For this reason, it is often called the Eternal city. In the past, Rome was the capital of one of the most important empires in the world, the Roman Empire. There are very important monuments to visit in Rome like the Coliseum. The Coliseum is an amphitheatre in the middle of Rome. It is 189 metres long and 156 metres wide. At the beginning, there were famous gladiator fights in the arena. It had a capacity for 50.000 people. Now, the Roman Coliseum is one of the most popular tourist attractions. The Vatican city is the smallest state in the world. It is located in the city of Rome. Popes live in the Vatican. The Sistine Chapel and St. Peter s Cathedral are in the Vatican. Rome is great! 2
