Message from the Governor of Fukushima Prefecture Support Messages On behalf of all citizens of Fukushima Prefecture, let me express my heartfelt gratitude for the great support, cooperation and encouragement you have extended to us from around the world since our prefecture was severely stricken by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. We, residents of Fukushima Prefecture, have been deeply impressed and encouraged by athletes from various parts of the world competing in games with pride in their countries. We would like to turn such excitement and courage to momentum to open up the future of Fukushima. At the same time, we would like to take the opportunity of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 the tenth-year milestone from the disaster to show to people around the world that Fukushima is vigorously advancing towards recovery from the disaster. We sincerely await your visit to Fukushima and we guarantee with full confidence that your delegations athletes and officials alike can enjoy your stay with us totally free of worry. We assure you that you will receive our heartiest hospitality and the best possible support while staying in Fukushima, a land blessed with a superb natural environment. This, in turn, will allow you to meet the challenges of your competitive events in the highest level of fitness both physical and mental. Ms. Yuko Arimori Olympic medalist I d like Athletes from around the world to give children in Fukushima dreams. Profile highlights Silver medalist, Barcelona 1992 Olympic Women s Marathon Bronze medalist, Atlanta 1996 Olympic Women s Marathon Honored in 2010 with IOC Women and Sport Awards for the first time as a Japanese Current positions: Specified NPO Hearts of Gold Founder and Representative Director; President & CEO, Special Olympics Nippon Foundation; Director, Japan Professional Football League; Health Ambassador appointed by Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare; Visiting Professor, Shujitsu University; Visiting Professor, Nippon Sport Science University; Shakunage Ambassador for Fukushima Prefecture, among other positions It is true that Fukushima Prefecture still faces some problems remaining in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. However, I now feel significant improvements have been made in addressing these problems thanks to progressive thinking and positive actions taken by the residents of Fukushima and so many other people. 2012 Special Olympics held in Fukushima has impressed us with warm hospitality and superb nature, remaining fresh in our minds. I wish athletes in the world will visit Fukushima and give children dreams and hope on the occasion of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Mr. Takeshi Suzuki [From Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Pref.] Paralympic medalist Profile highlights Participant in Torino 2006 Paralympics, competing in four events including Alpine Skiing Men s Downhill Sitting Bronze medalist, Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Alpine Skiing Men s Giant Slalom Gold medalist for Alpine Skiing Men s Slalom Sitting and Bronze medalist for Downhill Sitting in Sochi 2014 Paralympics Silver medalist, IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup 2011/12 Men s Sitting Overall Gold medalist, IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup 2012/13 Men s Sitting Overall In 2014, honored with Fukushima Prefectural Honor Award and Medal with Purple Ribbon Current positions: Employee of KYB Corporation C O N T E N T S Message from the Governor of Fukushima Prefecture 1 Support Messages 2 Introduction of Fukushima Prefecture 3 Access to Fukushima Prefecture 5 Map of Candidate Host Municipalities 7 List of Candidate Host Municipalities by Type of Sport 8 Supplementary Note 9 Introduction of Training Facilities Naka-dori Region 10 Aizu Region 22 Hama-dori Region 27 Masao Uchibori Governor of Fukushima Prefecture We look forward to hosting you. I d like as many people as possible to visit Fukushima and enjoy its attractions. The years following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 saw a succession of gloomy news. It was under such circumstances that I devoted myself to training toward the 2014 Sochi Paralympics, wishing to deliver bright, encouraging news to the people in my homeland, Fukushima. In the world there still seem to be those who even now think Fukushima is as dangerous a place to visit or live as in the days immediately after the nuclear power plant accident. This is simply not true. Except for only a few areas, Fukushima today is a safe place, where local people are living normal daily lives exactly the same way as they used to in the pre-disaster days. At the 2010 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, I wish many people to visit Fukushima and see things firsthand and realize that Fukushima is now safe and sound. I would also like athletes visiting here to fully enjoy superb nature, food and history as well as training.
