and K.L. He was kidnapped himself at one point. The warehouse needed a special ceremony involving a goat and a priest to clear evil spirits from the area. The main difficulty later was convincing a large multinational company to reimburse him for the costs involved. Tony worked for Australia Post after that, but moved to Beijing to set up a distribution system for the Chinese government s postal service. Company s such as Myers or David Jones ordered outfits which were made in China and they were packed into the container for shipment to the individual shops, already on the coat hangers with labels ready to hang straight out on the rack when they arrived. Tony mentioned his involvement in Australia of setting up a Freezer- Chiller distribution centre for Coles in Erskine Park, Sydney. It size is colossal at about 3 to 4 acres and it has seperate chicken and meat sections. The workers on each part never meet. Sadly for us, tours are not available to make a vocational visit to the site some time. A really interesting talk which all present did enjoy. Bulletin No 12 September 14 2017 Page 2 Presidents information The Board approved that the invitation be extended to Norm Costello and John Shaw to become Honorary members of the club. Audit of 2016-2017 is progressing and will be prepared by Addison partners. The club will improve its profile with Facebook events, thanks to Chelsea for her expertise in this area. Community Service Director Chris mentioned the golf day was proceeding well with sponsorship and auction items organised. Hopefully most things will be finalised by next week. Pres. Kathy will be on Pt Stephens FM at 11am this Tuesday to promote the day.. Catering at Salt Ash horse events to support Williamtown Rotary Club commenced last week. This proved to be a busy and profitable day. Some finances will come to our club, however the main benefit will be to allow Rotary to continue to cater at the event. Further dates are on our calendar and about 4 people are needed each time. PDG Don outlined the Science & Engineering Discovery day to be held at Tomaree High School next Thursday 21st. A great day for year 6 students from schools around the entire area is organised by the University of Newcastle. We are the only area outside of Newcastle itself to have the program. Don has now organised volunteers for the day. The day on the bay for children from St Dominic s School will occur on the 31st of October. They will be taken out aboard the Moonshadow boat and then return to the Foreshore for lunch. There should be about 18 students plus the teaching staff involved. Foundation director John mentioned the upcoming Foundation night the 9th of November The plan is to present an immortal pin to non Rotarians who have done something to benefit our community, or have helped our club, or Rotary in the past. A great suggestion from Mike Ryan our District Governor s partner. Please email any nominations to John Cropley or let me know at a meeting.
