Location Elounda is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the north coast of Greece, in the prefecture of Lassithi, and lies between Agios Nikolaos and the seaside resort of Plaka. Once a fishing and farming village, the fortunes of Elounda grew when a fine emery stone or whetstone was discovered and mined from local rock, which along with the development of large salt pans during the Venetian period ensured prosperous trade within Europe. The town itself lies close to a narrow spit of land which joins the mainland with the Kolokytha Peninsula. On the north side of this spit is the large lagoon of Elounda, once protected by the ancient fortified island of Spinalonga, and to the south the magnificent bay of Mirabello. Spinalonga Island, with its ruined fortress, was once a leper colony and became the setting for Victoria Hislop s bestselling novel The Island. On all sides one is surrounded by spectacular coastline, shaded beaches, glowing sapphire seas and points of archaeological interest.
