An invitation to a premier conference of the education sector The Home Economics Institute of Australia (Queensland), (HEIA[Q]), invites you and your organisation to join us in supporting our annual conference to be held on Saturday 12 August 2017 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. About the institute As the peak professional body, the Home Economics Institute of Australia represents the interests of home economists working in education, industry, community services, consumer affairs, and family and household management. The Institute has a growing membership of approximately 1600, with memberships registered in every State and Territory. The Queensland Division has approximately 600 members, with the majority of members being home economics educators. About the HEIA(Q) 2017 conference Home Economics! Action! Futures! Home Economics! Action! Futures! is a theme that should resonate with all home economics professionals, whether they work in education or business, or remain engaged with but no longer as active in the profession. In 2017 it will be essential for the home economics profession to take strong and confident actions related to new junior and senior curricula to deliver rigorous and exciting s that encourage and enable young people to actively promote sustainable families, sustainable food futures and sustainable textiles futures. The conference will help home economics professionals in schools achieve this and inspire all home economics professionals to model actions that exemplify the home economics values of wellbeing, sustainability and equity. Delegates will explore contemporary curricula, pedagogy and personal actions to promote futures in which we will be proud to play our parts. The aim of the conference is to empower delegates and for them to empower others, in turn, to collaborate creatively and make real their visions of a better world in terms of families, food and textiles. Two nationally recognised keynote speakers, social commentator and author Jane Caro and researcher and food sensory scientist Dr Gie Liem will lead the charge towards the future. Engaging and informative local and interstate presenters will support our keynote speakers in 27 concurrent sessions that include topics such as sensory science, food science, food labelling, the fashion industry, maker spaces, fabric designing in the classroom, what s cooking, what s new from QCAA and ACARA, reflective, critical and creative thinking, what s new in sustainable textiles,... and much more! In summary, Home Economics! Action! Futures! will promote contemporary Home Economics, the actions by which futures-oriented home economics professionals can promote socially just and sustainable societies both locally and globally and how these actions will build great futures for individuals, families and communities. Who will attend? The conference will attract approximately 300 delegates, including: individuals and organisations with an interest in home economics, health education, technologies education, curriculum, learning and teaching, wellbeing, food and nutrition, and textiles and fashion teachers and other educators of home economics, health, food and nutrition, and textiles tertiary educators tertiary students.
