THROUGH THE HEART OF NEW ENGLAND Witches, autumnal colours and stunning mountain views, plus a glimpse of Canada's Montreal... Tour Code: 44650 Grade 4 Holiday Duration: 13 days HOLIDAY DATES 15th Sept 2018-27th Sept 2018, 23rd Sept 2018-5th Oct 2018 Boasting rivers, forests, lakes and mountain ranges, this holiday offers exceptional scenery as well as an insight into the quirky town of Salem, famed for its witch trials. HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS Boston s Freedom Trail as good a city walking tour as you will find anywhere. Walking the twin peaks of Sugarloaf Mountain from Bretton Woods for fantastic views of Mount Washington. A stroll through Stowe village, small town New England encapsulated. Jay Peak. The views across thousands of sugar maple trees burning red in the autumn sunshine.

THROUGH THE HEART OF NEW ENGLAND Experience the dazzling fall colours of New England in the best possible way, on foot. Whether following the historic Freedom Trail through the best of Boston or traversing the slopes of Mount Washington, colour follows you everywhere. You walk a section of the Appalachian Trail and you won't believe the views from the Jay Peak summit thousands of sugar maple trees burning red in the autumn sunshine. This Grade 4 moderate holiday includes full and half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain and is likely to include an element of sightseeing as well. Half day walking will probably include about 3 hours of walking, with full days having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to about 600m. See the Walks & Excursions section for more information. We start in the small and friendly town of Salem, infamous for its 17th century witch trials. From here we take a short train ride into Boston for the day and walk the Freedom Trail tracing the city's history from Puritans to the present day. Heading into New Hampshire and Bretton Woods we can walk on the Appalachian or Mount Willard Trail to take the easy ascent up Mount Willard for excellent views. We can also spend time on the slopes of Sugarloaf Mountain or possibly Mount Washington, the highest peak in the eastern US. We walk the last short stretch of the way to our next hotel in Stowe, Vermont, stopping in an idyllic riverside spot for lunch. Possibilities here include exploring the Von Trapp's family estate in Stowe and following the Sterling Pond Trail. Bigger walks up Mount Mansfield or Stowe Pinnacle are possible on a free day. Our final centre is at Jay Peak, close to the Canadian border. We can use the tram' to reach Jay Peak summit. Here a local guide helps out, so we can offer a choice of easier and harder walks. On our final day we cross into Canada, visiting the old quarter of Montreal on the way to the airport. Starting in the south and working our way north, whichever date you choose to travel should enable you to see the fall colours at their peak in at least one of the centres. Some of the walks will be at the top end of the grade, particularly in Bretton Woods. WHATS INCLUDED Return flights from Heathrow to Boston returning Montreal to Heathrow (British Airways) Airport transfers B&B en suite accommodation Transfers between centres Eight dinners All local transport costs. HOLIDAY GRADE

Proposed Itinerary Whilst every effort will be made to adhere to the outlined itinerary and advertised programme, local conditions can change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. This may mean that routes and timings need to be amended or the order of days may change, sometimes at short notice. Key to Meals: B - Breakfast, L - Lunch, D - Dinner. In flight meals, if appropriate, will be advised in your final travel documents Day: 1 - Salem (No Meals) We fly to Boston and arrive in the afternoon. We have a short transfer to the historic town of Salem, famed for its witch trails in 1692 dramatised by Arthur Miller in The Crucible. There should be time for a stroll around on arrival. Day: 2 - Salem (B,D) We visit Boston for a full day in this fascinating city so important to Americans as the starting place of the American Revolution. We will explore the Freedom Trail on foot along with myriad other delights. Day: 3 - Bretton Woods (B,D) We now leave Massachusetts and head towards New Hampshire and the White Mountains. We stay at Bretton Woods beneath Mount Washington, at 6288 ft the highest peak in the range. En route we stop at the Canterbury Shaker Village (entrance not included) for those who would like to gain some insight into this fascinating culture. We should arrive in Bretton Woods early afternoon. We stay at the Mount Washington Resort. The nearby, historic Mont Washington Hotel hosted the meeting of world leaders in 1944 that led to the formation of the IMF and the World Bank. It is an impressive building. The hotel offers free guided tours most afternoons. Hopefully we will arrive early enough to join one. Day: 4 - Bretton Woods (B,D) Today we have a short walk around Sugarloaf Mountain. It s about 4 miles with 900ft of ascent and descent and takes the morning. It offers some great views of the surrounding mountains. We will offer a walk around Bretton Woods ski area in the afternoon. Day: 5 - Bretton Woods (B,D) Today is another walking day taking in Mt Willard and the Mt Washington estate. We walk back to the hotel. The distance is approx 8 miles depending on the route taken and might take 3½ hours. Day: 6 - Stowe (B,D) Moving on we transfer to Stowe via the state capital of Vermont, Montpelier (pronounced Mont-PEEL-ear ) where we can have a quick look around the capital building. On arrival in Stowe we have a short walk to get the feel of this quintessential New England town. Day: 7 - Stowe (B) Today we walk around Stowe taking in the Von Trapp Estate made famous by the film The Sound of Music. The walk of approx 7.5 miles is generally on flat terrain. Day: 8 - Stowe (B) A free day for personal exploration(there is plenty to occupy you in and around Stowe, including the Ben and Jerry s Ice Cream factory!). Day: 9 - Jay Peak (B,D) We transfer north again towards the Canadian border to Jay Peak ski resort. We will stop on the way for a quick gorge walk and plan to arrive at Jay Peak for lunch. We will walk to Beaver Pond in the afternoon. Day: 10 - Jay Peak (B,D) Today s walk to Jay Peak summit is at the top of the grade and easier options are available for those who prefer. Our RWH leader will clarify all the options the night before. Day: 11 - Jay Peak (B,D) A lovely walk from Lake Willoughby to the summit of Mt Pisgah. The walk is about 5 miles and climbs 1500ft on generally good trails. Day: 12 - In flight (B) Transfer to Montreal for a short sightseeing visit and before our transfer to Montreal airport for the return overnight flight to the UK. Day: 13 - N/A (No Meals) Arrive UK. Walks & Excursions This holiday is graded 4/L (a couple of walks are at the top end of grade 4 due to the terrain some

paths can be slippery with leaves and there may be uneven tree roots). Our programme explores the resorts and countryside at an unrushed pace, with walking of generally less than 5 hours each day. We climb as much as 500 metres on a few days (though many involve considerably less), over moderate terrain which is not too steep or rough underfoot. On several days, the walking and sightseeing programmes are combined to give a varied day out. We use many local trails, tracks leading us to lakes and waterfalls, through woods and to some magnificent viewpoints. Please note that this region of the United States is largely tree covered (which is why it is so beautiful in the fall), and on our walks we explore the varied nature of this particular landscape. Optional Excursions A range of local excursions and activities may be available to book at your destination through a local operator. We have no involvement in such activities or excursions which are not run, supervised or controlled in any way by us. Your contract will be with the local activity supplier and we accept no responsibility for their actions or omissions. things and have a wonderful holiday. Travel Details London Heathrow to Boston and return from Montreal to London Heathrow with British Airways Arrival transfer by road is approximately 1 hour Transport within the United States will mainly be by coach, ferry and possibly train. Smaller vehicles may be used in conjunction with the walking programme. Public transport will be used in Boston for the city sightseeing programmes. For all those booking a flight or rail inclusive holiday, details of your travel arrangements and baggage allowance will be confirmed in your travel documents, sent to you approximately 10 days prior to departure. Personal Details Check When confirming your booking, we provide you with a Personal Details Check form. This is to ensure that we have an accurate record of the information you have provided us such as your passport details (if relevant), date of birth and any other important detail necessary for us to properly manage your holiday arrangements. When you receive this, please check the details, complete any missing or pertinent information and return it to us as soon as possible. Land Only If you are joining and leaving at your holiday overseas we assume, unless you advise us otherwise, that you will join and leave the holiday from your hotel. Although airport transfers are not included for those making their own independent travel arrangements, if you wish to join the group at the overseas airport, depending on your flight arrival time, you may be able to be included on the group's transfer. Please contact us at least 5 weeks before departure for more details. Please note that your flight must arrive within 30 minutes of the group flight to be able to join the group transfer. We also need your flight number, arrival time and departure point so that the group leader is able to meet up with you. If you wish to organise your own flights from a non- UK or provincial airport or travel by rail or car to your holiday destination, 'no-travel' reductions are often available. Please contact us for details. Before finalising any independent travel arrangements, please check with us first - especially if doing so 12 weeks or more before your intended date of travel. If you do intend to join your holiday locally please do tell us at least 14 weeks in advance. Passports and Visas Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. You don't need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this. The VWP (Visa Waiver Programme) allows most British Citizen passport holders to visit the US for up to 90 days. The types of journey allowed under the VWP include tourism, certain types of business visit and transit to another country. All travellers wishing to enter the US under the VWP now need to hold a passport with an integrated chip (an epassport). Your passport is an epassport if it carries the internationally recognised e-passport symbol on the front cover. You won't qualify for entry to the USA under the VWP, and will need to apply for a visa from the nearest US Embassy or Consulate, if: - you have a British passport that describes your nationality as something other than British Citizen' - you've been arrested for certain crimes, even if it didn't result in a criminal conviction - you're a dual national of Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria - you've travelled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011

Certain exemptions apply on a case-by-case basis to those who have travelled to Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen since March 2011. For more information about these exemptions, see the website of the US Embassy. If you are in any doubt about whether you qualify for the VWP, or if you're concerned that an existing ESTA may have been cancelled, you should contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate. Those travelling under the VWP arriving by air or sea should provide details online at least 72 hours before travel. This is known as an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation or ESTA. For more information, and to apply online, visit the official ESTA website (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta). If you're arriving by land, you don't need to complete an ESTA before you arrive at the border. Getting an ESTA is a separate process to providing your airline with advance passenger information (details of your passport, country of residence, address of your first night's accommodation in the US etc). The VWP is intended to be used for occasional, short visits to the US. If a US immigration officer thinks you're trying to reset' the clock by making a short trip out of the US and re-entering for another 90- day period, you can be denied entry. If you travel from the US to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean you can usually re-enter using the ESTA and admission stamp you were issued when you first arrived in the US, although the time you spend outside of the country is included in the 90 days allotted for your visit. Make sure you're clear about the length of time the immigration officer has authorised you to remain in the US if you re-enter under the same ESTA. When you arrive in the USA you will need to be able to show that you have enough funds available to support yourself during your stay, even if you're staying with family and friends. Further details on the VWP and other aspects of US immigration rules are available from the Customs and Border Protection website. The US Customs and Border Protection programme Global Entry gets pre-approved travellers through border control faster at some US airports. If you're a British citizen you can now register to get a UK background check on GOV.UK. If you pass the background checks, you'll be invited to apply for Global Entry. longer period, check entry requirements with the Canadian High Commission. When you arrive you will need to be able to show that you have enough funds available to support yourself during your stay. Under Canada's Electronic Travel Authorization (eta) program, citizens from countries other than the United States (U.S.) who do not need a visa to enter Canada, will need to obtain an online authorization before flying to Canada, unless otherwise exempted. THE ETA IS ONLY CURRENTLY REQUIRED IF YOU ARE FLYING INTO CANADA - IF YOU ARE ARRIVING OVERLAND THEN IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT. Canada is making every effort to ensure that eta does not greatly inconvenience affected travellers. The application process will be quick and easy at a low cost of only $7 Canadian dollars and will be valid for up to five years. The earlier travellers get their eta, the sooner they will benefit from knowing whether they have been pre-screened to enter Canada. eta is a convenient authorization that is electronically linked to a traveller's passport, which means travellers will need to travel with the same passport they used when they applied for and obtained their eta. To find out more, visit Canada.ca/eta. Please ensure that you have completed the eta form online. General Passport & Visa Advice It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to your home country. Passport and visa requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements. General travel and destination advice for UK nationals is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at www.fco.gov.uk/travel and at www.gov.uk/travelaware. Travelling with under 18s. Please note that some countries require evidence of parental consent when travelling with those under the age of 18. Please check if there are any applicable requirements with the relevant embassy or consular office well in advance of your holiday. British Citizens don't usually need a visa to visit Canada for short periods. If you have a different type of British nationality or intend to travel for a

Footwear Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded rubber sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks. If you are an experienced walker with strong ankles a good quality pair of trail or approach shoes may well be suitable for some walks. We recommend that you either wear your walking boots or shoes or pack them and some waterproofs in your hand luggage as in the unlikely event that your hold luggage is delayed, you will still be able to participate in the holiday programme. Kit List Outdoor activities are always more enjoyable if you are prepared. The following list is a basic guideline that will enhance your experience. Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. A basic kit list is likely to include: - Waterproof jacket (Goretex or similar) and trousers - Lightweight, quick drying trousers - Several polo shirts, T-shirts or specialist walking shirts - Fleece jacket - Comfortable walking socks - Warm hat and gloves (if appropriate) - Sun hat, sunglasses, lip salve and high SPF sun block - Swimwear (if appropriate) - Day sack (25 litre capacity) to comfortably carry the kit you'll take out on your days activity - Strong polythene bags to keep the contents of your daypack dry - Water bottle(s) - at least 1 litre capacity - Basic first aid kit (plasters, blister treatment, antiseptic etc) - Insect repellent - Waterproof bag or container and knife for your lunch - Walking/trekking poles (if applicable) Water-to-Go An alternative to bottled water from single-use sealed water bottles is filtered water from a refillable bottle containing its own water filter such as a Water-to-go bottle available from www.watertogo.eu. Just fill up from any water source and save the environment from disposable plastic bottles. We have negotiated an exclusive 15% discount with our partners Water-to-Go for you as a thank you for helping the environment. Please go to their website at www.watertogo.eu and enter the code RWH17 when ordering. In addition, Water-to-Go will match the discount with a donation to our charity, Heart & Sole, which will allow us to continue to make a difference in the countries you visit on our holidays. Trekking Poles Many of our clients find walking poles hugely beneficial when walking. They can both reduce stress on the knees and aid confidence. If you use them please make sure that you have the rubber tips covering the sharp metal points. There is increasing evidence that the bare metal tips are damaging footpaths both in the UK and abroad. Please take a few minutes to look at the current advice on your planned destination. Please be aware of what's going on around you, take sensible precautions with your credit cards and passport and avoid displays of wealth such as wearing expensive jewellery or watches. Do not carry more cash on you than you will need for each day, and we recommend that a money belt is used. Cultural Awareness Responsible Travel We're committed to ethical tourism in all our destinations. Our holidays are designed for you to discover the essence of the country you are visiting. Travelling in small groups not only gives you an up close and personal experience of your destination, but minimises your impact on the immediate environment. We feel that the most important starting point to protect the environment is to be out in it. For more details visit our website. Heart & Sole We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support. Tipping Tipping is at your discretion but is is expected in many resorts. We suggest you allow $1.50-$2.50 per day for chambermaids. As a general guide, restaurant tips are around 15-20% of the meal total. Please consider this when arranging your own dinners. Tipping Tipping is widespread, and expectations are fairly high. The drivers accompanying the tour on transfers and excursions tend to be mines of information relating to all aspects of local life and the country, and are also excellent travelling companions. Should you wish to tip our Canadian colleagues, you may wish to consider an allowance of C$3 per day for each of our drivers. In restaurants it is customary to add a 15% tip to the bill throughout North America. It must be stressed however that such tips are at your own discretion. Communication Mobile Phones Please do provide us with a mobile phone contact number. We will only use this to contact you with important information relating to your holiday arrangements. Please do keep your mobile phones switched on and readily available when travelling to the airport or if delayed in transit so that we can contact you with any last minute information relating to your travel arrangements. As a matter of courtesy, please switch off your mobile phone during walks, or endeavour to minimise its use. Please also try to minimise the use of mobile devices during group meals. Feedback We welcome all comments about our holidays and value ideas for the future. If you have provided us with an email address we will invite you to complete an online questionnaire or to add feedback to our page on independent review site 'Feefo'. Important Information Please note that this Holiday Information sheet may be periodically updated and reissued. In most cases the revisions will be minor and the overall nature of the holiday will remain unchanged.
