L O C A L E C I T Y G U I D E Q U E Z O N OUR ROOTS C I T Y V O L U M E QUEZON MEMORIAL CIRCLE 1 THE WORLD PEACE BELL A famous historical park in the nation s former capital, Quezon City Memorial Park is a national park and shrine bounded by the Elliptical Road and in the shape of an ellipse. The area which the park occupies was originally meant for the National Capitol to house the Congress of the Philippines, but its construction was interrupted at the beginning of the Second World War. After the war, then President Sergio Osmeṅa issued E.O. No.79 stipulating the creation of a Quezon Memorial Committee to raise funds by public subscription for the purpose of erecting a memorial to his predecessor, President Manuel L. Quezon. It was the art-deco themed design of Filipino architect Federico Ilustre that was chosen to be the blueprint of the project. The monument served as the centrepiece of the park and would house the remains of the late president. The construction of the memorial started in 1952, and was made of Carrara marble, consisting of three vertical pylons that represented Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Three mourning angels holding sampaguita wreaths, sculpted by the Italian sculptor Francesco Monti, were placed at its top. The 66-meter shrine, mirroring the age of President Quezon when he died, stood on a 36-hectare elliptical lot. It was completed in 1978 in time for Quezon s centennial birth. In the following year, his remains were reinterred in the memorial on the 19th of August. It was President Marcos, through a presidential decree, who mandated the site as a National Shrine. The NHI or the National Historical Institute, now the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, governs the monument while the Quezon City government oversees the park. The mortal remains of Mrs. Aurora Quezon, President Quezon s wife, were also interred in the memorial in 2005.
The Quezon City Memorial Circle is a familyfriendly spot. For park goers, the green open spaces of the Circle (the colloquial term for the Quezon City Memorial Circle), serves as the perfect location for picnics and some relaxation. For those into physical activities, the park has an amusement park that offers different attractions like slides, monkey bars, the seesaws, rides for both kids and adults, and many more. Of course, Circle is also widely known as a place for joggers and aerobics enthusiasts. Within the park you may also find museums, other monuments and markers, and gardens located within the property. There are also several dining stalls and outlets that cater to all park visitors. The Circle has slowly but surely become the melting point for citizens in QC with an active lifestyle, searching for a bit of sanctuary in one of the busiest cities in the country.
