Swatton, B.Eng (Hons) 9 th May 2016 JCH Dear Parent/Guardian, YEAR 9 CAMP MONDAY 11 th JULY FRIDAY 15 th JULY 2016 With the Year 9 camp only 6 weeks away, here are some practical details that will help you and your child prepare for the week at Blackland Farm. The following is a good guide to the items that should be taken to camp: Kit Tick Kit Tick Rucksack/holdall (*) Tea towel Small day rucksack (**) Water bottle Sleeping bag Plate, bowl and Mug (unbreakable) Camping mat/blanket (for insulation under the sleeping bag) Pair of boots / shoes that are comfortable and robust for walking in Trainers Head torch / torch and spare batteries Pair of old shoes for kayaking (not flip flops) (***) Wellington boots Plenty of layers for night time Towels x 2 (Shower & kayaking) A waterproof coat must be taken Swimwear (kayaking) Knife / fork / spoon Sets of clothing that can be used for diverse outdoor activities, including walking such as tracksuit bottoms, shorts, old trousers, sweatshirt/jumper. Wash kit Spending money ( 10 will be sufficient) Sunhat Sun Cream Insect Repellent Carrier Bags for dirty/wet washing *Items should be transported to and from camp in a collapsible bag NOT a suitcase as the bag will have to be stored in the tent throughout the week. Here space is at a premium. **A small day rucksack will be useful to carry small items to and from activities. *** Please ensure that these are old trainers and not your only pair as they may not dry in time to be worn as main trainers throughout the week Remember it may be very hot and it may be quite wet and cold and the clothes taken will have to cater for all eventualities.
KIT If the provision of a sleeping bag or a waterproof coat is a real problem, please ask your son / daughter to see me. Accommodation is under canvas in 'patrol' type tents. I am aware that some pupils will have access to their own tents. If your son / daughter would like to do this, please ensure that they see me immediately. Please note large frame tents are not appropriate. If your son/daughter is bringing their own tent, please ensure that they know how to put it up, that all parts are there and please also explain to them that the tent is their responsibility. FOOD In addition to the above items, pupils should bring a packed lunch for Monday (no other food will be available at this time). The first cooked meal will be provided on Monday at about 7.00 p.m. Every attempt will be made to supervise our campsite at all times, but tents are by their nature insecure and there will be other school parties on adjoining sites. It is, therefore, essential that pupils do not bring valuable electronic items (ipods, handheld devices) that would be left in their tents unattended. Mobile phones are not allowed on camp for this reason and because they detract from the type of experience which camp is. School rules still apply and anyone seen with a phone will have it confiscated until the end of the camp. If your son / daughter need to contact home then they can by using the school mobile. If your child has any medical condition, including the regular taking of prescribed medicines, that should be brought to the attention of the teachers supervising the camp, I would be very grateful if you would let them know as soon as possible. Please complete the emergency medical forms giving details of any special medical, dietary or other conditions including prescribed medicines that should be brought to our attention. Please return the medical consent form to the PSA Box as soon as possible. The analgesics form along with medication should be handed in during the week prior to departure. TIMING & ADDRESS OF CAMP We will leave Claverham soon after 9.00 a.m. on Monday 11 th July 2016 and return at approximately 2.30 p.m. on Friday 15 th July 2016 at which time the pupils can go home. Please ensure your son/daughter has made the necessary transport arrangements. Our address will be: Blackland Farm, East Grinstead, West Sussex, RH19 4HP Telephone : 01342 810493 or 07860 393026 The telephone numbers will enable you to contact the Warden or Office and should be used only in an emergency.
