LIMA PRE-EXTENSION Red howler monkey Day 1 Wednesday ARRIVE LIMA Arrive in Lima, Peru, where you are met and transferred to the Swissotel. Day 2 Thursday COLONIAL LIMA Tour historic Lima, visiting Casa Aliaga, a private home dating back to the Conquistadors. See the Cathedral, where Francisco Pizarro is entombed, and Plaza de Armas. Before lunch, tour the monastery and vast catacombs of the Iglesia de San Francisco. (B,L) Day 3 Friday LIMA Begin your morning by browsing the vibrant Indian Market. Enjoy a guided tour of the Larco Herrera Museum, housed in an 18th century vice-royal mansion built over a 7th century pre-columbian pyramid and surrounded by beautiful gardens. The museum was founded in 1926 and has the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru. The galleries provide an overview of 3000 years of development of Peruvian pre-columbian history. Dinner tonight is at the museum. (B,L,D) RAINFOREST & CANOPY LODGE PRE-EXTENSION Day 1 Wednesday ARRIVE LIMA Fly independently to Lima, Peru and overnight at the Costa del Sol. Day 2 Thursday LIMA / IQUITOS / CEIBA TOPS After flying to Iquitos, take a speedboat ride to Ceiba Tops. Settle into our rooms before boarding the boat for the short ride to Yanamono Clinic. This clinic was founded by Wisconsin graduate Dr. Linnea Smith. Return to Ceiba Tops and learn more about the clinic and its work. (B,L,D) Day 3 Friday CANOPY WALKWAY Enjoy an early morning boat ride to the Napo River and the Canopy Walkway. Our visit to the Walkway is certainly one of the highlights of the journey. Ascend the Walkway to a height of over 10 stories, emerging above the top of the seemingly endless canopy and experience a sight few have ever witnessed! Enjoy a close-up view of life in the canopy: plants and bright flowers attracting gorgeous birds and other creatures. After lunch at the lodge, visit the ReNuPeRu Ethnobotanical Garden, where plants are grown for use in local medicine and healing ceremonies. Return in the afternoon to Ceiba Tops. (B,L,D) Day 4 Saturday CEIBA TOPS / IQUITOS / EMBARK Awake to the sounds of the forest, joining your naturalist for an early morning bird walk. Transfer by boat to Iquitos. Head out onto the Amazon River to Monkey Island. Monkey Island is a private reserve whose free-roaming inhabitants include wooly, saki and titi monkeys as well as tamarins and marmosets. After lunch, meet your fellow passengers and embark. (B,L,D) Canopy Walkway AMAZON VOYAGE ITINERARY Day 1 Friday ARRIVE LIMA Fly independently to Lima, and overnight a Lima hotel. Day 2 Saturday LIMA / IQUITOS / EMBARK Fly over the Andes to Iquitos, where we enjoy an encounter at the Manatee Research Center. See how manatees are cared for and prepared for reintroduction into their native habitat. Board the riverboat, home for seven days. Enjoy stargazing and storytelling with your local guides while cruising slowly on the Amazon River toward the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali Rivers. (B,L,D) Days 3-8 Sunday-Friday AMAZON RIVER & TRIBUTARIES Spend the next six nights aboard a plush riverboat navigating deep into the tributaries of the Amazon a web of forests and lakes that pulsates with a chorus of birdlife, far-off calls of primates and flashes of butterflies. More than 1,300 species of birds, 40,000 plant species and grey and pink river dolphins can be found in the lush, ever-changing jungle we know simply as The Amazon. Enjoy unprecedented access to three habitats, varzea, igapó and palm-flooded forest, including the deep reaches of the protected Pacaya-Samiria Reserve, for the greatest diversity of wildlife sightings. Nighttime excursions may reveal caimans, capybaras, common potoos, frogs and other nocturnal wildlife. Periodically throughout the year, guests may even release turtle hatchlings. IE s daily excursions include early morning birding, enriching presentations, school visits in local villages and even piranha fishing! Learn about the lives of the Ribereño people as we visit villages perched along the riverbanks. This is a fantastic opportunity to stroll through their gardens learning about medicinal plants from a local Shaman. Depending on the villages visited during your voyage, you may also see an IE-funded water treatment tower or home filtration systems. (B,L,D Daily) Day 9 Saturday IQUITOS / LIMA / DEPART On an early morning excursion to Pilpintuwasi Rescue Center, see two- and three-toed sloth, red uakari and even a jaguar which have been rescued. Upon arrival back in Lima late this afternoon, dayrooms are provided until time to connect with independent overnight flights home. (B,L) Day 10 Sunday ARRIVE HOME Arrive back in your home country. Machu Picchu MACHU PICCHU & CUSCO POST-EXTENSION Day 9 Saturday IQUITOS / LIMA Fly from Iquitos to Lima and overnight at the Costa de Sol. (B,L) Day 10 Sunday LIMA / CUSCO / URUBAMBA VALLEY Fly to Cusco the heart of the Inca Empire. Drive into the historic Urubamba Valley, stopping in Chinchero to browse Andean handicrafts. Visit the Urubamba Market and spend tonight at the Aranwa Hotel. (B,L,D) Days 11 & 12 Monday & Tuesday MACHU PICCHU Board the train to Machu Picchu, where we spend the afternoon exploring the ruins. A full day is available to return to Machu Picchu or explore our hotel s extensive orchid gardens. Spend the next two nights at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel. (B,L,D Daily) Day 13 Wednesday OLLANTAYTAMBO / SACSAYHUAMÁN / CUSCO Catch the morning train back to the Sacred Valley. Explore the mighty archaeological wonder of Ollantaytambo, where ancient temples and fortresses were built to protect the Sacred Valley. After a Paso Fino horse show at Wayra Ranch, continue to Cusco. We stop at Sacsayhuamán a huge fortress of massive stones which zigzags across the side of the mountain. Spend two nights at the Aranwa Hotel. (B,L,D) Day 14 Thursday CUSCO Stroll the streets of Cusco, exploring the Koricancha also known as Santo Domingo, Santa Catalina Convent and the Cathedral. The afternoon is free to explore on your own before a farewell dinner featuring Andean fare. (B,L,D) Day 15 Friday CUSCO / LIMA / EN ROUTE Fly back across the Andes to Lima, and transfer to the airport this evening for flights home.
