National Jamboree Dates: Wednesday, July 19 through Friday, July 28, 2017 Departure Date: Tuesday July 18, 2017 (Afternoon/Evening) Return Date: Saturday July 29 (Evening/Night) Transportation: Charter Bus 2017 National Scout Jamboree Live Scouting s Adventure Blackhawk Area Council Contingent Information 10/02/2016 Location: The Summit Bechtel Scout Reservation, Mt. Hope, West Virginia Cost: The BAC Jamboree Committee set the fee for Jamboree 2017 at $1,695. Utilizing extensive budgeting and planning, our goal was to minimize the expense for this two week high-adventure trip. Unforeseen circumstances such as increased gasoline prices could slightly effect our budgeting. Any fee adjustment will be relayed immediately and after April 1, 2017 the fee will be final. Payment due dates: $100 at time of registration $350 by April 29, 2016 (if missed, try and catch up as best possible) $350 by August 12, 2016 (if missed, try and catch up as best possible) $350 by November 4, 2016 $350 by January 13, 2017 Remaining balance April 30, 2017 (Suggestion: budget $100 per month from this point going forward so the balance due April 30 th will be significantly lower.) Refund policy: The deposit of $100 is non-refundable. Fee refund requests for the rest of the balance paid will be presented to the Jamboree Committee. These requests will be considered, but not guaranteed reimbursable due to expenses being incurred by the Blackhawk Area Council in preparation for Jamboree 2017. Tentative Training and Parent Information Dates February 11, 2017 MANDITORY Parent s Meeting, Orientation and Team Training Day Maud E Johnson Elementary School 3805 Rural St, Rockford, IL 61107 1:30pm to 3:30pm Scouts in Full Field Uniform [Field Uniform, BSA pants, BSA socks & BSA belt - ALL REQUIRED!] April 21-23, 2017 US Grant Pilgrimage Galena, IL May 2017 - Final Parent Meeting and Final Scout Preparations June 2017 Final Shakedown Campout The training days and the campouts are intended to help the Scouts to get to know one another, build cooperation and unity among the patrols and troops, learn how the troop will operate, and practice food preparation for the jamboree. Participant Photos All participants must have a current photo uploaded to their Summit account. Jamboree credentials will be photo ID s. The photo must be similar in nature to a passport photo or driver s license meaning a clear, straight-on head shot against a light colored solid background with only the applicant visible in the photo. These photos should NOT be cropped, candid family photos showing the participant. Photos (or updating photos) are due by March 31, 2017. Uniform Each participant will need at least TWO complete uniforms of the program they are registered in. Boy Scout Tan uniform shirt, green BSA pants, belt and BSA socks Venturing Green uniform shirt, gray Venture pants, belt and BSA Venturing socks Participants will be provided with 2 sets of uniform patches council shoulder patch, troop number, patrol patch. If you will be taking more than two uniforms, extra patches can be purchased. These uniforms must have their Jamboree unit numbers and current patches sewn (or magic badge) on. Full uniform will be required by the Galena Campout. Jamboree Scholarships The council Jamboree contingent will have opportunities for participants to raise money to help them with Jamboree expenses. A good example is: Popcorn sale you can earn up to 35% of your total sales. Let your Jamboree leader know you want to participate. Money can be used for fees, extra patches, uniforms, spending money at the jamboree. Physical Fitness Be Prepared! The jamboree is a physically demanding experience. West Virginia is called the Mountain State for a reason. The jamboree is on foot, with all participants walking/hiking everywhere. There will be no bus service or personal vehicles used. While much of the site is level, there are regular changes in grade as part of everyone s daily schedule. A number of the activities require more stamina and fitness climbing, rappelling, rafting, mountain biking, and skateboarding.

Medical Examination All participants must submit certification of physical fitness on the official Jamboree Medical Form no later than April 1 st 2017. This form, along with proof of insurance must be uploaded to the participants Jamboree dashboard online. The bar coded Annual Health and Medical Record form is available in the participant s Jamboree registration dashboard at the top of the page. While Google Chrome works the best, this online system supports Internet Explorer version 9 or later, or Firefox version 14 or later (it may be necessary to upgrade the browser if an older version is currently used). A user s guide for the online medical form can be found there for those needing assistance in completing their medical information. Part A, Part B and Part C of the Annual Health and Medical Record form must be completed. We will also need a hard copy of the health form for our April camping trip. Please bring a copy to the parents meeting in February, or bring a copy to the campout weekend in April. Maintenance of good health in a Jamboree camp is of utmost importance, and it is with this objective in mind that the following must be enforced: 1. Participants will be expected to get a complete examination by a licensed health-care practitioner. 2. Medical forms need to be submitted to the National Jamboree by April 15, 2017. 3. Participants will go through a medical screening prior to arrival. It is imperative that the medical form is submitted by the deadline so that prior approval for participation is given. In the event a participant is found medically unfit upon arrival at the Summit, he or she cannot participate in the jamboree and must return home at his or her expense. Immunizations: Immunization requirements are based on recommendations of the U.S. Public Health Service. All participants must provide proof of immunization for tetanus within 10 years (since June, 2007). In addition, youth participants must provide verification of the following immunizations since birth: (1) measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR); (2) polio vaccine (oral or injection); (3) diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (DPT); and chicken pox (Varicella). It is recommended, but not required, that immunizations for hepatitis B be considered. Exceptions to Immunization on Medical or Religious Grounds: If there is a medical or religious reason why you cannot comply with vaccination requirements, obtain a statement to that effect from a physician if it is an exemption on medical grounds. If you aren t immunized due to religious reasons, you must provide a statement to that effect that includes specific reasons so it can be given full consideration by the jamboree medical staff. These statements need to be submitted with the medical form. Body Mass Index: BMI is one of the factors for participation in the jamboree. A simple online calculator to determine your BMI can be found on the Centers for Disease Control website at www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/. The jamboree will accept applicants who are recommended for participation by a health care practitioner and who have a BMI of 31.9 or less.

The jamboree will consider for participation applicants with a BMI of 32.0 to 39.9 and/or one of the following: Hypertension Prior stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) Diabetes mellitus Coronary artery surgery Tobacco use Family history of premature (before age 55) Dyslipidemia coronary artery disease Prior Heart Attack Sleep apnea requiring CPAP or BiPAP Coronary angioplasty/stent COPD Applicants may be requested to provide further documentation, including cardiac testing, pulmonary testing, or further information from their physician to ensure the applicant s ability to participate. The BSA cannot accept any applicant with a BMI of 40.0 or higher. Phone Service There will be multiple cell phone towers. Cell phone charging stations will be available in every subcamp. Equipment storage will be available at activity areas to secure phones and equipment. Campwide Wi-Fi will be available. Packing for the Jamboree Everything a participant brings to the Jamboree must fit inside the PROVIDED duffel bag and backpack. Large Duffle Bag Backpack Day Pack Due to limits on space during our travels, no additional baggage is allowed. Activity Schedules The activities at the Jamboree will run on most days from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. This will leave more than enough time to check everything out. Also the Summit Center will stay open for Scouts each night after all of the visitors have left. Type of Activities Elective Program Activities The participant simply shows up at the program venue, gets in line, waits for some period of time and does the activity. The actual time spent doing the activity is relatively short sometimes only a few minutes, perhaps 15 or 20 minutes on some activities. When complete, the participant either gets back in line for another turn or goes on to a different activity. There will be many different Elective Activities in the various program venues. Participants will have plenty of unscheduled time ( free time ) to visit the various program areas and do the Elective Activities which interest them. Zip Line and Canopy Tours Because of limited capacity on these activities, these events are pre-scheduled only. Details will be sent out to the unit leaders in early 2017.

Offsite Optional Activity There is one offsite activity available in 2017 Whitewater Rafting on the New River. There is an additional charge of $65 and the participant must meet all qualifications set by the professional outfitters. Important Note: Registering for Whitewater Rafting is done at the Unit level. Details will be sent to unit leaders in November 2016. All members wishing to participate in a particular unit will be assigned to the same time slot, ensuring it won t conflict with their Jamboree Trek or Day of Service assignments. Your daily schedule will be emailed to you. Print a copy and bring it with you. A printed copy will not be provided at the Jamboree. Community Service - 40,000 Scouts, 5 days, and 300,000 hours of community service! As part of the scheduled activities, Scouts will travel off site for a Day of Service. On this day, Scouts will be transported to 1 of 9 counties surrounding the Summit to help with a service project that will benefit the public. The Day of Service will last from the morning until 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. On the Day of Service, Scouts should wear jeans, t-shirt, and sturdy, closed toe shoes. Can People Visit the National Jamboree? The jamboree will be open to visitors every day, beginning Wednesday, July 19 th, and continuing through Tuesday, July 25 th. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except on Saturday, July 29 th, when visitor hours are 12 p.m. until the close of the stadium show and Sunday, July 23 rd, when visitor hours will be 12p.m. to 8 p.m. On entering the Jamboree site, visitors will be directed to the public reception location, the Summit Center. This is where visitors and participants can come together. In the Summit Center, visitors will be offered a jamboree lite experience with a sampling of jamboree activities, constant entertainment, and activities in the arena area, in addition to the exhibit and display areas. Access to program areas and living areas will be limited to jamboree participants. A nominal fee will be charged. Visitors are encouraged to register at www.bsajamboree.org. prior to arriving at the Summit. Trading Post There will be trading posts operating in convenient locations throughout the jamboree. The following services and types of items will be available in each trading post. Jamboree souvenirs Sundries Snacks: soft drinks, candy, milk, and light meals Payment is by cash, Visa, Master Card, and Discover. ATMs will be available for participants wanting to use cash.
