With the help of my husband, Ken, and the MGVs who could come, we were finished cleaning out two big beds by about 2:00p.m. I hadn t thought we d even finish in one day. Cathie Nelson s husband, Tom, transported three pickup loads of plants back to PdC for the plant sale. So if you weren t able to come, don t feel bad, it was a success. 2

A Note from Cheryl: My address and directions (GPS usually gets it wrong) Address and contact information: 60847 Wall Ridge Rd, Eastman, WI 608-874-9383 (phone) 262-745-4196 (text) DIRECTIONS: Coming from Prairie du Chien: Hwy 35 North to County Rd D - turn right. Turn at the next left onto Wall Ridge Road. In about 2.5 miles, look on the right for a pile of limestone blocks and a large iron wheel...turn right into the driveway. Coming from the north & east: Drive up / down Hwy 27 (which is closed from Eastman to PdC). Our road is 2 miles north of town. At Zabel s Equipment store, turn west onto Wall Ridge Road. In about 2.5 miles, look on the right for a pile of limestone blocks and a large iron wheel...turn right into the driveway. Parking: In front of the garage In front of the barn doors Along the driveway on the north side of the barn (by the propane tank) Along the driveway by the orchard Please leave a lane open along the barn and driveway for anyone who needs to leave early. And do not park on the south side of the barn...there are areas there with a steep drop. I will be serving refreshments: lemonade, water, fruit, cheese & crackers and cookies. 3

The St. Feriole Island Plant Sale on 5/12 was a success. We had fun and the customers were appreciative of our help picking out plants. Shown here are Carley Borcherding and Julie Hazen answering questions and helping a customer with her plant selections. 4

The first annual Crawford County Master Gardner s Fund Raiser was a huge success. We made $650. And now we just need to decide how do we want to use it? If you have some ideas on how we can spend the money contact Julie with your ideas. And a BIG thank you to everyone who helped. It is thanks to all of you that it was such a big success. 5

This is a little bit of a late notice but this tour is being offered by the Bluff County MGVs. You can get ongoing educational hours for the hike of the Bluff Prairie Restoration but not the self-guided tour of the studios and galleries. 6

Highlighting MG Volunteers for June 9 Donna Teynor: Donna has been a life long gardener. She doesn t remember when she was not gardening. And she comes from a long line of farmers / gardeners. Both sets of her great-grandparents were truck farmers. Donna s maternal great-grandfather had 15 acres of orchard, 2 acres of strawberries and 4 acres of vegetables that they hauled to PdC and sold or traded. He had 10 or so cabins that families from around the area lived in from spring until fall and helped with the planting, harvesting and canning of the produce from the farm. He had a huge summer kitchen where they processed the produce. The workers were paid with a share of the produce along with room and board. Her paternal grandparents worked for the canning factory in Cassville. Her grandmother used to tell her that she had gardening in her veins and if she were to cut herself she would bleed mud. She said that used to scare me a lot when I was little!. She had a big family with 9 siblings. They lived just south of Patch Grove, about 13 miles from PdC. With such a large family to feed, of course her parents had a large garden and a small orchard, too. Donna loved to work in the garden as a little girl and she still does. Donna has been an MGV since 1995 (she estimates, since she says it has been too long to remember). She has been a facilitator for Level 1 training since 2004. At that time anyone in Crawford County who wanted to take MG Level 1 training shared the training with Vernon and Richland Counties. When Donna asked Vance if he would host Crawford County MG training he said that he didn t have time. So Donna asked if she could be the facilitator for the classes and he stated that she could if she could find a partner. Donna asked Cathie Nelson, who agreed, and they held the first training class in Crawford County. Donna and Cathie shared the facilitator role for two years. Donna then did the training on her own for the next 5-6 years. When the training changed and was more hands-on work, she asked Julie Hazen, Sandy Vold and Mike Maddox to assist. Mike did the soils training class and, when he left, Donna asked Vance Haugen to take over. Vance did the class until he left last year at which time Dave Troester took it over. Julie and Sandy switch it up and do the classes that they most enjoy. Also, this year, Marla Cameron and Karyl Fritsche joined as facilitators. Donna maintains that she took the MG training for selfish reasons. She liked to garden and wanted to learn how to better share the knowledge with others. The MGV association was perfect for that. But we all know that Donna gives a lot of herself to help and benefit the community. So it isn t all selfishness. And she still likes being a teacher when it involves gardening. Which is what lead her to starting the Kids in the Garden program last year. It was a huge success and she says she is looking forward to this year s adventures with the kids.

A Note from Donna: If anyone wants to contribute a bag of Miracle Grow Potting Mix, I need about twenty 2-cubic-foot bags for the new bed in the Kids in the Garden. Donations would be greatly appreciated. It is tax deductible. ALSO: If anyone has been saving plant stems (for bug motels) and/or coneflower seed heads, please bring them to the June monthly meeting and I will take them. Plant some flowers for the birds and the bees. Crawford County s MG Association s Mission Statement: We TEACH, LEARN, LEAD and SERVE, connecting with the University of Wisconsin and engaging with them in transforming lives and communities. 10 "An EEO/AA employer, University of Wisconsin Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming, including Title IX and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements."
