compass camp The Bible-centred camp in the heart of the Lake District 3rd - 10th August Coniston Sports & Social Centre, Coniston
Welcome to Compass Camp, the Bible-centred summer camp based in the heart of the Lake District. So what s it all about? Well, since 1975 loads of young people have been studying one incredible book, having crazy amounts of fun, learning awesome truths, enjoying plenty of food, being served by passionate leaders, engaging with stretching questions and making great friends! At camp a variety of activities are on offer all led by qualified experts. One day you might be climbing the rock face of the surrounding mountains, the next scrabbling up a flowing river only to plunge back down into the pools of water! At Coniston Sports & Social Centre we enjoy the full facilities of the centre. The main link throughout the history of camp though has been a passion to see young people s lives transformed through the teaching of God s Word from the Bible so that they might love and live for Jesus. At camp we seek to love Jesus, love people, and love life. We hope to see you there this summer! Matthew Prescott Compass Camp leader Camping: Compass Camp is an outdoor camp based in Coniston. We use Coniston Sports & Social Centre camping on the playing field and the centre facilities for washing, dining and meetings. Campers are grouped into tents of 5-8 young people of a similar age each with an adult tent leader. Camping at Coniston 2 facebook.com/compasschristiancamps
Teaching Programme The main aim of camp is for young people to experience and encounter Jesus so that they genuinely know God. We believe that when God s Word is preached, taught and read, people s lives can change through the power of the Holy Spirit. This is why camp each day contains a main talk and small group Bible studies. We encourage young people to explore and think through the topics themselves. All leaders are baptised believers serving God in a local church, so whether leading the morning meeting, a Bible study or just helping out, the team is happy to discuss and explain any questions that may come up. Main talks: Each camp we unwrap a passage or theme from God s word in the morning meetings. The teaching theme is prepared and presented by experienced Bible teachers but led in an informal way. Usually there are two or three speakers throughout the week each with a different style engaging the young people in different ways. The meetings start with a time of worship and prayer and include a short testimony, book plug or lesson. Small Group Bible Studies - Tent Prayers : In the evenings the campers meet in their tent groups for a Bible study led by their tent leader. Tent prayers provide the opportunity for campers to ask questions in a relaxed setting, get to grips with and dig deeper into God s Word. instagram.com/compasscamps 3
Camp Activities and Themes Activities: Each afternoon we run a number of outdoor activities and games. The fees include 3 days of adventure activities led by Climb 365, an experienced, Christian-run mountaineering company and member of AMI and AALA. The activity programme varies each year but we always aim to have a lot of fun and challenge the campers whilst enjoying God s beautiful creation. Past activities have included gorge scrambling, kayaking and canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling and mountain scrambling. Gorge Scrambling Rock climbing Kayaking and Canoeing The rest of the week we run our own activities. Camp starts with games designed to introduce the campers in each tent group to each other and familiarise themselves with the camp facilities and surroundings. On Sunday, after meeting with a local church, we go to a nearby beach for lunch and beach games. During the week there s a camp walk and on Friday campers have some time to shop in Ambleside. Themes: Each year camp has a theme. Throughout the week there are games and challenges inspired by the theme. The centre is decorated to create a fun environment for the campers. The week always closes with a big event on the Friday night where campers and leaders alike can let their hair down and play some silly games, maybe even dress up in a costume. Of course we end on a serious note as we review camp, award those who have achieved through the week and sum up the teaching with a final challenge. www.compasscamps.org 5
