Now in its seventh year, the festival that started out as a private dinner catered by an Italian chef has grown into a celebration of all that is wine, food, music, family and community, coloured by the enthusiasm associated with the Italians enjoyment of these things. Starting at the Passport Offi ce in the main street of the village of Broke, visitors receive their passport and begin their journey. creative arts Blue Heeler Film Festival By Sophie Fitzgerald During the April School Holidays, Muswellbrook s debut festival will be held over four days as movie-makers of all ages compete for a place at the fi nal. The event was originally brought to the table as a part-solution to the demands of a cinema in town. The festival, not only screens the competition entries, but a number of classic movies as well. The initiative gets those of all ages involved and is a great activity for the community to attend or get involved in. Highbrook Park will stage the junior short fi lms as well as Disney Pixar movie, Brave on Sunday 14 April. Wednesday, 17 April will see the Senior Films at the Regional Arts Centre, along with Moonrise Kingdom. Rock of Ages and Priscilla will be the supporting acts of the Open Short Film section of the festival at the Muswellbrook Race Club on the 19 April. The anticipated fi nals will occur at Two Rivers Wines in Denman, as four fi nalists will screen their fi lms in battle for the Bluey or fi rst Place. Finals will be held on the 21 April, accompanied by classic movie, The Castle. Entry deadlines were just over a week ago, the entries said to be quite impressive, some controversial but all raising the stakes of competition. It is hoped that the debut will set a high bar for the following years. Muswellbrook s councillor Malcolm Ogg said, I think it s a fantastic idea, particularly being over the school holidays, the fact that we are holding it at a range of locations - as long as the weather is kind to us, it should be a very enjoyable time. what s on Russian Journey at The Putty The Sydney Balalaika Orchestra will once again crowd onto the Putty Hall stage to perform on Saturday 13 April. Local Putty resident Martha Babineau, playing the domra, is one of twenty eight performers in the orchestra. Sydney Balalaika Orchestra with its traditional folk instruments and costumes takes audiences on an unforgettable journey to the heart and soul of Russia. Musical Director Victor Serghie s and cimbalom player Lucy Voronov s arrangements of classic Russian folk songs and orchestral pieces are simply breathtaking in their beauty, power and expression. Inspired by Serghie s free and easy banter which builds a bridge of friendship between the performers and the audience, the twenty plus orchestra and singers are an eclectic mixture of many cultures (Armenian, Australian, Belorussian, Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, Irish, Russian, Scottish, Serbian and Ukrainian) united by their passion for the true Russian folk music several soloists are acknowledged virtuosos on their instruments. Along with regular performances in and around Sydney, the Orchestra has performed in association with Musica Viva, at many major folk music festivals, tours interstate and has performed by invitation in China and in Russia on three occasions, most recently in Moscow and St Petersburg in July 2011. Sydney Balalaika Orchestra released its fi rst CD Old Linden Tree which proved to be an outstanding success. This led to a contract with Radio ABC to release the CD under ABC Classics label. Their second CD, Mail Troika was released in 2004 followed by Dawn of Russia in June 2007 and the fourth CD Rassipuha In May 2010. the equine trend & more. Parvovirus Outbreak in the Upper Hunter By Peta Gay Railton - Pet Medical Parvovirus has been a serious problem this year and, to date, Pet Medical has seen over one hundred cases of suspect Parvovirus. This recent virus is extremely vicious and several puppies and older unvaccinated dogs have died. We can easily halt the spread of this disease; we just need to get serious about the vaccination. Vaccination facts: Puppies need an initial course of three vaccinations. Many of the affected puppies we are seeing have had only one vaccination at six to eight weeks and owners have assumed that this is all they need. A single puppy vaccination will not provide lasting immunity against the disease. Once a dog is over sixteen weeks of age a single vaccination will provide immunity for twelve months. Dogs need to be revaccinated every year unless a three year vaccination is used. Treating parvovirus requires a huge amount of dedication from the vets and nurses. Those affected become severely dehydrated and depressed. They vomit and pass large quantities of bloody diarrhoea. About ten percent of affected animals will die regardless of treatment and this fi gure can be higher in young puppies. Most Horse Festival News Update We are four weeks away from the 2013 Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival. It is the last chance to send in a pony club photo that predates 2000. Photos are coming in, but we need more. Merriwa Pony Club put a book together in the mid 1990 s yet no other photographic record seems to exist for local pony clubs. After the exhibition the photographs will be archived at the Scone Historical Museum. The photographs taken by Joseph Docker gave a fascinating insight to life in this region during the 19th Century. I am hoping that this exhibition will give people an insight into pony clubs in the 20th century. The Scone Advocate is happy to scan your photos and send them to me. It s not too late to send in your nomination for the VIP of the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival for 2013. A coupon is provided in this week s issue of the Scone Advocate. This is a chance to recognise someone who has dedicated their life to horses and deserves to be recognised by the community. Don t forget parade entry forms are available online and at the Scone Visitor and Information Centre. Time to start thinking about how to dress up for the theme A Horse, My Kingdom for a Horse! Festival programmes and bumper stickers are out and about. Anne Davies - President untreated animals will die. The animals are nursed in an isolation unit and treatment is expensive, sometimes costing over $1000 in severe cases. The virus will survive in the environment for over a year and people walk it around on their shoes and clothing spreading it to other dogs - And all this is preventable with a vaccination. To combat this problem Pet Medical is offering $30 vaccinations at Muswellbrook from Monday 8 April to Saturday 13 April between 11am and 2pm every day - no appointment is necessary. Please, we can get this disease out of this area. If you know of anyone who has unvaccinated dogs, encourage them to vaccinate. Spread the word. Don t hesitate. VACCINATE! Please help us end parvo! Half-price parvo vaccinations April 8-13. Between 11am 2pm every day Our Muswellbrook hospital will offer half-price vaccinations (only $30) pet medical Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. leisure & lifestyle How to Plan Your Rose Garden with Aberdeen Nursery Now is the perfect time to start planning your rose garden. You might choose to plant just one or two roses, perhaps with a favourite fl ower colour or perfume, or you can create an entire rose garden using different types of roses. When you design your rose garden, you can consider using just one or two varieties among other plants or you can go crazy and create a specialist garden divided by paths. You may also want to include a focal point such as an archway or birdbath. With thousands of rose varieties around, you need to consider certain criteria when choosing a good one. Colour: Roses can be everything from deep purple to pure white. Shape: Consider whether you want singles or doubles, and fl owers for picking or fl owers in the garden. Scent: Old fashioned roses generally have a stronger scent. Size and habit: How much room do you have for the rose to grow? Do you want a compact bush rose, a formal standard rose or a sprawling old fashioned roes or a climber? Maintenance: Does the rose need frequent spraying, especially for black spot? What are the pruning requirements? For the home gardener, the most useful classifi cation is based on size and habit. These are relevant to main groupings: Miniatures: Good for pots, garden edges and fi lling gaps in garden beds. Groundcovers: Low growing roses with long, trailing stems, often grown in mass plantings and useful for covering banks. Shrub roses: The most popular group, also called bush roses, includes the fl oribundas and hybrid teas. These look fantastic as feature specimens in large containers. Climbers: These require support and training. Some varieties are very vigorous and will cover walls, while less vigorous can be trained over arches and up pillars. Standards: These are either shrub or bush roses grafted onto a long stalk. Creating a Rose Garden. 1. Find a spot in full sun with enough room for the bush roses to spread. A bush rose needs at least one metre diameter. 2. Prepare the soil now dig over the bed, remove all weeds, dig in compost and manure. 3. Decide what rose you want. 4. At planting time, keep the roots moist and plant out as soon as you can. Don t feed the rose until spring when the shoots are growing rapidly. local gig guide Two Rising Stars on the Country Music Scene By Laura Sykes The Muswellbrook District Worker s Club will play host on Friday 5 April to two of the brightest young stars rising in the country music industry. Hannah Smith and Georgia White have strong roots in the country music business. As two of four members of the band The Apprentices, put together by Gina Jeffery s recording-husband Rod McCormack, both girls have worked with a variety of big name artists, including Jeffreys, The McClymonts, McAlister Kemp and Amber Lawrence. One of Georgia s most memorable moments was in 2010 when she was asked to perform as a supporting act for Kenny Rogers, one of the biggest names in American country music, singing to 5,000 people in Tamworth during the show. At CMC Rocks the Hunter 2013 performing with McAlister Kemp, Hannah was thrilled to perform to over 20,000 people, a moment she will never forget. Busy schedules both as solo artists and band members keep the girls on their toes.
