The Abano s origins dates back to the prehistoric period: the archaeological
excavations led in Montegrotto, in locality Saint Pietro Montagnon, demonstrate that the area was inhabited by populations that knew the curative property of the thermal waters and mud yet. The Imperial Age was a period of splendour, when splendid mosaic villas were built. Later on, in the centuries of Christianity s diffusion, connection between curative virtue of the waters and refined life caused the decline of the city. During the 12 th century we find in the documents news of the city, given, together at eight castles, by the Imperator Ottone II to Ingelfredo de Conti. When he died Abano passed to Manfredo, who left his daughter Cecilia as heir: many nobles found to conquer her hand and lay hold of Abano, stirring up battles that ended when the Padova s Republic imposed its predominance. Padova ordered the reopening of Thermal Baths and to promulgate statutes to discipline the use: the frequency was limited until 1554, when three doctors were appointed to direct the Thermal Bath. A second golden period was the second half of the 18 th centuries, with the building of numerous villas transformed, then, in SPA: to stay in Abano became in fashion for the high society. The world wars didn t spare it: in 1943 hotels were requisitioned and designated to host the German Air Force; next year Abano hosted International Red Cross and finally its structures became barracks for the allied troops. Today in Abano, Astoria and Verdi Hotels offer the necessary structures for cures and an ideal environment for a total relax.
